Good tutorial. I've never heard it called a fillet before! I know it as a flange and also use it for a binding too. Looking forward to seeing the binding tutorial.

I suppose too that you could sew/serge together the fillet and the border, and then apply to the quilt (covering seam allowance)

@sewing studio When quilting a quilt that has a fillet and border, can the quilting be continuous over the whole quilt, border and fillet? Or does that spoil the 3 dimensional nature of the fillet? Thanks for this really helpful tutorial! Xx

Hello, Personally we wouldn't recommend quilting over the fillet.

I’m hoping someone can help me as I haven’t been able to find an answer online yet. If I have a fillet/flange on my quilt, is there a “best way” to quilt with one of those? Do you tip up the fillet/flange and start your quilting just under it to hide your starting point? I’m just doing straight machine quilting for my first quilt. Thanks for any suggestions!!

Your instincts are good in tipping it up to hide your starting point. You would treat the interior to the fillet and the exterior to the fillet as separate quilting areas (at least that is how I do it!)

But it’s no different than adding a skinny border?

  • @SewingStudio

Hello G C! A skinny border would typically be flat, whereas this is a folded piece of fabric inserted between quilt and border :)
