How To Make ANY Lanolin/Oil Undercoating Black. ( Surface Shield , Fluid Film , Woolwax ) In this video I'm going to show you how to take a clear version of any lanolin undercoating and make it a black version. I've had many requests from people wanting to know how to make these undercoating products black. The black versions of these lanolin undercoating products are great for covering existing rust on you car or truck. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the black versions of the products. The overspray is black and messy. Also, in my experience the clear versions eventually turn black from road grime over the course of a year.

@@vqdriver you are welcome, try it out, it should help you, if not....... Please reply back I can try to offer more advice or assistance. I've been using the this product for three years now and love it, it took some fiddling to get everything to work right, and I have not had to adjust it since then.
I use black pigment powder which is normally used to colour epoxy resin. It works reasonably well as it's an ultra fine powder. Of course as it's a pigment, if you are feeling a bit crazy, you can tint your lanolin spray blue, green, red or purple as long as it's a strong colour. But then the only people that will truly appreciate your artistry are those that you run over!

Yep always take a screwdriver and magnet with you when looking to buy a car. Used car dealership special. Although they wont' even oil coat it they'll just spray bomb it with undercoating.
Love surface shield. Started using it on my car, then my dad started using it on his truck and cars, then I started using it on my guns and reloading equipment that’s in storage or high moisture, and now we’re starting to use it on farm equipment going into storage! Absolutely awesome stuff 👌🏻 can’t recommend enough
Thank you - I was hesitant about using Surface Shield because they didn’t have a black version. I get what you’re saying about not needing it to be black and the mess. However - when you don’t have a lift and you’re in your driveway under the vehicle with poor lighting the black allows you to see where you’ve sprayed already. It helps tremendously in that situation. DIY undercoating is a royal pain in the butt - the black product just makes it that much easier.
I personally like the black. I have a silver car. With the clear/straw stuff, you really can't see how much you are layering on the sheet metal, as you see the factory paint through the coating. You waste product on the initial application and subsequent applications. I went black. A quick inspection allows me to see what areas need a touch up. If I see the paint color poking through, it gets re-shot. If you spray a cast component like a steering knuckle with the clear/straw, it turns brown before enough road gunk makes it black. With the browining, you can't tell if rust is poking through, or if it's just dirty. Same principle with the black. I shoot it once. If I see brown on an inspection, its rust poking through. It gets touched up. Same issue happens with high impact areas on components that are painted black. For example, sub frames, lower control arms, and tie rod ends. If you spray the clear/straw stuff, it turns brown. You can't tell if its dirt or if it's rust. You end up re-shooting "just to be sure" and waste more product again. With the black stuff, a simple inspection is all that is needed. If it's NOT black on your yearly inspection, just touch up that area. If you want to change the color of your WW, FF, search the MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheet). Listed are the formulations or the CAS# of the ingredients. If you research the CAS# you can find what ever the pigment is. WW uses "Carbon Black".....powdered printer toner. It's cheap and very available. Mix your own. Save a few bucks.
I'll take the original version. Thanks for the video. I just couldn't imagine the mess that it would make having the graphite in it. Surface Shield is great.
I'm in the UK and we have a product here called lanoguard which I presume is similar to fluid film or surface shield. One of the selling points is that it's non conductive and this can help combat galvanic corrosion as well as not cause issues with electrics. Adding graphite, which is conductive, might make the product less effective. The biggest issue could be causing problems with electrics. Recently had to change the alternator due to an oil leak and although oil isn't conductive, when it burns it turns to carbon, which is, this is what killed the regulator. So my guess is to steer clear of the graphite.

thanks for this video. I just bought a 5 gallon bucket of the fluid film and now I am going to turn it black so I can hide all my rust.
Some like the black but I agree I am not a black fan. I enjoy the amber color it is naturally. Great video as always well done!!
very much appreciated. I've used that Butyl type sound reading before and didn't notice a worth while difference, but I can see how the 3 part system can work more effectively. Before you purchased that brand were you able to develop any solid comparisons across brands to know if that brand may be more or less effective at controlling sound? great video!
Graphite is what you add to coatings/paints/inks to make them electrically conductive. It is not safe to use as a coloring/dying agent near anything electrical
Great video!!!
You're a great resource!
Thanks for the education. Unfortunately I bought a 65 El Camino that has had a recent Rustoleum product sprayed on the undercarriage. I am not sure how well it was prepped or how bad the rust was underneath. Should I try taking it off so I can spray the lanolin method? Or wait until to see if it starts coming off on its own and then try removing it. It’s in Colorado and will be a driver. Sure wished I would have found you earlier, before my purchase. Thanks,
Do you think just using some spray cans of Fluid Film sprayed on the frame will be good enough to do right before winter. It ws done about 2 years ago overall.
Can you do a review or comparison on Xionlab 2 in 1 rust converter & metal primer especially for car undercarriage?
I'm curious have you ever tried any of the undercoating products from Eastwood. I live in the South in Ms. I've tried their spray can undercoating and it turned out fantastic.
I wonder if you could use black cement dye?
I'm sure that powdered concrete/mortar/ stucco / grout dye (mineral oxide powder) would do the exact same thing. Available in Black, Red and Brown in a 700 gram container at the Home Depot for about $20. Very concentrated and one jar will deep dye 3 or 4 of the 50 pound bags of mortar mix or concrete.
Floor pans....protection from the topside, what do you recommend?
What is your opinion on Noxudol undercoating 300/700. Similiar to what some of the import car manufacturers were using? Have you done any comparisons to the fluids film type products
What is thoughts on how graphite effects spray gun? It is a lubricant so interesting consideration
I have a gmc canyon basically same rig as your Colorado. I have 6" lift kit and can see lots of undercarriage. I'm going with your recommended blaster surface shield in clear. can I then give it a shot of black rust paint on the parts that are visible due to the height of the truck?
I'm glad i watched this...
What is the best way to clean the spray gun (and over spray that ends up on the car) once you run Surface Shield through it?
Can i use lanolin oil (cosmetics grade) for undercoating? Im from south east (indonesia) i cant find any fluid film etc in here. Thanks
Thanks for all you videos. Always great information. My own experience, adding/mixing any dry ingredient to a premeasured liquid mixture, would decrease the liquids viscosity some what. My concern is, would this reduce the products ability to creep ?
@Ryan-ob6gp
7 ай бұрын
I doubt it - as graphite is smooth and absorbs no liquid, unlike a fibrous filler. Imagine glass chips in oil. The product would remain liquid, and frankly if anything the graphite would protect it from UV degradation, I imagine.
Does using clear undercoat (or black for that matter), given the oily sheen it can create, ever make it difficult to distinguish between the coat surface and an oil leak?
What about vehicles that go on a soft sand beach? Will the sand stick to it? Am I better off with a product that dries?
Exactly what I thought
Would Black Oxide Powder work better? Just was thinking about this since I believe this should add a layer of protection right? Figured you’d be the best guy to check this out with.
I appreciate your videos and have applied it to my cars. Just did Fluid Film on my BMW e46 to the rear surface rust areas on the differential and frame. When you say clear, do you mean brown?

Yes, the thicker you lay on the product the more brown or tan it becomes.

Any tips for removing factory undercoating?
I wonder whether "Surface Shield" sold in Europe is the same as you show here. The labels are quite different, but the name is the same. I understand that the US Surface shield is based on lanolin - like fluid film seems to be. Any idea of how to remove some sparkles from the windscreen? I tried aceton and Isopropanol, but no chance to get completely rid of the stuff. At best, I ended up with a film on the glass. Regards Heinz
Talking to a guy that does undercoating at a toyota dealership said to me that he always uses clear because the black version doesn't creep as well. I guess maybe due to the graphite. What are your thoughts on this?
Strange, given one of the supposed benefits of the clear/lanolin undercoats compared to eg Dinitrol is that they allow you to monitor how it looks underneath
Interesting.

I might have to do this, I have people that I do cars for that specifically request black and I’m sick of paying a bunch more per 5 gallon container when I could just do this
I'd rather see what's going on, not black it out. Also anyone selling in the future may not want to, it might scare off some buyers thinking you may be trying to hide rust. I'd rather have it translucent and see a little of whats going on so I can attack it with another coat. Clear is where it's at , as you pointed out. I had not even thought of the overspray.. bingo !

How much do I add to turn myself black like Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder?
I’ve been wanting to ask this question about undercoatings, I’ve watched plenty of your vids, but it would seem to me that after doing fresh metal prep, painting on black caulk would be something to try and would resist chipping and delaminating. What are your thoughts and can you try it? Please answer, I’ve asked this before. Thanks.
@FloridaTwoWheelAdventures
4 ай бұрын
Nobody will answer that question because it’s nonsense. How could you possibly paint on caulk to the extent you can spray on lanolin liquid? Inside frames, around frames, inside body panels, etc. is far too intricate and extensive to get with a paint brush. Have you even watched a single video on lanolin spray applications?
Have you ever treated something with linseed oil? Since lanolin products don't ship to sweden I'm curious to try mixing that with some gum turpentine to be able to spray it and some graphite powder for easier tracking of the coverage. That seem to be a really good method and is said to withstand years of rough exposure...although overspray is an issue if you let it dry. What do you think?

As far as guns go, I personally would never put this on guns for rust protection. Just wipe the metal surfaces with a silicone cloth stored in a ziplock bag. If your cloth dries out, add 1 tablespoon of mineral oil to the cloth, ring and twist it to get the mineral oil through the cloth, and a few hours later, your silicone cloth is good as new. Surface Shield is great on cars, trucks, etc.

Ok, I’ll admit I’m completely stupid about this product and what the purpose for it is as well as where to spray it and not to spray it? I have a brand new Kia Niro that’s a charcoal blackish gray color on the exterior of the car. Haven’t even looked at the underneath side yet? I’m assuming this is basically just a protectant to spray on the underside of your vehicle? Kind of like having your vehicle under coated I’m guessing? I’m assuming it helps keep things from rusting over time? Like I said, I know absolutely nothing about this product, but you have me curious and now thinking it may be a good idea to have it sprayed on my new vehicle underneath at least. You would spray the exterior of your vehicle paint would you? I know there is product for spraying on the paint too that’s least suppose to keep vehicles from having dirt, tree sap, etc from sticking to your paint and making them easier to clean. But I’m assuming this product you’re making black isn’t the same product for covering your vehicle paint? Sorry if I’m asking too much? But any answer appreciated
Hey dude, I got a question for you knowing that you work with Blaster now. Is it safe to use on GM wax coated frames? I know fluid film would really soften that wax up and basically render it worthless.
@RepairGeek
Жыл бұрын
My stance is going to differ from Blaster's "official" stance. Me personally: Spray everything down because I know that wax is going to fall off in 5 years treated or not. Blasters Position: Do not use the product on a GM wax frame. With or without the product that wax is coming off if you live in a corrosive environment. Blaster is keeping their backsides covered by not spraying a wax frame.
