How to make a good study plan to learn a language effectively ? (Subtitles)

Hello, my dear friends, you are the most important part of this video!
I made this video based on your questions and comments on the community. I hope it can answer your questions and give you inspiration.
There are thousands of ways to learn a language, some of you must feel confused and lost, so this video will guide you to make a simple and well organized plan to start your language learning journey.
The examples in this video are just a way to show you the logic of building a clear plan. I have tried many methods and made different types of plans to study languages, I am creative and flexible to make and change the plans too, it is actually a good way to boost your motivation by doing new exercises and changing the routine.
But the core of all good plans is always-- motivation and discipline.
In this video, I give you 3 steps to make any study plan:
00:00 Intro
01:29 Know your learner profile
02:45 Step 1: setting goals

I've been learning languages for almost two years now, but not effectively. I'll get excited and do too much, burn out, forget stuff, etc. Your video has kind of been a calm reminder to start smaller and work my way up with my languages. All of your tips and guidelines are invaluable to me, thank you!

I have been learning Dutch very irregularly for the past few years but have only ever studied very sporadically with ineffective methods and thus, have only been able to reach an A2 level in the language. In the past few weeks however, I have started dedicating 30 minutes to an hour per day to study, using mainly podcasts, television shows and KZread videos as well as my Dutch dictionary for vocabulary. I try and write 1-2 times per week to my family in the Netherlands via Facebook messenger and am already finding that my language skills are improving. I find that I can understand more than I can speak, so I will need to focus on conversing in the language, in the coming months. By the end of this year, I am hoping to reach an upper B1 level in the language and hopefully by next year I can reach an upper B2 level. My biggest problems have been getting too excited about different languages and study them for a week before getting bored and moving on, as well as being embarrassed to speak the language amongst family for fear of not being understood and of course, using ineffective methods but I am hoping that I am now on track to be speaking proficient Dutch by 16 and German by 19 ( I will major in German and History when I go to university in 2 years time).

*1st step: Research the language* *2nd step: Prepare the tools* 1. A main learning resource (book, website youtube channel) 2. An alphabet book or app 3. An excel table or notebook 4. A spaced repetition app (Anki, Quizlet) 5. A dictionary (with audio and conjugasion feature) *3rd step: Choose a resource* CRITERIAS: 1. With good quality and video 2. Each lesson has a short conversation, grammar points, a word list *4th step: Make a study plan and know when to practice with a native speaker* STUDY PLAN VIDEO: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4dpu5hyppO-Z9Y.html WHEN TO START SPEAKING WITH NATIVES? - When you have a basic structure of the language - At least 100 high frequency words and basic grammar concept (pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, nouns) HOW TO STUDY A LESSON? 1. Listen to the audio 2. Check new words and grammar points 3. Repeat with the audio Add new words to the lesson Ex: Just learned how to say ‘good’, how can i say ‘bad’? Just learned how to say “He is a student”, how can i say it using ‘I’, ‘You’, ‘Us’? - Make simple sentences from the beggining, with the words you learned from the lesson - Insert this sentences in your spaced repetition app (Anki, Quizlet), and review them - Don’t review just the word you want to, but the whole sentence -When you see a new verb, don’t just learn it alone, but learn it’s conjugasion TIP: Make sentences that relate to your daily life HOW TO STUDY GRAMMAR? - Don’t write everything down - Don’t just copy, make phrases on your own

I feel so great watching Chinese shows on Netflix now for example and being able to catch more and more words as my studies progress. So, to everyone on this journey, never give up because consistency pays off! I always look forward to your videos on my KZread feed! 😌

Seeing Zoe do 4 at a time made me feel ok because I thought maybe I'm nuts or something. I'm focusing on them all at various levels and they are all from different language families (except for French and Spanish). I love your videos! You're the only person I have found that is super real about learning languages. Other people on YT are like, "You just have to do it, just spend a lot of time every day, immerse yourself and talk to lots of people in your target language" which is not always possible. I've learned that people have different levels of ability when it comes to how 'easy' it is to learn a language. Some people pick it up easily, some people struggle a lot. I struggle tons, I've failed at 2 languages and I'm currently now working on a completely different language and I'm not going to give up! Good luck everyone (:

This video couldn't have come at a better time. I've been scouring the internet for good language learning material and busy drawing up a study plan. I've already been immersing myself mostly in Spanish to get back to the level I was previously and more, but I need to structure that and all the other bits and pieces I'm learning. I just love languages and you and Steve Kauffman, Olly RIchards, and various other polyglots have really inspired me to learn all my languages properly. This time I'm enjoying it so much more as I'm not delving into loads of grammar and verb conjugations etc. I'm just enjoying it so much, mostly listening at the moment and following some of Olly and Steve's recommendations. I'm learning so much more so fast and even watched a movie in Spanish the other night with no subtitles. I was able to understand quite a lot. This is way more fun!

Zoe, thanks so much for this video. A light bulb went off in my head as I've been wandering aimlessly in my language study for about a year. Your video made me realize I'm not applying any of the goal setting and time management skills I used to earn my Master's and PhD. There was no school establishing a structure and timeline for my language learning and I didn't bother creating one of my own. This video made me realize why I've been lost and not really making progress. If you don't know where you are going, and you don't have a plan on how to get there, it's easy to get lost. The journey then becomes more of wandering around in a maze rather than traveling down a highway to a destination.

Thank you for sharing this video! It can be honestly overwhelming to learn a new language from scratch and I appreciate the honest insights that you have shared in this video. As someone who likes learning to be more or less structured, I love how you went over general guidelines to keep in mind when creating a language study plan and shared your own personal examples. Just subscribed! ^^

Thank you so much! My goal is to be able to speak/ have conversations in French. I am not new to the language. When I attempt to say, the sentences sound better in my head. I feel now I have an idea of where to start to reach my goal.

You’re absolutely right, vision is KEY! If you don’t have a vision before you start learning you could end up wasting a lot of time and resources.

Thank you Zoe for this helpful video. I am American-Palestinian. I have been living in France for 4 years now and I still have a lot of difficulty because I don't really like the language to being with, but my kids and husband all speak it. I don't like to speak in public because I make too many mistakes. I keep making the same mistakes and I just get discouraged, especially around family members, so I don't want to sound stupid. I want to speak French fluently because I have the privilege of living in the country and because I would like to become a French citizen since my husband and children are. I will definitely watch more of your videos!

Hey I want to say thank you so much for your guidance 🙇🏻‍♀️🙏🏻 I just finished making my goals following the directions in this video. Onto the next steps would be implementing and maintaining them and for me usually are the hardest steps in my language learning journey. Would very much appreciate if you can give some advice on those topics such as how to build strong work ethic, and etc. Then again very nice video, keep going!

I really like your video, Zoe! =) I like to start learning languages because it's so itneresting in the beginning and most of the time I can learn the beginner's level quite easily. But after that I get into trouble. I'm German and also fluent in English, so these two are fine. I forgot most of what I learned in school about Latin and French though. And I studied Japanese in University and even studied in Japan for a year but my mind was pre-occupied with other things during the pandemic, so I didn't study anymore and my level dropped. I'd like to take the JLPT N2 test at some point though and your video really motivated me to finally make a plan! :D
