In the glass that it was served in! [Trader Vic's La Florida Daiquiri]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Trader Vic's La Florida Daiquiri was served in an incredible stem glass.
...Another cocktail that I wanted to make just because of the glassware that it was served in... but it kinda turned into a history lesson, and the exploration of a legendary bar in Havana! Enjoy.
You'll need:
--------------------------------------
• One fresh lime
• Light Puerto Rican rum
• Maraschino liqueur
• White granulated sugar
--------------------------------------
- The quantities for the recipe are in the video -

Love the Morgantown tiki glass! We just found a few but in the non-optic style c. 1958. Excellent video!

Great episode again Spike. BTW, thanks for the tip on the space age ice bucket, I scored one too! Also, I was on a Zoom with Eve Bergeron (TV Grandaughter) and Beach Bum Berry several months ago, she said that Vic worked with Sunkist to develop a hand squeezer later, of a specific type that pinched the outside of the lime (like your hands) vs the modern squeezer. According to Eve they still use them, and the purpose of course was to gain the oils. Ebay vintage lime or citrus juicer. Works almost like pair of scissors. with jaws.

There was a La Floridita in downtown Miami years ago. You accessed the restaurant by taking stairs below street level. It was an oasis and of corse the daiquiri was exceptional

I enjoy the cocktail videos. This was especially fun because I was at La Floridita in Havana 2 years ago this week! Didnt get a drink there, it was very crowded. Lots of great drinks to be had though. Mojitos are a specialty at many refreshment stops. I spent a few days in Cuba just because I have always been fascinated with the history and culture.

Great video Spike! According to Beachbum Berry’s “Potions of the Caribbean,” you made La Florida Daquiri #4. He also said by the late 1940s, Constantino used crushed ice in the blender to get the frappéd consistency. Cheers!

Si, in the archive photo Spike put in this video you can see that Connie was using a blender, with a heavy ribbed glass blender jar with no handle.

Really great video, Spike! I can't wait to try this one. That is my favorite tiki glass. I wish someone would more accurately recreate those. Really awesome shirt, too!

I agree!! They're such incredible glasses. So delicate, I don't know how any of them survived the years...

If you pause at the 7:33 mark, you'll see all of the lime oils being squeezed out into the atmosphere, and not into the juice. Vic wasn't imagining it.

What if you took a peel from the lime and added it to the shaker when you use machine-squeezed lime juice?

Catching up on older videos. I wonder if the flavor of the Daiquiri with the hand-squeezed limes was also sub-consciously improved by being in the original glass?

Getting better every shoot! Thanks for getting the rope out of your hat (the older videos). When adding these fascinating archival photos to the show let me suggest you give them more screen time. In this show you flash & cut away from them so quickly there really isn't any chance to actually look at them. They add some historic depth to your commentary, so why not linger or even comment on them? Cheers!
