How to Make a Video Game Soundtrack (from scratch) | Art of Game Design | OST/VGM
Ойын-сауық
Hello and welcome back to another video!
Today I go in-depth through the actual process of creating Video Game music and creating a Soundtrack, if you're a Solo Developer or a small team (or anything above or in-between!).
I tackle a CHARACTER THEME, and BATTLE THEME, a SAD/EMOTIONAL THEME and a AMBIENT/AREA-BASED THEME. I hope the video gives you can learn from the process, gain some tools, inspiration, and start working on your own music.
TIMESTAMPS (Provided by c4tt):
Character theme (2:33):
2:33 -- 3:15 (SoundFont Instruments)
3:15 -- 5:16 (Discovering a melody)
5:16 -- 5:45 (Variating melody)
5:45 -- 8:40 (Chords)
8:40 -- 10:02 (B Section)
10:02 -- 12:27 (Reforcing the Melody, Bassline and Effects)
12:27 -- 13:39 (Intro and Right Ear Reinforcement)
13:39 -- 15:11 (Percussion)
15:11 -- 16:20 (Outro Section and Loop)
Battle Theme (16:34):
16:34 -- 20:44 (Intro, Chords, BPM/Tempo and Build-up)
20:44 -- 24:52 ("Drop")
24:52 -- 29:33 (Other Section and Start Transition)
29:33 -- 29:52 (Check the SoundTrack Out!)
Melancolic/Sad Theme (29:52)
29:52 -- 31:10 (Tips for a Sad Theme)
31:10 -- 33:03 (Melody, Bassline and.. music box?)
33:03 -- 34:07 (Chords, Snares And Second Melody)
34:07 -- 37:05 (Tips And Second Section)
37:05 -- 38:08 (Transition, Outro Section, Triangle Wave, Pad)
38:08 -- 38:53 (Explanation)
Ambient Track (38:53):
38:53 -- 39:22 (Instruments)
39:22 -- 40:18 (Area Look And Motif) (motifs are patterns from other musics, in this case he used the character theme one)
40:18 -- 40:37 (Ambience and Chords)
40:37 -- 40:55 (Character Theme Modified Motif)
40:55 -- 41:10 (bass that sound like a 808)
41:10 -- 41:33 (Automated Arpeggio And Vinyl Effect)
41:34 -- 41:36 existential crisis
41:36 -- 42:01 (Valhalla Vintage Verb, train vibe)
42:01 -- 42:28 (Finishing Track Timelapse)
The music I created for this video are the first 4 tracks of this album:
--- jaies.bandcamp.com/album/vign...
--- / vignettes-of-vgm
It was all created using the Earthbound, Yoshi's Island, Chronotrigger, Donkey Kong Country, and Mother 3 soundfonts in sforzando. Other synthesizers were used occasionaly like Fabfilter Twin 2, FM8, and SERUM. I used the DAW FL Studio 20 to create the music.
I downloaded the SF2/SFZ (Soundfont) files from HERE: www.williamkage.com/snes_sound...
I take Inspiration from Toby Fox, (Undertale Composer) and Nightmargin (ONESHOT Composer) adnd Shogo Sakai (MOTHER 3 Composer).

"You don't need to know what you're doing if it sounds good." That's pretty much been my method haha. I have years of non-professional musical experience, but in percussion, so my knowledge of chord progressions is very lacking. That doesn't mean I don't intend to learn still, but I've been able to write a lot of music so far just following my ear. I feel that listening to a lot of music helps with your intuition of what works and being able to play around until something decent pops out. Knowledge of music theory is of course still super valuable though!

I have this vague idea for a game where you play as a robot called DJ and you fight other robots who represent different genres of music. For instance, CyberPunk represents rock music, DJ Slime represents future bounce, Pharaoh represents classical and so forth. @Jaies_

Under Fair Use law, using soundfonts to create an original work of music is not illegal. The reason Toby Fox could do it is because there's nothing wrong with it, if there was, Toby would have been sued or his game Cease and Desisted at it's very beginning. Imagine how Ironic it is that he got Undertale on Nintendo switch and he's using nintendo sounds. I'm sure somewhere deep in the Nintendo law books there is something saying that soundfont use is copyright infringement, but so far it has never been enforced, therefore you're safe!

I hope I'm not being rude, but was anyone else really bothered by the background music of the video overlapping with the tracks? Maybe I'm nitpicking, but it muddied the sound and I had to pause the video for a bit 😅

sorry about that! I tried my best to mute them whenever I playback the track but sometimes it wasn't executed well.
For someone who have no idea about making music this is really helpful ! Thanks for making this
This was really neat! Wasn't boring at all. I enjoyed seeing your creative process and watching all of the trial and error. I feel like that sort of approach is really important when making music. All about expressing ideas and making people feel things, no need to adhere to strict rules. Good stuff!
Battle music reminds me of the Squaresoft "PlayOnline" music.
This is one of the only good FL studio tutorials.

Crazy this is the last upload. I've come back to this video multiple times over the past year or two. Seems like a new watch every time.
For those who want to learn some basic music theory I highly recommend this player list kzread.info/head/PLTKhUdPIHIuhhCrMuKJWcjnXUfAN3f5Mn Then come back to this video cuz this guy is good
Is there a way we can use those soundfonts? Like a download to them?

Hey man, this is a great video and you are talented at music and at entertaining, i enjoyed sitting and listening to these really catchy songs and also your very chill voice! Thanks for the video!
I LOVE this video. It helped me so much! Hope I can see some more videos come out on this channel.
Tip : For indie developers fl studio is a bit expansive so go for Reaper it's 60$ and it can do even more stuff.

I think Cakewalk is very good and similar to FL Studio, and free! And you can hide everything in the program that scares you, like me!

I’ve got 6 songs for my indie game, Mini Stitch: Master Assassin. It has 30 in the OST. I could make this big!

I was looking for tips on which software to use for making a game soundtrack, then I found this and sat through the whole thing rather spellbound. Watching other people work and explain why they do things is, for me, one of the best and fastest ways to learn. Thanks for this, it was inspiring and helpful and reminded me once more of how much I love making music.
dude i actually really like the songs you created in this video :D specially the emotional and character theme
Thank you everyone for watching. I hope this journey helps you. Check out the music made here: jaies.bandcamp.com/album/vignettes-of-vgm soundcloud.com/jaiess/sets/vignettes-of-vgm

Hey dude thanks for your great and informative videos on game music. A couple days ago I bought the best selling Game Music Course on Udemy and I realized the Instructor who claims to have been teaching 2007 is far less adept than me and you. And when I realized this I could only think of this video and how much more information I learned from it than the Udemy course. Thank you for this video.
