I've been trying to find the recipe for these! Can I soak them in baking soda instead of lime?

Are the camotes suppose to turn black while being in the water with the cal?

I'm on day 3 but have not yet done the day 3 boil. Most of my sweet potatoes and all of the squash pieces are mushy. The hardened shell is not holding them together. The water has broken up bits of potato and squash floating int it. What did I do wrong?
