Cool alternative! And sphagnum moss is actually very renewable and sustainable. It grows on top of peat bogs and only takes about 5 years to reproduce. The peat moss that grows underneath sphagnum moss is the one that takes thousands of years and should not be harvested for houseplants. Sphagnum moss =/= peat moss

I've also found some gems at my local reptile/amphibian store in terms of live plants, for a fraction of the nursery price.

I just made a couple with orchid bark, I mean in the wild they grow on bark... Fingers crossed it works 🤞

Hi precious, before i move my plants on pole , I use my aquarium filter sponge , the white one ☝🏾 like cotton, just tied it right under the plant node , just to keep water and heat on this spot , roots will pop out rapidly. I’ve tested it on : philodendron/ mayoi, florida, monstera Peru and his look alike … all those plants are in wood / leca/ perlite + soil hyper chunky so I can water as much I want . My fertiliser is obviously aquariums filter dirty water 😅.

It's a great substrate, and I used it for some orchids in the past, but ended up switching to sphagnum moss in the end for environmental reasons really. Be interesting to see how it does as a pole though. People should be mindful that when buying tree fern fiber, to try to get ones from New Zealand, as those from South America and parts of Asia are not always ethically harvested and there was little regulation as to where it was being sourced (sadly, many were cut down in rain forests, etc). Also be mindful that tree ferns do grow slowly - unlike moss which can have a turn around of a few years - so more people using it could result in pressure on the market which can have disastrous effects.

@@TheLecaQueen Tree fern fiber is a terrific substrate and growing medium and it is being used (again) a lot more now in plant culture, particularly in orchid culture (I grow species orchids as well as too many plants requiring moss poles - according to my husband at any rate lol). Decades ago, orchids were widely grown in tree fern fiber, as were a lot of plants that we'd buy in nurseries. Unfortunately, high demand meant that a lot of species of ferns in the America's and Asia are now endangered, as they would be cut down from native forests to meet market demand, so a lot of people switched to moss instead of the fiber. As with most things, we should be mindful of where we source our material. I don't use tree fern fiber any longer and haven't for over a decade now. How it's sourced in NZ for the most part is from private land where some wish to clear or remove vegetation and most of the time, they will use a helicopter to lift them out once they are cut down, much like they do with sphagnum moss to reduce damage to the land with heavy machinery. As I've noted, it is a terrific substrate and I'd rate it as one of the best as it takes a long time to break down. So I am very interested in how it will work for you as an alternative to moss poles! I hear you about how fast sphagnum moss dries out and I live in QLD, so it can often dry out within a few days - I'm now converting those poles to plastic backed ones to reduce how fast it dries. I stopped spraying them with a water bottle and not just take them outside or to the shower and give them a quick shower once every couple of weeks. Saved my sanity.

What about coconut coir? I’ve seen it recommended as a potting alternative for spag, but have never personally used it. Anyone have any idea how it would do in a pole?

Love the idea and curious to see how this works in the long run. I have an actual tree fern growing in doors in perlite and I’m actually experiencing fungus gnats inside the trunk of the plant itself, as I have to keep the trunk moist at all times. I hope it doesn’t happen for you but definitely something to look out for given the similar conditions.

Try Steinernema nematodes against the fungus gnats, if you can get your hands on them.

Oh, that is even harder to get in Germany than sphagnum:) But I like the color. I'm curious how it works.

Tree fern fibre is amazing, but it's much more expensive than sphagnum moss (at least where I live) and to create a few 24¨ high poles I don't even want to know how much I'd need of it and how much it'd cost in total 😅

I have actually. I made a rockwool pole but could not get the pH neutral enough to use for my plants in leca. The rockwool was changing the pH of my reservoir too much I gave up on it.

Not at all similar to peat moss. This is made out of trees unlike peat moss which is harvested from peat bogs and has more of a detrimental environmental impact when harvested.

Great content! I am thinking of making a pole with the tree fern fiber against the solid backing of the plastic pole, and coco chunks on top of that. This might help contain the tree fern fiber if it dries and is somehow tapped about accidently.

Tree fern fibre is readily available and legally harvested in Tasmania. Most places sell 20 litre bags for around $14.

Could you also use some sort or easy break netting that roots could break or grow thru and would also keep the TFF from falling thru too ? Isn’t TFF expensive though? But I think it has much better nutritional values though. If you just said that as I was typing… your our Queen for a reason!

In the Philippines, especially in my region, it is illegal to cut tree ferns off from the wild because they are endangered.

I would definitely encourage you do do the right thing for your environment, do what is legal and use something else in your pole.

How long does it retain water for ? Is it better? Moss dries out far too quickly for me

Can you please do an update once the pole has gone dry? I’m intrigued if it will be messy and lose again, I have a dog so if it gets knocked then it won’t stay in 🤣

Hi 🙂 l was just wondering if you knew if it was the NZ Forestry Service that said this is sustainable and renewable or NZ Ecologists ? Tree ferns grow at the rate of one inch per year, here and in NZ. Legally, they can only be cleared from private land after tagging, and from corporate bought indigenous bush land, for the timber and paper suppliers. I am not sure how Ecologists would of said this is sustainable, or even renewable considering at their rate of growth. Sphagnum moss can be fully renewed within three to five years. If people are dead set on using Tree Ferns they should probably find their nearest nursery and buy the tagged stumps (white official tags), if they're lucky they may be able to buy them for $30 per foot, but chances are they'll be around the $50/$60 mark per foot. Quick note : if you find something growing on your TFF that looks similar to Liver Wort, just leave it because you've got active spores. 👍 Also, for anyone that may be thinking about harvesting them from indigenous bushlands, the fines are incredible and there can be jail time involved. Rangers are always out and they will catch you.

How about mixing moss and the fiber? How the moss disintegrate if it gets too dry?

This sounds really interesting, but not highly available in Europe. :( The only supplier seems to be 'Fernwood' and one 10L bag costs over 20 Euro/Dollars. IdK how long 10l will last when you put it in a pole. Only vendors I found so far are located in the Netherlands or in the UK, so you can add around 15 for shipping I guess. In the US it seems to be half the price. :)

At 7:21 you mention you don't want any of the tree fern portion inside the nursery pot? Can you explain why?

The fern fibre will be moist thus having that moist organic matter next to my roots constantly risks root rot. Hope that makes sense.

Here in the US, tree fern fiber is SO much more expensive than sphagnum moss and so I can’t let enough go to make an entire pole. I’d love to if I can find it cheaper.

Not that I have seen but some people have reported it so I guess it does happen.

I love the color but I would have made it a bit slimmer and rounder. Maybe without the plastic backing.

I use the Fernwood New Zealand brand. I use this one because they explain how and where they source their fibre. I recommend researching the company before you buy the product.

Sphagnum moss is renewable, not like peat moss. Tree Fern Fiber is 4 times the price of Sphagnum in the US, not sure about other Countries. I’m sure it works great. 💚 Love that it’s not hydrophobic.

How long does it take to grow a tree fern for harvest? I thought they were slow growers. I heard they grow 50 millimeters or 5 centimeters a year at most. I think harvesting kills them .

Hello, it is hard to do individual updates due to the nature of KZread. I do show the plants in other videos like Q&As. The pole is ok but I had to chop the plant because it was not growing well because of lack of light.

I'm so curious how you made out! I'm thinking of trying Lee from Kill This Plant's PVC pipe moss pole design but I'm uncertain how that would work with the Tree Fern Fibre since it's so loose and airy. How did you you find it as it dried?

Leca queen your microphone is faulty. It's like a buzzing high pitched sound when your speaking (mic on) but when it's sped up between cuts it goes away so it's deffo not the music track. If it's wireless it could be picking something up like a router / mobile phone / light fitting it's almost similar to the interference that flourecent tube lights emit or a power supply / charger

I know why you think that, however, leca is notorious for drying pretty quickly. Unless I want to use pumps to meek the leca moist, a leca pole just does not work, I have tried! Even using a wick does not work.

nah! i use cocochips instead of the pricey sphag moss and been doing it for years and my plants are growing fine. I even wrap my poles with grafting tape to contain moisture as i have low humidity in my area. Plants are fine and leaves are bigger and taller. I hope these tree fern fibers are grown from a farm and not stolen from the mountains in tropical countries. They use to steal that from the mountains and chop both ends and turn it upside down and plant orchids in asia.

I encourage people to use what is legally available. If Tree Fern Fibre is illegal or not available one can use other media in the poles such as coco chips, moss, potting mix and many others. Check out the link I have provided in the pinned comment above that shows how the tree fern fibre I use is ethically sourced and harvested from private forests.

Just be careful because tree fern fiber is not that sustainable. It takes a lot of time to grow tree ferns where that is from. As long as the seller makes it sustainable, it should be good.

You have to stop and think where this tree fern moss comes from. Swathes of diminishing rainforest! The idea of our beautiful tree ferns being pushed through a shredder brings me to screaming tears.
