Surface Shield vs Fluid Film: Lanolin Rust Prevention
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Surface Shield vs Fluid Film: Lanolin Rust Prevention. This time at the Quick Speed Shop its another lanolin rust prevention shootout! I am going to demonstrate both Surface Shield by PB Blaster and Fluid Film. Both are lanolin, sheep wool oil, and if your car or truck is driven in winter elements then you know how important it is to protect your ride from the ravages of road salt in the winter. Lets compare both Surface Shield and Fluid Film and coat a new Honda Pilot in the process.

We'll see how the Surface Shield holds up.
I’ve been using fluid film since 2016 on ram 2500. Awesome stuff. I’ve also used corrosion x
I use PB blaster stuff all the time. Surface shield on my boats trailer in salt water and salt hasnt touched it.
Can't wait to see the results.
I can tell you that the Surface Shield is not easy to power wash off. it should last excellent. I tried power washing my steel wheel spare so i could bring it in and have the tire changed. I had used it last December... that was June. The stuff seemed excellent. Underside of my vehicle will get a "touch up" this November and recoat the whole thing next fall. Pretty happy with it so far. edit: to add that the Surface Shield smells a lot better than the FF. I used som FF from a spray can inside the doors so i would not have to bother with the compressor and gun. The smell wasn't great for a couple weeks.

If you're re-coating once a year anyway, why spend double for SS? This was my rational when I saw the gallon price of SS vs. FF.

@@red6743 It sticks better to cross members in the front end that get blasted with road spray and splashes.. I really believe it's a better product. Ya' get what you pay for I think, so it comes down to personal preference and I live in the salt-belt so I feel it's money well spent.

ive used both products and much prefer the PB surface Shield, it sticks just like fluid film and doesnt drip much, but it sprays,covers and flows alot better even when ambient temp is cold, (ive had to warm up fluid film in a presto pot to get it to spray decent when cold out) also the PB does not stink like fluid film. it is a bit more expensive, but i was able to get a good price on it when O'reilys had a 20% coupon code online. it is also available in aerosol cans

woolwax WW HV will last indefinitely... very resistant to heavy roadwash ... over 3yrs and no need to reapply in the wheelhouse area. but it does develop a big layer of dirt on the top
I'm very interested in how Surface Shield will look next spring. But it looks by the SDS sheet that it has a very high percentage of petroleum to lanolin though, roughly 80/20. I would think that it might not be so good for rubber? Thanks for doing the video.
@QuickSpeedShop

The bucket info says it won't hurt rubber, but we can see. The FF will also make certain rubbers get a little soft as well.

Great vid and great idea for the pump! Did you use one for the Surface Shield or is it not worth it? I was using a solo cup and pouring that into a gallon milk jug with the bottom cut off into my sprayer bottles. Worked ok, but a pump seems a lot cleaner.
@QuickSpeedShop

I didn't use the pump because I did just pour it in the gun with a funnel. If I was doing a whole bucket I'd set up a pump.
You should keep in mind that the right fender well will always catch more water because of the incline of the street to get the rain away faster, so the right fender well will wash off faster that in mind I would do a comparison in a crisscross pattern RF Fluid Film but RL too. Greets from Germany

I'm not sure which formula it is. It's the one they sell in retail stores.
I tried them both, they both stay liquid and wash off far to easily... I eventually used CRC 06026 Corrosion Inhibitor to undercoat my truck, it is an industrial wax that thoroughly dries and won't wash off anytime soon. I understand it is cosmoline based. I needed to remove it from some areas that I accidentally oversprayed... mineral spirits liquified it but did not remove it, it dried hard again, I had to use acetone to get it off... pretty resilient stuff.

True, I haven’t found it that much cheaper in gallon form. 5 gallons and spray cans seem to be closer in price to FF. From what I have heard and seen, surface shield appears to be competitive or better than fluid film. I’ll try it on my rusty Toyota and see if it can even slow that down a bit.. but not sure I want to buy more than a gallon..
@trentwheeler6161

I found the same thing. The gallon pails are very expensive! People are having massive issues with the cans not wanting to spray though. This time around I did the right thing. I put fluid film on the underbody of my Camry. They had 1 gallon pails at rural king for $40 which was hard to beat in any form especially readily available without paying shipping. Previously I used Krown and was very surprised how well it stayed in place during the winter of '19 to '20.

I was ready to switch to Surface Shield bc I've seen tests that shows it lasts longer....but then I saw the price vs FF. You can purchase 2-gals of FF for the same price of 1-gal of SS. I used to work for IDOT in Illinois. We put down so much salt it destroys everything. I use Fluid Film but use whatever you want. I just purchased a 1973 Chevy K10 from Montana that's virtually rust free. I sprayed 5 coats of SPI Epoxy primer on the frame and underside and then just recently hit it hard with fluid film. My local body shop man told me to spray oil in the doors and rockers/cab corners and inside up over your wheel wells. Never put anything on it other than like Epoxy primer that I painted it with that won't wash off. Some products stick you don't want that. Good luck in the salt!!

This guy is a messy hack of an operator. I would never indiscriminately spray someones vehicle in the manner he did. Spraying under the hood in that hectic/sloppy manner said it all. Oh, a proper mixer for a drill works MUCH better at actually mixing things. They are only a few bucks. Wall plaster mixers work best, imo. Start there.

Hey, guess what gets everywhere including under the hood? Road spray and salt! I coat everything to keep it from rusting, including door jambs and under the hood. No one has complained about too much FF. They want to protect the car they paid $30-40-50k for from rust. I spray everything except the engine, exhaust, and brakes.
