How to make a language learning study plan that works | Language Self-study 101

↴ pls open + read me for helpful links and resources 🥺
Figuring out how to create an EFFECTIVE language learning routine took me a while, but after studying about 2-3 languages (one of which I taught myself) and watching a TON of other videos from polyglots on how to learn languages, here's what I believe are the key aspects of a useful study plan. These are the actual things that I take into consideration to create a study routine that works for me.
This is less of a video about the actual process of creating a routine (which is super important, as I stressed that consistency is a key part to learning a language well) -- it's more about the CONTENT of what you learn / how to structure your studying. Hope this helps!

I can speak 15 languages now including Chinese English Malay Korean Japanese Spanish French Italian Portugese German Latin Greek Dutch Swedish and Finnish...languages are all connected to each other...this is actually called second language acquisition...there are 5 hypothesis the Acquisition-Learning hypothesis the Monitor hypothesis the Input hypothesis the Affective Filter hypothesis the Natural Order hypothesis The Acquisition-Learning distinction is the most fundamental of the five hypotheses in Krashen's theory and the most widely known among linguists and language teachers. According to Krashen there are two independent systems of foreign language performance: 'the acquired system' and 'the learned system'. The 'acquired system' or 'acquisition' is the product of a subconscious process very similar to the process children undergo when they acquire their first language. It requires meaningful interaction in the target language - natural communication - in which speakers are concentrated not in the form of their utterances, but in the communicative act. Hope this helps for those who's learning a second language~

Im only halfway done with the video but I got to say the sticking to the one textbook thing makes so much sense! There are so many free resources for Korean (which I have been learning on and off for almost a decade LOL) and because I try to incorporate so many different lessons from various sources, I get SO overwhelmed. Going to definitely minimize the resources I use lol. And I want to learn so many other languages as well but I think sticking to just one or two is better for me because my attention span has dwindled since high school haha. Thank you for these helpful tips!

For listening to songs in your target language I noticed that for japanese if you sing along to the lyric versions of songs with Romaji (as long as you know how to properly pronounce it) it improves listening, since as a beginner (at least for me) I have a hard time identifying specific sounds in Japanese and of course pronunciation too! :)

@@victorialim Haha of course. I just finished watching the other video, 'The absolute best way to learn a language' and I actually learned thanks to this and your video, that what I am doing right now is right! I have always been in search of other recourses that are 'the best', while what I am doing right now works perfectly for what I WANT and CAN do. I am learning Korean right now; learning 10 words a day while doing grammar exercises, watching k-dramas and journaling every day. It's just now that I realised that what I am doing, fits my goals of becoming fluent nowhere soon, but hopefully within a couple of years.

Hi Yasmin, when I first started learning in quarantine (for about 2-3 months), I just learnt on my own, with about 2 classes from italki just to talk to a native speaker. After that, I took Japanese in university as a class (although honestly, I think if I just studied on my own using the minna no nihongo textbook, I would’ve learnt the same amount)! For Spanish, I took classes in university for about 1.5 years but I applied a lot of the things I mentioned in this video (especially comprehensible input and output) to get really good! Hope this helps :)

I am Lithuanian, I know English well enough to watch movies/tv shows without subs and read long books and talk with strangers in the language. I also know a little Russian but can't read long texts or understand everything being said to me. I've been studying Spanish before, but haven't touched it in a while. But my biggest priority right now is to learn Japanese. I have spoken to two native Japanese women once in Lithuania, and it was nice. I can't read Japanese yet, currently learning hiragana and katakana and some simple kanji. I know some vocabulary, and understand most of anime without subs, although I do watch it with English subs as well. I keep a notebook and I am starting with Japanese from Zero, watching videos in Japanese and listening to songs daily. Thank you for this video, Victoria. :)

Woow, hablas muy bien español. Entré a tu video porque estoy aprendiendo inglés y quiero entrenar mi oído en este idioma, pero cuando te escuché en español me sorprendí. Tienes muy lindo acento en estos dos idiomas. Saludos. :)

What ever happened to going to the library , borrow a learning grammer book and learn, watch some youtube videos and get a conversation buddy and guess what- 2 years later one gets to a nice B2 level. Seems like my simple strategy is very effffective. No idea we need all different strategies and complicated scheduling, 10 different book, 100's of advice youtubers lecturing us. Keep it simple follow my lead and don't waste time with 90000 peoples complicated .....
