Undercoating Sprayer Buyer's Guide. $35 vs $350. What's the difference?

Undercoating Sprayer Buyer's Guide. $35 vs $350. What's the difference? In this video we are going to take a look at 5 different undercoating sprayers. What makes a $350 undercoating sprayer better than a $35 sprayer? In this video I have undercoating guns from 4 different manufacturers: TCP, PMT, Woolwax, and Lemmer. Each sprayer has it's pros and cons. That is what we are going to go over is how each gun sprays and talk about any attachments that come with each gun. For spraying demonstrations I sprayed Woolwax (a very thick product) at about 60 degrees. I show the maximum flow for each sprayer as well as the minimum flow for each.

I recently upgraded from the wollwax pro gun ($99) to the lemmer rp460hd and couldn't disagree with you more lol the lemmer gun sprays 10x better than my wollwax gun ever did and with the pressurized pot no need to warm up the product anymore, it cut my job time in half because it sprays soo much faster , and you adjust the air with the regulator and the product on the back of the gun, I fill the pot with a 5gal pump dispenser works great no funnel necessary and no mess, no to mention the cavity hoses are half the size and fit into waaaay more openings!

Almost every single inner cavity 360 spray extension nozzle are made for MALE !!!!!! TOP !!!!! SPRAY !!! CAN !!!! NOT FEMALE!!!! Now Surface Shield has female tops on the can, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find any inner cavity extension without paying a ridiculous amount of money for a plastic tube and a brass nozzle! KBS works for an insane price. You can buy extension for male spray can for under $10

A tip for the ends on the end of the tubes. You can use safety wire twisted tightly around the hose to clamp them together and not increase the diameter so you can still get into the holes easily.

I reside in Upstate New York State. We get the most snow of any State in the lower 48. We deal with mega tons of road salt, brine and calcium chloride. I undercoat with lanolin products on my trucks. My complaint is that it is difficult to transfer the product into the small opening of the spray bottle. The sprayer manufacturers should take the lead from the mayonnaise bottle makers. Seeing that the lanolin undercoating products are a similar consistency of mayonnaise, they should make the undercoating spray bottled opening the same width as the mayonnaise jars.

I bought the RP460 (I call it the Mack-Daddy) and start with the longest hose to spray inside all frame and body cavities then spray the outside of the frame and underside of the box/cab. I use lots of product and apply it fairly thick everywhere. I had 4 other sprayers already when I bought it and threw out some of them after using the RP460. It is the best at getting the most thick product the furthest into the cavities where it is needed most. Don’t cheap out here guys. It is an investment. Spread the cost out over doing 1-2 vehicles per year for ten years and it is sooo worth it.

Yea, but for those of us who are only doing 1-2 vehicles per year, it aint worth the price difference. You're literally spraying goop on the bottom of the car. Get that shit on there and be done with it, don't need some fancy spray pattern when in a week its going to be all black with dirt and oil and shit anyways. Professional wise I could see the argument for time saved, but for the typical DIY'er who's just getting under their car and glooping that shit on to keep their shitbox from turning into a rusted shitbox, who gives a shit if it saves you an extra 5 minutes or so?

last year I wanted to spray my car, I tried a venturi sprayer. that didn't do it for me so I bought a pressure pot style gun. a really good one that is available here in germany. a 3300 HSDR from Vaupel. it took an hour or two to get used to it but on a sunny day with a tiny tiny compressor I had all things done in the evening. The gun is amazing I think because it also keeps pressure over hours in the pot. it is quite similar to your last one shown, also weirdly small opening but that's ok. I wouldn't want to use anything else anymore. buy cheap, buy twice. and only coat yourself

I have the same lemmer rp460hd I bought this fall for my own diy stuff. I haven’t had an issue spraying fluid film with it, although I like it good and thick under there. It’s my own so I paint it on good. I have been able to get it dialed down enough for light application with the air pressure and trigger modulation. The screw on the back is actually not air it’s for the fluid needle spring pressure you can have set so hardly anything comes out. I also pretty much exclusively spray with the wands for everything and don’t use the fan tips. The smaller smaller 90 degree one will spray out less than the Deluxe one. The one thing I do miss is a second container as I was running black and clear fluid film. My clear I had a 5 gallon pump but the black I was trying was just in the gallon cans so it was a little awkward to pour in. I was quoted at $120 for another pressure container which I’m debating on because I think I am going to switch to black for everything minus some visibly panel areas around doors and such.

I am looking at getting an undercoating sprayer to spray my vehicles and maybe a friends. I had been looking at the Fluid Film sprayer kit, but now I see this Woolwax kit and it is a bit cheaper although not a huge difference. Other than number of bottles, is there much of a difference? Also, hard to tell but I'm wondering if the Fluid Fillm kit has smaller diameter wands/hoses and will fit in places better. Any help/info would be much appreciated.

How would you recommend washing the undercoating after applying the fluid film? I'm in Michigan, and I'm buying a new 2023 car. I want to protect it with fluid film, but should I not use a pressure washer to wash the undercarriage after applying it? If I should wash it, I read that people said it'd take it off... and if it does take it off, should I re apply it every 6 months.. every year? If you can help, I'd really appreciate your opinion and time.

About compressors: You can get away with using a small single stage air compressor for something like this. Something like 4.7 or 5 gal works fine as long as its the kind with 2 tanks. I forget what you call them, but if you set them up properly they work like a 2stage and they will run a cup gun or gravity feed just fine. I used to spray contact adhesive through a cup gun with this setup, so I know it will work with undercoat.

I have the NHOU version of the woolwax $100 sprayer and just got the woolwax supreme sprayer. The $100 is better! The supreme one has issues with the air and product flow both fading away at different times, first the product will slow down but it's still spraying as hard as it was then I will get the product back and then the air pressure will fade away. AND THE REGULATOR HAS THREADS THAT DON'T FIT ANY AIR FITTINGS OR ANY OTHER FITTINGS TO ADAPT IT AT THE HARDWARE STORE! on the plus side they did say they will send me all the new attachments for the supreme for free.

I personally own the lemer 460 and the only thing I agree with what you said was that you can't adjust the fluid volume though. The rest your off base. Its primary job as a professional gun is to be used with wands. I recommend switching the gun and attachments to regular sized air fittings as there easier to come by and much cheaper. I've made many wands and by saying where the small angle one will fit in comparison to the deluxe swivel one is off the small one works great for getting in door bottom holes I went as far as cutting my small wand at a 45 degree right at the bend and smashed it together so it fits in the small door holes and atomizes to a very fine spray. I've put NH Oil, fluid film, and some wk sealout which isn't availible to the regular public. It's a great gun it's built to a much better standard then the other ones. It's not built for doing the entire underside of a car. It's built for cavities and crevices.

  • @RepairGeek

    @RepairGeek

That is my point exactly. It works great for inner cavities but $350 is a lot of coin for a gun that is dedicated to inner cavities only.

I have a crazy idea. Maybe it's worth for you (from the content perspective and "science") to try it out and make a video about it: What about refilling empty spray cans or any kind of aerosol cans with undercoating products and use compressed air for the propellant? There are a lot of videos out there showing the process but I wonder if it's possible to fill them with undercoatings. So this could be a method for the broke folkz, no need for an expensive and large air compressor. A regular air pump should be enough to "fill" the spray can. What do you think?

  • @ShainaReed30

Air pressures to high causes low transfer efficiencies , with these guns /sprayers that are siphon feed are very low, take a hint from what the automotive painting industry changes over the decades... everyone (smart) converted to gravity feed guns... what you are spraying.... a pressure feed sprayer is the best! To keep your products viscous, get a old hot plate put your 5 gallon pail of water on it and.... voilà a thin viscosity product....your welcome!
