Happy Friday...what a week. There are lot of ways to make binding. But before I talk about them, we need to know the basics. If you haven't made yourself a 3-in-1 tool yet, you'll save yourself a lot of headache if you do. Enjoy.

Lol I get so stressed and my neck disappears, I've been clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth...and I laugh and grab a tea, take a break and a breath, and remind myself that it's my first quilt for one of our kiddos! They love it already and it'll be warm usable and washable lol !

What is a quilter's knot? How do I sew the binding down on the back? Do I just sew along the edge (parallel to the edge) or should I sew X's, or perpendicular? What keeps the binding down the best?

I wanted you to know that this is the ONLY video I could wrap my brain around. I have tried and tried to learn this method, but I don't see things the way others do. It always looks backwards to me. So, tonight, I stopped and worked frame-by-frame and it WORKED. OMG I am beyond relieved. I'm working on a special gift and just had to have it perfect. THANK YOU from the bottom of my still learning heart.

Lol. Love your tips, tricks and strategies! And as per little funky things, I consider them proof that it is a hand made item, like purposely putting a wrong Stuttgart in a knitted item so you can prove it isn't made in a factory. When my quilt group started up 20 years ago...we would cut the binding into 4 .... do the top, do the bottom..square up and cut off extra...then do the other 2 sides....crazy! Love your videos. Binding has always been the part I like the most. Another tip I use I saw online but sadly don't remember where. After ironing my binding in half I tape one end to a large empty spool wrapping it around the spool, then I place it on extra spool holder I place on my bobbin winder atop my machine. It stays out of my way while attaching it. Works great!

I have plenty of projects not yet binded for ya if ya want to come to mine!😂 god why can't I finish anything! I can't decide what to use to bind the patchwork blanket I made its not quilted just patchwork. I have an old sheet to back it but my blanket is made of woven wool scraps and I'm terrified of cutting the backing so badly not sure how to attach the backing I guess I should pin it and sew it and then bind it after that. I just keep looking at it and not getting anything done because of indecision. Then it goes back on my bed cos I need it to be warm!

Glad to see this, what great tips! When you do the machine binding video, did you ever see that method that uses piping? You round the quilt corners with a dinner plate, then apply the empty piping bias and the bias binding to the front. Then you fill the piping, and you machine sew the back of the binding by doing quilt-in-the-ditch of the piping. I have a quilt I did that way 20 years ago, but I can’t remember all the steps. I prefer machine sewing the whole thing because that much hand sewing is hard on my wrists. I might have used a narrow zigzag to catch the back binding (width 1 of 5, length 2.5). Looking forward to your machine binding expertise.

Karen you are so AWESOME I loved the ideal of not ironing the binding in half in the beginning. I tried your way and it was so much nicer, clean and great looking. Thanks again for your advice and help.

Thank you Karen! I have just finished my first quilt and found this the best tutorial on finishing the binding! A lot of others went too fast and didn’t show how to lay and flip the binding for stitching. Perfect 👍🏼. Great instructions, as usual! You have been a great help in my quilting journey.

Was intrigued by your fussy binding closure method and your 3 in 1 corner method. Just used both on a quilt with beautiful results! Made my tool using an old plastic placement that used to be under a plant so recycled as a bonus. Ty Karen you are the best! 👏

I could do a paragraph of "thank you!" and it wouldn't be enough. I've been struggling with a binding, even though I've made many. Sometimes a youtuber will tell you the "right" way to do something and you want to do it right, but it just isn't right for you. (And this quilt has had something wrong at every step!). You have fixed that. Don't iron it in half. Ok...no more doing that! And sometimes bindings are narrower. Thank you. So I'm not wrong in wanting a narrow binding. I will find my ruler to fold my corners a little more pointed. I got dinged on my corners at the last quilt show I entered. They were right and I should have seen it. So thank you and have a great weekend.

i loved this video. I have quilted for years but excessively since the shut down. LOVE your fussy & flat binding finish because I never could figure out how to turn my fabric without tons of trail and error. You explain it and SHOW it. Thank you! Always iron my binding in half but will try your no iron method on my next quilt. The quilt corner explanation extremely clear and has definitely encouraged me to be much more precise. Will make a 3 in 1 tool. Learned about the quilters knot. I will now do a double thread. I, too, appreciate that you just get right down to the business of teaching. Seems there's always a better way of doing something:)

Thank you so very much for sharing your 3 in 1 tool and especially the quick and fast method of binding a quilt. The way you joined the ends by tucking in the one into the other is just awesome, as I have such a horrid time joining my ends. Thank you also for explaining things in such an understandable manner. I learn so much from each of your tutorials. You have made the process of quilt making much more enjoyable and more streamlined for me.
