Kimberly Jolly learns a new binding technique from Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts. Edyta explains how to lessen the bulk of your binding using this double-fold technique that will leave your binding soft and durable. Edyta starts by cutting her binding strips 1 ¾" wide. You can find more information on this binding technique in her Scrappy Fireworks and Handful of Scraps Books.

Your technique is so much better and much easier. You don't have to use two fabrics and yes, this does make it bulky. Thank you and your grandmother. 😚😚😚

Working on a quilt now and I'm going to use this method for the binding since I may not have enough of the binding fabric for the traditional 2-1/2" binding.

I love this, but it would have been so much more helpful to have shown how to finish the binding edges. The binding tool isn't going to work since it is designed for a 2 1/2" binding and this is cut 1 3/4'. Many of us do not use batiks, so joining the edges together simply by overlapping them will not work. I will play around with it and figure it out, but how helpful it would have been to have simply included this info in the video. I will edit this to add: I tried this method yesterday on a baby quilt and I'm not a fan. I find it a bit tedious and fussy without any real gain over regular double fold binding. I'm glad I tried it, but it's not for me. Double fold has worked great for me for over twenty years with no issues, no bulk in my corners and with beautiful results, so no sense trying to fix what isn't broken.

If you want a bit wider binding, say 3/8”, would you use a 1&7/8” strip or 2” strip?

When sewing down the binding on the back, do you stitch in the ditch from the top? Or do you sew a 1/4" seam on the back?

Hand stitching on the back is the traditional method...and looks better in my opinion. The two ways you mentioned are both perfectly good options too.

Can you use this technique sewing to the back of the quilt with a flange?

Hello Lillian! Flange binding can be done several different ways. Most methods we have seen, the flange binding is sewn to the back, pulled to the front and stitched down on the front side. If you meant something different by your question, please let us know!
