I've been hosting modded servers at home for years and was kinda miffed that I forgot how to host a plain vanilla server, lol This was super helpful, thanks. Only troubleshooting that I had to do was remove the regular java 8 that I had installed then re-install the jdk.

how can i do 1.20.1 i remember once there was a site with the versions of the servers but i cant find it

For anyone who got some sort of a JRI error that mentioned something about a version that was compiled at a newer version and yours is older, what fixed it for me was installing the Java Development Kit for windows which fixed it. Hope this helps someone!

@@Voizdev that's what I thought too, but it didn't work. Maybe because world folders were renamed from 1.18 to 1.19. but I updated them and still didn't work

Great tutorial! I set it up just how you said and it works great; I can connect to it from the host PC just fine. I also set up port forwarding for the correct port, and am trying to get it so that I can connect from my laptop when I'm not home. I'm just not sure what the IP should be, and everything I try doesn't work! It's really weird and I am not sure what the solution is. Any advice would be awesome!

is making a modded server (with mods in the world file) just as simple as putting the mods in the mods folder and hosting the world and it will put the mods for all players playing?

plugins are server side mods that only need to be installed on the server and can be played on a vanilla client. you can use these with spigot and paper. To use conventional mods you need forge or fabric and this usually requires the player to be on a special client with the mods installed as well.

in server.properties there is level-type and it needs to be level-type=flat for a superflat

you would need to use a modified server.jar. for plugins you would want spigot or paper and for mods you would want forge or fabric. I have videos on my channel on forge and paper

when I download the server.jar file thingy, I have a completely different Icon next to it. And then in files, it just says "server" instead of server.jar. I don't know why.

you need to enable file extensions to see the .jar. That's part of the video. also the icon doesn't matter as the batch file will tell the server how to start.

it should be fine as long as you copy over all the files. save the old ones as backups. the important stuff like world and player data is stored inside of the world folders

and if you setup port forwarding or firewall rules you need to make sure those are set for the new laptop

when i open bat it says error, it cant open the server.jar

make sure java is installed and if it is then you may have a PATH environment variable issue. Reinstalling java usually fixes this issue. There are manual ways to solve this as well if you search online.

I download the server.jar file and it shows as a Jar File, and not an Executable Jar File. I made sure I have the java download shown here.

type "stop" in the console to shutdown gracefully and then restart by clicking the batch file. you can write more complex scripts to add auto-restarts

Both me and my friend have created servers, we use "ip:port" and it just doesn't work. It can't find a server of that ip and port combination

you would need to leave the server running on a pc that can be on 24/7. the software has to be running somewhere to have the server be online.

you need to use a modded server .jar file like papermc or spigot

you can replace the server.jar with the spigot.jar or paper.jar and replace the filename in the batch file. once spigot or paper loads the first time it should create a mods/ directory

you can download the server.jar in the launcher in the edit installation menu for any version. you can also get it here mcversions.net/

yes. set the seed in server.properties and then regenerate the world by deleting the old one and restarting the server. it will create a new world using the seed you set.
