Unique Markmaking with paints, fabrics and collage inspired by the eastern arts of Joomchi Momigami.

Hi and thank you for your interest.
I hope that the process inspires creativity and provokes curiosity.
This demonstration will leave you feeling empowered with the confidence to allow nature and intuition to take their course and gently guide you through your own adaptation of this process, Enjoy!
Louise has been experimenting and learning through process and is delighted to share her findings.
There is an obvious delight in the dialogue between the paint and the substrate used. Louise shows techniques that take great joy in the response, interchange and negotiation between the mediums themselves with humility that suggests that these moments of magic occur of their own accord.
The links to the videos with tutorials on the papermaking process and the experimenting that has led to this point in her practice are listed below.

Hi Debbie, many thanks for watching. I use cellulose paste (the same as wallpaper paste but without chemicals that can damage the papers over time), and I mix it 50/50 with good quality bookbinding glue. Bookbinding glue is generally PVA based, but all the chemicals that damage the papers are removed, hence its expense. The mix of these glues adheres very well and can be reversed with water if it needs to be renovated. It is a glue that is archival.😀

I love all of the different textures. I am headed to my craft room to look for my treasures to use. What do you think about using acetone of magazine pages to smudge the design into colors. I watched a video by Noir Art and she showed a facinating method that I thought might be fun to use in momigami...What do you think? May be worth a play...I just wonder about using it in art where I would want to add photos and keep it forever??

Hi Scrappy Cavie, I am pretty sure that acetone will evaporate and leave very little residue so wouldn't affect the paper in the long term. However a possibility would be to scan the papers and print them on a good printer with good quality photographic inks and then apply your photos. So many of us have good printers now that printing your own papers from scanned collages can offer loads of possibilities.

Sorry I would have to esearch the long term effect of acetone on papers to know if they have archival qualities or not. But the methods would certainly produce some interesting results X

I am thinking of painting or staining tissue paper and then applying konnyaku paste to the tissue in order to momigami it. I would like to make a sun screen in my west facing window with it. Do you think the traditional technique would be the appropriate technique or would oil work with tissue? thanks Louise.

Hi If you are going to invest alot of time and energy I think it would be worth doing it in the mulberry paper. You could pruchase just a little to try it out first. I am just about to start experimenting with the mulberry paper so we can share results. Good Luck

@@LouiseJannetta could I collage bits of mulberry onto a piece of mulberry using the paste as an adhesive and then layer a second piece of mulberry over it , apply paste on both sides and knead as usual? So many questions - this will be my first Momigami project and I am very excited. And YES let's share results!!

@@treemerryweather Hi again, love to see that you are getting excited by all this, I'm loving it all, so tactile and revealing in so many ways. Today I am going to add Konnyaku paste to mulberry paper. This paste has particular attributes that suit the conversion of paper into textile but these attributes may not be the ones we need or want for a particular project. We tend to get overawed by traditional methods when there are so many amazing new products that did not exist or were even inconceivable in the past.

@@treemerryweather One of the things I am considering is Joomching the mulberry papers first, this is just adding water and rubbing the sheets of mulberry together, scrunching and folding until the fibres are felted together to make the two sheets of mulberry into one. These are very fabric-like. And if you purchase the fabulous fine and lacey mulberry papers these can be used to make wonderful translucent areas. This is a fantastic process and will be wonderful to explore. Hope all this helps and have a wonderful time experimenting with it all. X

I was thinking about this again and realised that my obsession with making things that have longevity can get in the way. The quality of the glues and paints now are soo good that I am sure a collage of tissue papers and acrylics would work as a sun screen. Intense sunlight will damage anything so it would probably be best to embrace that and know that you will have to make a replacement in the future. What a lovely problem to have XXXX
