How to make a Sky & Sea Handmade Journal. Using stitched Hand Coloured Papers and Ramie Tape.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Louise presents a video that demonstrates how she has gained knowledge and experience, (learned) through the process of making a handmade journal. The great value of this demo is the problems encountered and the mistakes made and rectified in the actual process of learning.
Louise first painted a series of hand-coloured papers and there is a video showing the techniques she used to make ethereal seascape papers.
This video shows how the small Sea & Sky journal was made in order to learn and understand the technique on a small more manageable book, almost as a sketch, before attempting to construct a much more ambitious journal. In this way, if the exercise was a failure there would not be too much waste.
The papers leftover from those needed for the larger journal were used to make a small, sewn, hardback journal. The sheets of paper are put into signatures and sewn, glued and bound. Problems are encountered and resolved in the process so that Louise is able to learn through invaluable practical experience.

It seems all of the decorative papers I make become books of different sized signatures and textures. I just can't help myself. I am enjoying watching you. I also am a printmaker and letterpress artist.

Hi Amy, thank you and glad you like them. I did find out that the cover spine is not actually glued to the signature spine and I am doing a video that shows how it should be done. x

Thank you so much! The cover was a fabric, almost silk like wallpaper painted in irridescent acrylic inks, it was soo luminous when finished, just like the ligh reflected off the sea.

I know that this video is over a year old but still I have to say this: please never glue your spines to a hard cover. Rather bend the outside spine a bit to the outside in the middel, so the book has room to open flat. Nevertheless it turned out really beautifull and I just love the colours and the textures you brought into this!

Hi, thank you for the tip. I have realised that you never glued your signature spine to the cover, an early mistake. Thanks for the helpful information, and hopefully, I will hear from you again. All the very best, Louise X😀

I think you said you used some wallpaper (had video on while doing dishes). From experience I learned regular glues do not work on vinyl wallpaper. If you are using vinyl wallpaper that is not preglued with vinyl adhesive, the glue probably won't hold. I made a bunch of boxes with some beautiful wallpaper samples. Some of them the glue would not hold. With others the glue held at first only to come apart later. Was quite a disappointment

Hi Betty. I've had no trouble sticking down wallpaper. It was never the really thick expensive ones and without the plastic finish. Perhaps just good luck. I will bear it in mind for the future
