    In before the "vegan hate". We're big advocates of that fact that we eat vegan food all the time and don't even realize it! Vegetables, salads, plants and nuts are all vegan, so remember if you're a true food connoisseur - don't judge a meal by its title alone! We could've omitted the words "raw" and "vegan" entirely and no one might have known! :)

    It's more the concept and the stigma attached with the title of a vegan as such and despite me personally not liking this episode as much, I can see the appeal of it have a vegan family member

    I think you mean vegetarian as vegan is nearly impossible. A true vegan will not only shun meat but anything created using any animal product or byproduct. Nearly everything made has some sort of animal byproduct in it or used to make it. Even if it doesn't there was likely manure used to grow your vegetables and that was taken from an animal.

    ***** Chickens lay the eggs and we take the eggs that wont hatch. Not eating it is being wasteful. Also If you get eggs locally I feel that they probably treat the chickens nice. I don't understand how you could say chickens aren't treated nicely for the eggs. It's not like we go shoven are hands up their Uknowwhats and yanken an egg out. ... eww gross...

    You know, you were closer to a Lembas Bread the first time around if you left out the bacon. Replace the maple syrup with honey. Then reduce the water and increase the honey, better taste. Also make the base corn flour and you'd be closer to the books. I'd use a protein powder to increase the heft, it comes in vegan varieties. Oh, and grind any seeds used to create a smoother texture. You can also use a better seed combo. Come on guys try one more time. You can do better. Third time's the charm.

    +Selene Herrod That's what I was thinking. The representations in the movies, as far as I've read on Lembas bread from Tolkien's descriptions, are entirely accurate as far as looks go. This version is far too grainy and seedy looking. Lembas isn't supposed to look like it's made from dirt. :\

  • @chloe1-2-3-4-5

    @chloe1-2-3-4-5

    +Selene Herrod I agree, but I think the recipe aimed to stay true to the actual purpose of lembas bread - to be fill you up and give you lots of energy :) ("A SMALL BITE CAN FILL A GROWN MAN")

  • @TheMimiSard

    @TheMimiSard

    +lucielm I would like to point out something - I once did a bit of looking into the meaning of the word "corn" after I first read the details about lembas production, and it struck me that Tolkien was using an older meaning of the word than modern times does. In modern times the word has become associated with maize, the American vegetable, but the term "corn" was once a general synonym for "grain" or "seed". For instance, "peppercorn", or "corned beef", where it refers to the salt used to cure the meat. So the "corn" used to make lembas is never defined in Tolkien's writing and therefore be anything. I did find a recipe once that basically made a kind of shortbread, which I think is true to the books as I faintly recall the books saying that it tasted sweet.

  • @lucielm

    @lucielm

    8 жыл бұрын

    Mimi Sardinia That makes sense and we're missing a huge componant in that we don't know what the "corn" means. I assumed it's something like maize which would give it that sweet flavor and if ground really fine it could be molded like a corn tortillia. Those last a good while irl if prepared right.

    ***** This Lembas Bread seems more like dwarf bread since its made to be more of a granola bar than actual bread. Lembas Bread is described as being a light brown bread with a creamy white center. Simply take the bacon out of the recipe and the 1st recipe is more similar to how Tolkien described it. Not sure what Discworld bread is since I never read that series, sorry.

    I actually think I understand the secret behind the properties of the bread, having watched an episode of Sanctuary that made things a lot more clear. The secret behind the restorative properties of the bread lays in it's yeast. The elves, long lived as they are, have the time to cultivate and store the yeast in a highly specific way. Until the bread itself if baked, the yeast is stored under artificial lighting, only, for generations, never being exposed to true sunlight. This causes it to begin producing megadoses of Vitamin D, which causes the surge of energy in those who eat it.

    the fun part about recipes like this is you can customize it any way you want. and a quick question since some veggies have to be cooked to have their vitamins and minerals to be fully triggered how does this work in raw vegan? does the dehydrator solve this? and I am a omnivore but if it looks good I'll eat it. I even made my own chocolate lembas bread filled with nuts, seeds, dried fruit, chocolate chips, oatmeal, and protien powder.

They call it "The Garbage" Sorry, couldn't resist! Tried this recipe and it's actually very nice, PACKED with energy too, not quite up to the standards of real Lembas Bread, but better than the bacon laced monster they made last time :D.

  • @edi9892
    @edi98924 жыл бұрын

    I honestly imagined the Lembas like a Naan. Something like a thin bread with a lot of additives, like various nuts, raisins, etc. Such a bread already contains by default a lot of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Oddly, enough coating it in Gee (butter extract) seems to increase the shelf-life. What you did reminds me more of an energy bar, but then I lack whey and do some grinding/mixing. Chocolate might also increase the shelf-life under certain conditions (when stored cool, it can prevent it from soaking up moisture). When it comes to really long-lasting marching provision, look up Hyorogan.

    Lembas bread is supposed to be magical cornbread. For this recipe, I would at least ground the seeds and the flours so that you get a smooth mixture. Add some cornflour and some leavening agent and make a regular cornbread but infused with more nutrition.

    Why not diced dried apricots with a little bit of agave syrup (or honey, if not vegan) to bind it, instead of jam?

    ***** like sarcasm, jokes are kinda hard to catch on written form, moreso if some people tend to visit a lot of places where pun is the prefered humor, places wheresocial justice bloggers are at every corner and tend to take a joke as insult and one must stay at the defensive. *coughTumblrcough*. Sorry dude

    Vegan or not seems like a good idea for a camping or hiking food. If it does keep for several days the protein and carb fix would be perfect while out on the trail and you need that quick pick me up meal.

    This doesn't look ANYTHING like lembas bread. To get something close to the description of lembas bread, you need an ingredient that becomes highly filling for the amount ingested (Perhaps swells in water, or reacts chemically with acid in a harmless way, if such a thing even exists)

    Very nicely done but sadly I prefer accuracy about practicality. Lembas was made from corn or the meal of corn (it's a special type of corn but still corn is corn) and the leaves used were Mallorn leaves and the closest thing to it would be birch trees. Still its a pretty nice version of it.

    Wow, now I'm a vegetarian (previously vegan so before anyone says I'm biased against this type of food I'm clearly not) sorry, but this looks and I suspect, tastes nothing like Lembas bread is supposed to, with the word bread being in the title I would have thought that would have told them what they should be aiming for when re-creating this in the real world. I also highly doubt that elves would have had a dehydrater (I know she said you could just bake it but shh I was just trying to make a point :P) I think Lembas bread was probably some sort of unleavened bread or at least that would be the closest thing we would be able to make.
