I think you have done a great job with your plants. You make the process look simple because you are systematic and disciplined with your work flow. Most people become too obsessed with maintenance and overdo things or are neglectful. You have found a balance without creating a lot of fuss. Clarity of mind reflects in your plant journey.

Your plants are so gorgeous! Definitely inspiration for me. It's nice to see small plants that haven't grown up on their moss poles, yet. I was thinking that would be weird looking, but also easier to start from a small plant and I see that it's not weird looking at all when the little one is surrounded by big, lush plants.

This Q&A was very helpful!! I don’t have enough time in the day to even *think* of looking on Instagram so *thank you* for mentioning on your KZread channel the questions you have gotten on Instagram. Ever since I saw your channel pop up on my KZread feed, I have been fascinated with your concept and use of the moss pole. That the moss pole is an extension of the growing medium rather than simply being a structural support is, in my mind, an “out of the box” unusual and creative concept. Because many of us have limited floor space, I think the idea of focusing on *controlled* vertical plant growth is very relevant. I think that even though you’ve only been avidly gardening indoors for about 2-3 years, the results you have had with your plants is remarkable!! Although I am big on reading theory, I like your philosophy of speaking only from your experiences. I look forward to your future posts and have subscribed to your channel.

I really appreciate the tutorial on how to make moss poles as well as providing valuable information on how to cure them (i.e., letting them dry out) before storing. I truly understand that what works for one person may not necessarily work for me etc. In general, your responses to the questions from your subscribers are very helpful and informative.

I spent Friday making moss poles. Managed to get 4 done and plants potted up with their new poles. Did another 2 today. Thank you for sharing your technique for making them.

Also. I got some gutter guard material instead of a square piece of material from Bunnings. So its a roll of 90mm wide and as long as you want it. I figured as im just doing this once or twice as an experiment to begin with it felt like i could get a bigger length pole with less cutting and possible waste. It may even be able to allow me to let the pole lenght out from 70mm to 90mm if i need to in spaces across it's length. I will let you know when I've tamed this beast of a monstera! But as an amateur that wants less waste it seems efficient!

Loving your channel! I made my first moss poles last weekend and planted four plants. In the US, I ordered 5ft wire covered mesh, New Zealand sphagnum moss and black cable ties from Amazon. I used a tin snip tool to cut the mesh. Hope this helps fellow US planty friends

I did make my very first moss pole yesterday while watching this video. Tried a different kind of moss pole last year and after I tried and failed (I kinda forgot to keep it moist, as winter/heating season started), I wasn't really up for another wet/moist moss pole. Had to cut back the scindapsus and she is still on her way of recovery. But after I watched, I guess, every video, I thought I'll give it another try. So I went to the hardware store (Bauhaus in Germany) and got myself some coated wire (5meters long, 50cm high, the cheapest one I could find) and ordered some (quality) moss. And today I potted up a monstera adansonii with the moss pole (with chunky substrate). My second one which I saved from a friend last year (was barely a stem cutting, sitting on the balcony to die). My first one is already to tall/big for a shorter pole. I have a few plants for this kind of moss pole but as the adansonii is a) one of my favourite plants and b) really easy to take care of ,in my experience, my decision was made. And now I will wait and keep the moss moist for that roots to grow. :) It's gonna be amazing. I have no doubt. :D Thanks for the videos and for giving me "the push" to try again. Because your plants look amazing and I like the approach of chop and extent and using the vertical space given in an apartment. Have a great day, everyone :)

I am loving this video! As you know, I am in the process of making my own moss poles for my monstera for the first time. I have decided to use the same materials as you have here with a bamboo pole for strength pushed through the middle of it. My question is, how packed should my mesh be with moss to be effective? Hard to quantify the density of the moss. I’d say 6/10 - dense enough to have enough moss in there but not too dense so there is still aeration

In NZ, you can find the wire at Bunnings but you need to go to Mitre 10 for the sphagnum moss.

There are predatory mites available online in Europe and the States, ideal for when you have an infestation. Must exist in Australia as well.

To Sydney plant guy love your videos I’m binge watching all of them 😂. Anyone in the USA found the clear pots I found the repotme ones but they don’t seem to be the right height to support the pole. If anyone has found them I would appreciate it thank you 😊.

I have a monstera that's grown mature (and too tall) in a large pot full of soil with one of those ready made horrible "moss" poles that do nothing. The new leaves are getting smaller and smaller and I don't like how it's growing. How can I begin to transfer it to a moss pole? Do I chop it and stick it back in the soil with a new proper moss pole? Or will it die if it has no roots in the soil? Can I even propagate it when it's that large?

I'm a relatively new plant lover, also living in Sydney and it's nice because often people I follow live elsewhere with different weather conditions and products available. I recently got a verrucosum and you convinced me to make a moss pole with exactly the same moss/coated wire etc. However I didn't leave it out to dry because I only made one to put my verrucosum on just a couple of days later. A couple of days after setting my verrucosum on it I noticed lots of fine white hairs with tiny black dots at the end growing out of the moss pole (I would attatch an image but I don't think I can here). I know you said you don't have personal experience with fungal growths on your poles but have you ever seen anything like that happen? I have tried leaving it next to an open sliding door inside and outside in the sun as much as possible hoping it would naturally kill any spores and help dry out the moss but ofcourse I am also worried about my new verrucosum trying to start rooting to the pole needing moisture... Not sure if I need to try an antifungal spray/take more drastic measures? What would you do? If you have any suggestions at all I would greatly appreciate it! (And won't hold it against you if they don't work ofc 😊). TIA!

Are there any antifungal sprays you would reccomend or have you heard of any that will be safe for the plant too? (I know next to nothing about this 😅). Thinking about trying hydrogen peroxide first because I have used it before in soil but don't know if it will be strong enough to keep the fungus at bay... At the moment my pole is dry and the fungus has stopped growing but I suspect the spores are not dead and the fungus will return when I dampen the pole again...

@@normalguy7898 i let it dry out in the sun then tried spraying with hydrogen peroxide and then dampening the pole just around the areas I want the aerial roots to grow (so it's not all too damp). That seemed to be okay but I ran out of hydrogen peroxide and found eco fungacide spray from bunnings so have since sprayed that on any parts that look like maybe mould and it seems to have kept it at bay? I have also been making an effort to keep it ventilated by a sliding door which has probably helped... I am about to go away though so we will see how it goes without my helicopter parenting 😅🤣 ... good luck with yours!!

Not all Bunnings stock the same mesh as yours. My local one used to but have changed to another type, which isn’t as good. I bought some in the hope I could make it work, but the squares are 50 x 50, so they’re too wide. And the wire isn’t strong enough, it feels like it could topple over. I’m going to source the wire from another supplier. This isn’t an uncommon thing to experience when living regionally in Australia. Many big box stores don’t supply the same products across the nation

The self watering pot won’t keep the moss pole moist though. In general I don’t really use self-watering. That’s my job!! :P

That’s mainly depending in the size of the root system, not the plant itself. I usually wait for secondary roots. Check out my very first video where I pot up a small monstera on a moss pole for the first time :)

I have large plants in pots outside that can fall in high winds. To help stop the problem, I sit the pot with the plant in a second pot, which I've placed bricks in to anchor. I'm thinking that a large indoor plant could be treated the same.

Not all fertilisers are the same. You want to make sure the fertiliser has all the nutrients a plant needs :)

Hi Jan, can you bury existing roots in to a moss pole? As in, to move a crawler to vertical? My aeroid rooted horizontally in to the soil, and I wanted to make him climb. Thank you 😊

I would not recommend growing a crawler vertically. If you want to get the best out of your plants grow them in line with their natural growth pattern :)

I love, love, your show …… I live in Texas, I can’t find the chunky bark you use, I can find the other items needed. But your bark looks so healthy sounds good when you add to your tub.. My second question where do you get your sphagnum moss. Ours has twigs and other unwanted items.. dirty.. also in Small bags.. Ty very much..

Hi ,Watching for second time , you dampen your moss before u start your moss poles ?. I missed that , would settle my moss a bit I learn something every time I do a rewatch

I wonder: I have found a single black (adult) Thrips on my Thai Constellation. Where there is one there is more I guess. I have been using beneficial mites for the last couple of weeks as I kinda had a "weird feeling" but couldn't pin it down really. In case I loose the battle and have to use sytemics for the first time and I am wondering: a) my plants are all in my bedroom. Did you put the plants back in your sleeping area after you sprayed them down with the Bayer systemic? I am not able to get exactly yours but of course there are other systemics around. and b) have you ever tried watering the poles with a solution of a systemic? Do you think that would work as they often recommend watering the plant because of the stage of thrips that is still in the soil. Well, problem for all those watering through the pole, not the pot 🫣 I'm not looking for a "do this not this" answer but rather if be happy to hear your thoughts on that. Thank you!

I wait for the leaves to dry before I put them back after I have treated them :) never had any pest issues within the pole/pot itself. I just treat the leaves

I'm not new to plants (I have probably around 20)but I'm new to philodendron. I really wanted a verrucosum after seeing yours, but after I heard from multiple people that it's a nightmare, I decided to not get one just yet. I really like Gloriosum and Melanochrysum. Which one do you recomand and what advice do you have? Thanks in advance.

Splendid or majestic definitely another option for you, if you want "half verrucosum" in your collection without the nightmare.

Hello i just wanna ask how do you install your moss pole in your pot? Im just curious how come the pot is not falling while you are holding the pole and shaking them.. thanks in advance...

I just pot it up :) the roots hold it all together

Do you insert the root inside the moss? How long does the root take to attach to the pole?

No the plant grows roots into the moss pole itself. How long that takes really depends on the plant and its conditions

Hi, I saw your channel and decided go make a moss pole. I've put it with my monstera adansonii. A week later I've watered the moss as it seemed dry. Another week later... the moss was covered in MOLD! What do I do? I've used sphagnum moss. I was wondering why the leaves are getting yellow, so I assume its due to mold? How do I save my monstera now?

If your moss grows mould is would usually be because the moss was stored incorrectly by whoever produces/packages it. You can try and anti-fungal spray & make sure there is airflow :)

Another great video! Question. Can I use coco fiber instead of moss? Will it have the same benefit? Thanks in advance.

Coco fibre (assuming you are ferrimg to coir) doesn’t have much water retention capacity so it won’t. You can try coco chips instead :)

Can I attach a larger monstera to a moss pole? (About 12 leaves, maybe 3 ft tall) How to attach all that?

Nothing is impossible but I would always recommend starting with a small plant :)

The poles you made in this video, are they still the same size as another video you made…ie 15squares?

Hallo, have anybody problem with mold on moos poles?

Hi Jan. First thing first, I spent few hours to make 8 moss pole yesterday after work and woke up with back pain today. For that I'm little bit angry at you😁. The question is about fertiliser. Since I live in germany, it is quite difficult to get the products you have. So I'm looking for alternatives, but I'm little bit confused as you mentioned foliage focus is "actually not fertiliser but nutirents" How can I tell that which fertiliser is fit for the moss pole? I already own 2 liquid fertiliser. Both are for aroids. one is 'organic' one, which is dark brown color and it's quite thick (of course it supposed to be mixed with water anyway but still.) and the other one is much lighter and transperent almost like water with little greenish hue. The third option i was thinking is using slow realising fertilising sticks (I have one from Substral) stab into the moss pole one or two.. I'm very willing to get something else if you says otherwise, but I need some help here. Anyway thank you so much for sharing your tips always, cheers!

I’d give it a try and see if it works. Trial and error is key. Foliage focus is a liquid mineral plant nutrient rather than an organic fertiliser

I desperately need your help plant man! I’ve had some climbers on spag moss poles but recently noticed a ton of freckle sized black and white mites climbing up and down my poles and around my pots. They are only found on my pole plants, so I assume it’s from them. Have you ever dealt with these before? And if so what did you do? Thanks Jan the plant man!

Hey, I have never experienced that so can't speak from experience. Suppose best would be to try and identify what mites they are first & then research treatment methods.
