I couldnt make this drink for the longest time, since i couldnt get Martinique rum. Finally got some, and i love the drink. And the rum. I lean more toward the more pungent, flavorful rums, like Martinique and the really funky Jamaicans and demerara rums.

Some additional info on the Last Rites .... In the 1950s, The Mai-Kai and other Tiki bars likely did not use agricole rhum. Old recipes that called for "Martinique rum" likely used a molasses-based rum, which was predominant before sugarcane -based rhum gained popularity in later decades. The Mai-Kai used Rhum Negrita, a French rum brand that dates back back to the mid-1800s, according to recently revealed records. If you're trying to make an authentic Last Rites from the 1950s, you might want to try Denizen's Merchant Reserve, a blend of pot-stilled Jamaican rum and a rare molasses-based rum from Martinique. The last time the Last Rites was featured during a full service as a "lost cocktail," it was interesting that they used Cruzan Blackstrap. Was it an attempt to duplicate the original flavor? Really makes me wonder how dark and molasses-forward the old Negrita rum really was.

Just made this tonight with Appleton 12 and it was really bitter. I’ll have to try it with the blackstrap. It may sound a bit basic but it is one of my faves. Cool video and I dig all of the special touches you do to time warp us back to how it was done originally.

How does this compare to the Last Rites at the Last Rites bar in SF? I have been wanting to try to make their version but the salted molasses makes me nervous

It's called a Service Bar when the drinks are made in a spot that no customers can see or sit at...
