Hi everyone, I’m Christan Long!
I am an adventure traveler who grew up as a part of The Long Family of Gorge River. We are the most isolated family in New Zealand. We live 2 days walk from the nearest road on the South Island West Coast, between Haast and Milford Sound.
In this video, I will show you how to make an epic Northern Lights Time lapse.

First of all I’ve got to say I’m not an expert in photography. However, I do spend a lot of time doing photography and I’ve spent a lot of time out there taking time-lapses of Northern lights. So I thought I would share with you my experiences.
We will go through three examples of timelapses I have shot this week.
They occur near the Arctic and Antarctic circles, so first head to the Arctic or Antarctica!
Always use manual focus!
I use an Iso of 2000
Shutter speed between 3 to 8 seconds
Get used to your camera, you can practise on stars first! Once the Northern lights start you want to have it all ready to go...

Have been hanging out for some southern lights in NZ! Saw them from just south of Christchurch for the first time a few years ago. Just amazing 🤩 Slim pickings ever since. Can’t imagine what it would be like to see them on a regular basis as you would in Norway?

Every 11 years you will see them in NZ when they are the strongest. I think the next time is 2024 or 25.
I have enjoyed your previous videos of the Northern Lights and one day hope to see them for myself. You are looking well, maybe just need a bit more of a tan. lol . Look after Iz and Merry Christmas to you and your Folks.
