How To Make the Razor E300 Faster With Parts From eBay - Scooter Episode 7

Ғылым және технология

You asked for it, you got it - MORE SCOOTER PROJECT. The parts you need are in the description!
Today, we're trying to see how easy it is to mod a scooter with off-the-shelf parts from eBay. As always, nothing quite goes to plan. We have fun though ;)
More development in this area to come - stay tuned! I'm thinking brakes, you know?
Parts List:
Razor E300 - ebay.to/2nklaOO
MY1020 Motor w/ESC - ebay.us/8iXomZ
Batteries - ebay.us/9FJOyz
BMS - ebay.us/ruUtdx
Note that it doesn't always come with the fancier throttle I got with my kit. Sometimes they ship it without the keyswitch throttle. Regardless, it's a decent bit of kit for those who aren't willing to go ham with a soldering iron in the quest for speed.

    Nice thanks for the video. I got a razor e300s in December 2016 but only just started properly using it alot in 2017 so really I want to get alot of use into the batterys and motor before I do any upgrades because so far I've used it load but only thing that's worn down is the tires so ill probably get some new tires and then keep racking up the miles and once my motor and batterys start to show signs of use I plan to just upgraded from the 2 stock 12v 7ah batteries to 2 12v 9ah or 10ah whichever fits the best and then if that goes well I then plan on going to 36 v so it would be 3x, 12v 9ah (or 10 can't remember which one is the right dimensions for the scooter) and ill have to mount on of the batterys outside then if that goes well the next step would be a motor and controller upgrade and then I don't know what I'd do after that. Really the upgrade i want the most is variable speed controller but can't find anywhere in the uk that sells them and to have once from America it's like 50 pound and about 3 weeks to ship.

    Hi this is great work! Im currently working on my razor mx 400 and I hooked up a 20v lithium weed eater battery to test and see if low batteries was the issue, well after about five seconds of being plugged in the large capacitor on the board exploded and I shit myself xD any clue why? Also it still worked afterwards once I installed my brand new stock battery replacement, hit the throttle to test worked great put her together turned on the swith hit the throttle and now nothing cant figure it out, is that capacitor a must? If so do you happen to know which to order? Its in to many pieces to read anything, or would it be better off to order a new controller? Thanks for any info.

    Hey bud, I know this video is like 2 months old, but do you think a cvt transmission might get you a higher top speed? It's something I've been thinking about trying on my E300.

  • @WhatUpTKHere

    @WhatUpTKHere

    6 жыл бұрын

    Robert Linderman a CVT wouldn't get a higher top speed - we're currently held up by the current limit, not the gearing. And anyway, a CVT is less efficient than a straight chain drive. You'd be best just optimising the single gear ratio rather than installing any kind of variable transmission.

  • @WhatUpTKHere

    @WhatUpTKHere

    6 жыл бұрын

    Robert Linderman like, if you had a taller geared CVT than my chain setup, you might go faster, but an optimised chain drive would almost always waste less power than a CVT.

  • @WhatUpTKHere

    @WhatUpTKHere

    3 жыл бұрын

    You won’t get 35 miles an hour without burning out the stock motor. Do gearing calculations like I did in the previous episodes to figure out what motor RPM you need to reach 35 mph. Then, spec a motor with plenty of power - probably 1000 - 1500W minimum to go that fast. Battery wise, get a quality ebike pack, around 48V or 60V. Helmet, too. Quite dangerous.

Definitely agree with it not being a huge performance increase, but the variable throttle is definitely worth the investment. I'll be looking at LiFePo batteries for mine eventually, but my current plans for modifications are on hold while I work on decking out my own welding and fabrication workshop in Campbellfield VIC. Do you guys think that the 36v conversion kit will burn out the 24v stock motor? Also, if I want the scooter to be able to go up decently steep hills, will it be good enough? Basically, I am looking to take the razor e300 and upgrade it with ebay parts. I am willing to upgrade the motor, voltage, and throttle, but I am not sure what all needs to be upgraded/should be upgraded. Also, I was thinking of replacing the lead acid batteries with 18650 cells, do you think that they will be able to supply enough amperage? Any general upgrade advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • @WhatUpTKHere

    It'd be a hell of a lot better up hills, for sure. Discharge of various 18650 cells varies a lot but I've seen them used in some e-bike packs so it's probably doable if you build the pack correctly. It's possible to burn out the stock motor when running at 36V, I did it in a previous episode. Quite frustrating! :P

  • @WhatUpTKHere

    Not sure what you're trying to do there, but it sounds like it wouldn't be particularly good from a thermodynamic perspective. If you're trying to generate electricity from the front wheel, and use that to run the rear wheel, that's not gonna go well. It'll take more energy to turn the front wheel then you'll get out of the generator to propel the rear wheel.

    TK the magneto creates enough to have 2-12v lights on, while charging. the idea is to use it to charge while moving extending the rid time. or, have the magneto run directly meaning minimal battery usage.

    I got a couple of E100 for $5 .lol the batteries and stock esc were dead...mess with it. for some reason one of motors is FASTER...it might be 150 watt.(after market) Same case size..with different turns probably...idk, it's faster .lol but I modify the kiddies powerwheels to run on 5s lipo.lmao I just took the throttle switch off a powerwheels.. it's not variable...but it's spring loaded to return to zero...or thumb release. It's basically a straight shot. no electronics on 8s @ 50C...32v lipo.lol It ran fine,..but I dont think it's too healthy on the motor. I might be doing 16-18 mph. it'll kick out from under you ..if you not careful..but when you're on it...it's fine. I drove it a couple miles on 7s to test it. The motor gets hot..but the batteries were cool.

    My attempts to modify the eBay controller for more speed were a failure; I got the scooter up and running again with another kit, with similar performance. I'm looking at doing a video on another scooter I built as a much younger man, and then starting on a yet more interesting electric vehicle build. Only things holding me up are money and time!

    Question to both of you- right now my setup is a 36v (or 42v charged) lithium pack *without* a controller to a e300 with a replaced 36v 350watt motor. Instead of a throttle, I have a soldered DC power switch to allow power from batteries to motor. Have done this safely so far for a bit over a month. Ultimate question: does the controller offer any benefit at this point other than ability to add a classic throttle?

  • @WhatUpTKHere

    @WhatUpTKHere

    6 жыл бұрын

    When you're using a basic switch with a big DC motor like that, you can get arcing on the contacts which degrades them fairly quickly and, in a worst case scenario, can lead to them welding together. That's generally why we use controllers. You can get switches that can take that kind of punishment but they're pretty hefty and not easy to fix to a handlebar. All that aside, if it's working for you, do it. It just might require replacement every so often as the contacts arc up. I imagine you get quite a kick when you hit the switch and dump full battery voltage straight to the motor!

  • @WhatUpTKHere

    While the basic concept is true, that's not the problem here. The same wiring on the previous setup was capable of much greater performance. The controller has an in-built current limit which needs to be disabled to enable the scooter to run faster.
