Thank you for watching and all the very best.
In this video, Louise teaches you how to make a lovely, beautifully finished concertina art book using abstract painting in acrylics on watercolour paper.
The methods used to paint the abstract in acrylic are on a separate video.
Louise used pre-scored cut and scored cards that you can buy very cheaply from discount stores and inexpensive craft supplies. The card is 130gsm.
The watercolour paper used is 140gsm.
The cards are glued together to make the concertina and then the abstract painting is applied to the concertina and folded over to the outer side to make a lovely finish that is then covered in applied painted wallpaper.
A front and back cover is made from a leftover mount card (a thick card that is glued together to make a double layer) and a toggle/button is fixed to the front cover. Silk yarn is attached to the rear cover so that the book can be fixed closed when not on display.
You will need
6 x 6-inch card stock
PVA glue, the ph neutral bookbinding glue is preferable but others will do.
The bookbinding glue is more expensive but it has properties that make the process easier. It dries flat and it also sticks down quickly. All PVA glue is ph neutral but some have a tendency to become brittle with age and some are more tricky to use as they do not become tacky very quickly and you struggle to stick the papers down.
We would recommend that you make a trial book first using cheaper paper and glue and then invest in good materials. It is really worth the investment as the finished product is a little jewel of a book.
Applicators for the glue
Ruler
Scissors
Bone folder, Louise uses the blunt end of a teaspoon handle and this scores perfectly well, but she has now invested in a bone folder.
Watercolour paper
Acrylics
Thickish card for the cover, this can be glued together in two layers to make it firmer and more durable.
Toggle or button
Durable thread/yarn/ribbon to tie up the book for safekeeping.
Wallpaper or other paper for the outer side of the book,

I’m in the middle of watching this video, and I’m reading comments, and I feel so grateful for your sharing so openly your fine skills. It’s such a joy to see people sharing and allowing them in turn to share what they know. I’m new to modern mixed media, )since last June or July), and I am smitten by what I’ve seen from certain artists. I wish every child in school could learnt this! I wish *I* had learned this in grade school!!! Wow, what wonderful things a child could learn to make for their whole life!!!! Thank you so much for what you’re teaching! This could be taken in so many directions!! Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!

Hi Mar L. So glad that it is helpful. You are right the contemporary mixed media ideas would be wonderful for kids. It provides open-ended probabilities and is brilliant for experimental problem-solving, and that is not even to mention the creative opportunities. I am glad to hear you are investigating this wonderful creative thinking, I am sure your journey will be stimulating and fascinating. Enjoy, and I hope we get a chance to see your work too. You could post work on the Louise Jannetta Create Art Facebook page when you feel ready. I look forward to sharing the journey. All the very best, Louise x

One of my favorite moments in this whole process was when you said (as you were painting the cover) "I want it to be alive, of its own accord. I want it to work because of what it is, not because of what I've done to it". That's such a profound statement about art. Words for an artist to live by, for sure! I've been watching many, many of your videos and then heading to my studio to happily mess around with papers and paint and paste. Thank you. You're my current art hero! :)

Wow, you've taken a concertina book to another level. Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your creativity. I love making these books, but they are not quite as robust as this example. I use colouerd mount board for covers, and do abstract paintings on both sides of the concertina paper/card, then it can be turned over for a different look, just for fun. Thank you for the closure idea, in fact all your ideas.......Alioban x

Louise, that is the most stunning piece I think I have ever seen. This is another example of how artists are so often misunderstood and perhaps at times undervalued. The talent, commitment and effort required to plan, prepare and execute a book of this time is enormous on it’s own. That added with your talent with the painted substrate - the art the concertina is holding (and everything else you shared in your studio - what a treasure trove!!) would be enough to demonstrate the effort that is put into a single piece. I’m rambling here because I’m lost for words. It’s videos like this which make me appreciate the sheer magnitude of work an artist puts in. Thank you for sharing it, the process, the outcome. I’m totally in awe.

Hi again Marg and yes it is a lovely way to display a painting. It becomes so personal and is all about the touch and feel of the thing. It has a very different status to a framed painting on the wall. X😃

Hi Louise, love watching your process and listening to your thoughts as you work. Tell me, did you tap or glue sheets of waterpaper together or is it one long piece of paper? Thanks for sharing.

Hi Katherine, many thanks for watching. I joined cut sheets of watercolor paper together. I think they were painted first and then glued on to the card stock concertina. I joined them at the inside bends to keep the join as invisible as possible. I hope you get the chance to give it a go, enjoy x
