How to make Burnishing tool / Burnisher on the cheap

I always believed that burnishing tools are overpriced so I made one for myself for just 3$ metal HSS steel rod and some scrap wood. The burnisher is an indispensable tool to create the hook on a scraper that will provide a crisp surface on your wood piece. So I encourage you to see the creating process of this homemade tool. Enjoy! Leave your comments and questions. I'll be pleased to answer all of them.

All of need is a few grand for a lathe, then a couple weeks of learning how to use it, a few days to make the handle and BAM I saved 30 bucks. Take that Rockler. 🤣🤣serious note great video love watching people turn wood.

I use a broken or dulled carbide tool from a machine shop. Drill shank, spot-drill, long endmill, etc. Long HSS center drills work as well. All free. Have you considered putting a handle on both ends? I have not done it yet but seems practical for many burnishing operations; possibly one that slips on and off for occasional use? Thanks for the vid :)

+Keith Green Any steel harder than carbon steel will be fine. I've considered but I discard due the shortness of that rod. I didn't find a longer piece of HSS at good price. Anyway it works just perfect like it is now. Thanks for your comment Keith.

You can make that handle with hand tools. I've made a few chisel handles with a smoothing plane, files and sandpaper. Also, you can make a quick poor man's "lathe", by clamping your drill to your workpiece or in your vise and turn the stock that way. It'll be messier, but nothing that sandpaper (and/or files) couldn't solve. At least you'll be able to get rid of the waste quicker than plaining/filing.

For the people complaining that you dont have a lathe, this video is showing how to make a burnisher if you do have a lathe but you can obviously make one without a lathe. Also not every project you see is going to be within your reach so i dont get why youre upset that hes using a tool that you happen to not have. Just think outside the box and work with what you have. Who says your handle needs to be perfectly round?

Wow. Amazing job. So simply made but so beautiful. Maybe because it transpires such care and love for the work well done that it really inspires.

@@WoodworkingBarcelona Muchas gracias, amigo.
