The key to learning a language is to take a lot of small steps and to be consistent. It's also important to have reasonable expectations and not to compare yourself to other speakers. If you're just starting out and already trying to "sound like a native", you will most likely lose confidence and motivation. Make a record of your progress and feel good about how far you have come. Language is a tool for communication and not a science.

It worked for me...I talk about wanting to sound as a native from the start. I was really mad at myself because I couldn't sound like a native in English and it gave me the motivation to work on it. So now...I can proudly say that I sound like a native

One thing to remember: Be patient with your progression, not everyone learns a language at the same pace, and most important, enjoy the experience!

I am native Arabic, know Turkish and English, while I am trying to study Persian and Norwegian at the same time. You are totally right on the huge similarities between Turkish and Persian. Actually Arabic, Persian and Turkish have well amounts of common words. However be aware of the same words different meaning, they are the hardest. Love from Türkiye 🇹🇷

Actually when you can speak French , English is easier to learn. And when you can speak both English and French ,Spanish is easier to learn. If you can speak Spanish, Italian and Portuguese become easier.

As someone who grew up with multiple languages and cultures, understanding more than one language is a bit of a norm for me, but I do really want to be fluent in all of them. I natively speak English, speak a fair amount of Portuguese, and understand a lot of Persain. French and Arabic are also on my list to learn the basics of some day, and your videos truly inspire to keep at it and not give up, so thank you for that! :)

Having different priority levels for the languages is great advice! I'm thinking of starting to learn another language as my Greek learning feels like it's stagnating and probably just needs to improve through simple usage, but I wasn't sure how I could combine another language when I don't have that much time. But I can just make Greek a language I acquire passively through just using it, while the new one I will be my priority for as long as I still need to learn its basics. Now to find a language I'm enthusiastic to learn

I have to come back to you everytime now that I lost in language learning. My progress really slow and it‘s like fall through one after another. Well consistency is the prominent keys here. Wish me luck!

Train it from the start, don’t wait! You see something and test yourself how to say in the target language like "an apple" then a short sentence like "little red apple" then a longer sentence like "I want to eat a red apple this evening", keep doing it and you will get used to thinking in this language

@@zoe.languages Hola, Zoe. Me había dado curiosidad de cuánto tiempo podría haberte tomado aprender todos estos idiomas. Te voy a dar un dato interesante. Yo soy hablante nativo de español y realmente nunca he necesitado aprender italiano o portugués para comunicarme con hablantes de estos dos idiomas. PAra mí son, de hecho, el mismo idioma. Si alguna vez te plantearas aprender español, italiano o portugués, te puedo asegurar que con aprender español es más que suficiente. Los hablantes de portugués entienden prácticamente el 100% de lo que decimos (los hispanos/españoles), mientras que los italianos sobre el 85-90%. Por el contrario, nosotros entendemos sobre un 70% de estos otros idiomas debido a que su pronunciación es mucho más complicada y tienen más sonidos, pero esto no es una preocupación para los hablantes nativos, porque se soluciona acostumbrándose al oído a sonidos que no son muy familiares para nosotros. This was such a lovely video! I have been struggling to decide on one language to learn ( which is why I’ve debated learning two 😂) I started language learning again this year mainly because my mental health hasn’t been great ( and language learning has always been something that makes me happy and is my version of self care). Currently I’m learning Chinese, and I’m trying to pick maybe one other language to learn as a secondary ( French, Spanish, Dutch, Vietnamese, Czech, Turkish, Polish,ASL, Russian, Danish, Norwegian). My goal right now is to have more of a focus and routine ( like watching more tv in my target language) and also not being too hard on myself when I have bad mental health days and my study changes. You are such an inspiration !!! Some people are good in languages just like some people are good in maths. I am unfortunately not very talented while learning languages. However in India we are all bilingual or trilingual as in school I learned Punjabi, Hindi and English. My first “foreign “ language I attempted to learn was French. I tried several times to enrol in Alliance Français, but I could never understand or keep up with the pace. The second language I tried to learn was Russian. I did 2 semesters in the Russian Cultural centre, and I failed the second semester. Then I tried to enrol in a Mandarin course. I could not keep up with it. Three more times I tried to learn Mandarin through Italki, but I could never get the tones correct. The fourth course I tried to do was Farsi. I really like the language and trying to learn it. This year I have started learning Arabic and Spanish. This has been my language learning journey during the last 3 decades. I’m a retired person, who just loves to travel. So I have decided to become more serious learning all the 6 languages. Even though I am retired, I have elderly parents to look after, and struggle with doing more than 3 to 4 languages a day. I don’t have much of an issue to mix my languages as the languages sounds are very different. Despite the huge amounts of failure which I have had, I have a very high degree of optimism for the future. The common wisdom is to go after one or two languages. However If I was doing just one language I would probably give it 2 times the time, and certainly not 6 times. Just a general comment I want to make on what one sees in KZread for Language Learning. You only see success stories and some people might start getting their expectations very high, which in the long run may see them abandoning the language, when the reality is different from the expectations. I find writing almost everyday in a journal in a foreign language really helps, especially if you combine that with the help of the internet and listen to and repeat the vocabulary and the sentences regularly.🥰

Hi Zoe. In this video you mentioned an issue you faced which was losing motivation for the "old" language, in your case German. You mentioned feeling more motivation for newer languages as you felt like you were making more progress which made it more enjoyable. This is a very similar issue as what I am facing at the moment. Over the course of my high school and university years (I have just graduated with my Bachelors), I studied Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, and Spanish quite seriously, and have reached what I would consider either a middle or upper-intermediate level in all of these languages. In other words, though, now ALL my languages are "old" languages to me, as I have been studying them all for a considerable time, and I find myself struggling a lot. Last year I experienced the death of a family member, and it completely threw me off my language-learning routine. Now, I find myself completely unmotivated to study any of my languages, and I struggle to work out what sort of things I can do in order to study. For Spanish, I am able to engage with native-level materials, which is quite enjoyable for me. However, for Chinese and Japanese, I'm not yet at the level where I can engage with native-level materials that I actually enjoy, but I'm also at a stage where the study techniques that once worked for me when I was a beginner are no longer effective. Do you have any recommendations in regards to: 1) How to get back into learning "old" languages when you are feeling very unmotivated? 2) Study techniques that would be appropriate and effective for someone at a middle/upper-intermediate level? I feel that I have been studying these languages for so long that the spark is gone, so to speak, and I've also lost my initial momentum. I would really appreciate it if you responded to this comment, or even made a video addressing this topic. If you already have a video addressing this, then I apologise (I am new to your channel so although I have checked your previous videos, I may have simply missed it), and I would appreciate it if someone could direct me to that video. I also have one last question. Have you uploaded any of your videos anywhere on Chinese social media? Hello Annie, thank you for this message. To pick up an “old” language and try to find the motivation again, what I have tried was to make it “attractive” again. So rather than picking them up with "boring" books, just try talking with a native speaker (language exchange for example), watch the videos or read the books with the content you are interested in. since you have upper intermediate level, these exercises will be easy, just make them enjoyable, then step by step add a daily study routine, vocabulary grammar, etc., my advice is to start a study habit small and grow. I hope it will be useful! By the way, I haven't uploaded any videos on the Chinese platform, maybe I will in the future.

Congrats on your efforts :) I'm currently trying to learn Russian through Japanese, and even though my Japanese is much more advanced than my Russian, I still find a few words slipping through, haha. I think you just have to laugh about it when it happens. I try to enjoy the struggles, as it's all part of the process. These are great tips that we have found to be helpful for ourselves! The traditional Grammar-Translation Method is not the best way; you definitely need to surround yourself with the target language as much as possible and take notes in another language. Consistency of natural acquisition, reinforcement of structured learning, and continuing refinement of other learned languages by using them to study the current target language. Brilliant and effective!

I'm just 4 minutes into the video and I can state that I admire and totally share your way of thinking about language learning & learning several languages simultaneously. I'm Italian and I'm currently on exchange year in Norway, thus working on my Norwegian and always perfecting my English. As I've gotten here I met several Latin-Americans, fact that awakened my will to start learning Spanish again, which I had studied it in the past for a little while, so I began to practice Spanish in addition to Norwegian and English. Recently, my guts feeling is telling me to start learning Dutch, as it intrigues me as a language. I’m 19 years old. From elementary school, I always fancied the idea of learning Spanish, but always waited for a mentor to do so. Last April, by entering university and seeing how different the environment is, I finally decided to take matters into my own hands, and started teaching it myself! Thing is, that after just a year of learning Spanish, I met foreigners from other countries and before I knew it, I had started learning languages from left to right. However, as you know and pointed out, this is a significantly bad idea, because you start mixing the languages with one another. I was so excited at first, but quickly got overwhelmed, and decided to take a step back and stick to only 2 languages for the time being (Spanish and Norwegian). That way I can organise my time better as well. Mostly everyone told me that learning multiple languages at once is impossible, but watching your content has majorly helped me to keep going, no matter what the other said! Thank you, Zoe. When we were at school, we learned two or three languages. I am learning Italian, started to listen to QVC Italian. Also I have Italian lessons at college. I learned French and very little Spanish at school. So I have started to organise myself. Learn Italian in the morning, in the afternoon, Spanish and French. I am doing passive learning. While am doing something else, listen to the language, once I become proficient, I will learn, German and Swedish. Swedish as I was planning to move there.

It really needs a whole video to talk about this topic🤣

I speak Portuguese as the official language of the country and I speak English as foreign language I learned a bit at a particular English school and also speak Shangaan as my native language. So I speak three languages so far. Now I need Spanish. I am learning it online from my WhatsApp friends who speak Spanish and I also use KZread, but sometimes I lazy to carry on with Spanish, because of the occupations. I have been busy. Seven languages, you are a hardworking person

Hi Zoe! This video is so helpful and very apt for language learning. I’m from Singapore and we are bilingual since young. Our first language is English and im Chinese so my second language is Chinese. I have been learning Thai for 5 years now and I realise Chinese language helps me in learning Thai as well due to the tonal nature of both languages. And Thai has some similarities with Chinese dialect Teochew dialect as well. Like what you mentioned, we can find similarities in languages connecting those dots and slowly learning day by day. We can do simple exercises for eg when we see an object. we can test ourselves on what the object is in different languages. Setting goals and objectives really motivates ourselves in learning more on languages.

Alas, there is no chance to speak English with others in China. As a result, I am now a graduate student, but my oral English is still very poor.

Actually Turkish and Persian are not similar due to belonging to different language families but they have many common/similar words because of historical exchanges throughout centuries living in the same or neigboring geographies. But take note that sometimes meanings of these similar sounding words may not always be the same.

I completely understand when you said that you mixed Turkish and Persian. Same happened to me with Spanish and Italian, even though I studied Italian in high school for 4 years, but as a child I watched series in Mexican Spanish and my listening skills are that I understand 80% for sure, and when I started learning Italian I was so much struggling because there so many similar words, for example bueno and buono. Then I took a course of Spanish and it was easy to learn when I knew the language so much already. I should consider learning Spanish properly and improving Italian. 😁 And I use English as a support language when learning other language, I don't think in my mother tongues when learning new language. Maybe because the grammars are too way complicated, and because I want to improve English too.

As an Italian, my silly tip is to consider how a word ends. Italian words always need a vowel, Spanish ones not as much. To Take : tomar / prendere Three: tres / tre To speak: hablar /parlare. Maybe it helps, i don't know🤷🏼‍♀️😄 Good luck with your studies

Wow! You are an inspiration! I speak 3 languages and trying to get the 4th. I'm learning german right now and got until B1 but suddenly I just lost motivation and momentum but I want to go back and put the energy and effort, I don't want to lose the time and money I have already invested on it. Your video has given me the motivation to get back to it!

Hi! Thanks so much for this video!! I've learnt English since I was a child, but still struggle with a lack of confidence while speaking and writing in this language. I can't prevent myself from checking on the internet if I use the right word, even though in most cases, I do. I feel like I make mistakes all the time, even in the most basic sentences. I'm just helpless. I don't think the reason is my language level, because I don't have such a problem with German and Italian. The more I study, the lower self-esteem I have.

I'd love to see a video where you talk about what you do to revise/maintain a language! I'm currently studying Chinese and Japanese at a tertiary education provider, but because of the way the provider structures its courses, I spend around 4 months of the year not touching one of the languages at all, and I never really learnt how one revises a language during off periods like this because this is the first time I'm learning in such an environment with such large breaks. What would you personally recommend? Watching media in Chinese and Japanese + revising how to write hanzi/kanji and its pronounciations? Thank you so much, and thank you for your videos!

I'm a native Swedish speaker, and I studying on English and Japanese at the same time!! And I really want to learn Mandarin on day the language feels like such a beautiful language to learn!! And I enjoy to pratice on new languages it's my new hobby! Anyway thanks Zoe for this video it's very helpful and give me motivation to never give up to learn a new language!!

I'm from Brazil and I'm studying German and Japonese( Despite my German is far better than my Japonese for now lol). Nevertheless I'm truly thiking about starting to learn Swedish, maybe because it will open a lot of oportunities around Nordic countries and also because I really enjoy that culture and I would like to meet it closely. So what I would like to ask is.. Do you think is it possible to learn these three languages at once? Considering that my German is closer to intermediary and I already speak english

I love the way you learn, more specifically your method. I'm indonesian, i speak english, spanish and learning portuguese as i'm living in Porto. I totally understand this difficulty. Thank you! While there are a handnful of languages I'm interested in I've pretty much decided to narrow it down to mainly german and Spanish for now. German has been the priority for quite some time but living in south Florida I come into contact with Spanish speakers just as often as English speakers if not more often. (Granted they usually speak English anyway) but its really given me motivation to study Spanish more. Honestly I just find it difficult to balance even two so the fact that you balance 6 is very impressive and gives me hope! But I'm definitely going to use a 30 minute for Spanish as my secondary language every day. I think thats a great idea. Thanks and best of luck with your studies!!

This was a really helpful video, especially the parts about mixing languages and how you handled feeling overwhelmed. I have a list of languages I'm interested in learning (or re-learning after not using for many years, in the case of French) and I was worried about becoming overwhelmed. I had made a plan the other day to add 1 hour of French 3 times a week to the 5~7 hours a week of Ukrainian I'm already doing, so I'll try out your tip to study one in the morning and the other in the evening. Now I just need to increase my discipline to actually study at the hours I plan to study. 😅

It is the first time I see someone like to learn Persian and I am so glad to see your video, Persian is my native language and I think it can a bit hard for people all around the globe to learn it due to our pronunciation being a little bit different with words we write. On the other hand, different people in the various area maybe pronounce words differently or People of different ethnicities use words with different meanings. I hope you do well with your learning. and I hope I can learn Chinese one day.
