OH MY!! I met a German girl in 1974, when we were starting high school. Her family had just arrived from Germany about 8 months earlier. I have never forgotten her (as a friend to me, a female teenager) her mom serving me a side dish of this. It was so very delicious. But, when I would try to recreate that dish, something was definitely missing. Now, thanks to you, I know exactly what I had forgotten to add. DILL!! Yes!! Paper thin cucumber slices also was something I had never seen, or, eaten. Thank you for putting a happy ending to a long search for that German recipe. 🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒

I’m Cliff, and my mom was German too, and she used to make this for us. I loved it, but I never got to watch her make it, and whenever I asked her how she made it she always said” with a little of this and a little of that”! She would NEVER tell me how she made it! I’ve tried experimenting with this, but I am SO glad you posted this! I’m gonna try your way, it looks amazing!

Where do you get the special sauerkraut and the sausages and how do you cook them. My granddaughter has a strong German heritage on her fathers side but he’s not in the picture. My granddaughter loves German food. She is crazy about dill pickles, she won’t eat sweet, she loves sausage and pretzels and she loves brown bread and she eats just raw cucumbers all the time.

@@mztwixed You seem like a lovely free spirit that appreciates where you came from and the effort it took to get you here. I see you with flowers in your hair. Looking forward to your vid. Screen shots would be great. I love the lore that goes with old family recipes. I started a family cookbook myself. I write the recipes as I go and include either the history of the recipe or why I'm doing that recipe. The histories include who made it and what I remember about that person. When I write the why, I include who was present, where we ate it and what were some of the antics of the day. It's so easy to forget what was going on as time goes by. As it is, I enjoy reading the recipe stories.

I always wondered why my mom's raita beat everyone else's raita. It's because it's German Cucumber salad, apparently. We do use sour cream or greek yogurt, and keep it thick and relatively solid. We might add tomato, switch it up with a red onion. Cilantro instead of dill. We don't use vinegar, but now... I think the next time I make it I will toss in a dash. Thanks for sharing, I love your recipe!

Excellent! Some suggestions Mix most of the dill in the cream and let it sit, for a few hours it infuses the flavor. Use the rest to garnish the salad. Cut the cucumber lengthwise and scoop out seeds with a spoon.that cuts down on the leaching moisture. Soak the onions in cold water then drain them and pat dry. They will become mild and won't compete with a flavor of a cucumbers and Dill. You can also use shallots in place of onions. Very mild and tasty. If you're adding tomatoes cut them in half and scoop out the seeds because they'll leech a lot of liquid and you will have cucumber soup rather than a delicious salad.

For the Ranch dressing, I use the Kraft Hidden Valley, whatever is on sale for the Zesty Italian, and Duke's for the mayo. The dill is from the garden....it has to be fresh, using dried won't work. You can substitute very finely diced dill pickle in a pinch. Enjoy.

One suggestion. I make this too but the recipe I have has you salting the cucumbers in layers then putting a plate on top them in then bowl so you can press down on the cucumbers to press the liquid that comes out of cucumber and putting a can of something on top to press down on the plate that is on top of the onions. I don’t remember how long you’re supposed to express the liquid this way but I would say about an hour. Then after that pour off the liquid that comes out of the cucumbers. Then continue adding the rest of the ingredients. I also would add pepper. It gives the salad a little punch.

Lindylolly Kn - almost my family’s recipe to the “T”. Our layers are thick layer of paper thin slices cucumber, a thin layer of paper thin slices of onion, good sprinkle of salt - repeated till bowl is full. Saucer and weight - leave for as long as you like, a minimum of an hour, we used to leave it for a few hours. Then squeeze the liquid out in small amounts between your hands. Mix in yoghurt, maybe a bit of salt, and lots of black pepper. Done - except, if you leave it sit on the counter for a few hours it will blend the flavours. It will also improve in taste while stored in the fridge for a few days. Thanks for sharing your version of this seemingly international salad. 👵🏻🐾💕🇨🇦

Cut the Cucumber length wise! Scoop out the seeds with a spoon! Cut the Cucumber as in the vid. Salt and mix and let them drain in a strainer! You'll avoids turning a salad into a soup. Chop up 1/2 the dill and mix it into the sour cream and let it sit for a while. then mix the rest into the salad as a garnish.

Such a great salad. I always leave my cucumber seeds in. A seed is by definition filled with nutrients. They are nature's mini powerhouses. The impact on taste and texture is minimal. Sometimes I'll make the dressing half yogurt and half sour cream to add some good bacteria.

Also, with a good home grown or fresh organic bought vegetable its natural, living liquid has amazing health benefits. Interesting....I was born and raised in Germany as well, Bavaria to be exact. We always made our cucumber salad just like yours except I have never heard of using sour cream! We used a small can of Büchsenmilch ....evaporated milk. I still make this all the time, with evaporated milk, it's delicious that way. And the dill is definitely essential to make it a REAL German Cucumber Salad!

Hi :) You know, it could be regional thing! You should definitely try it, just for the experience. For me, it is a taste of childhood. Also, when I was growing up, my family did not have much money, my parents were raising 3 daughters on the salary of a Protestant Lutheran minister....so maybe the condensed milk was cheaper than sour cream. Have a great day!

almost my great grandmothers Wagner recipe from Lunenberg NS. Dates back to the 1880s I think. There is a step where I add salt to the sliced cukes and press in a colandar for a few hours under an iron or other heavey weight. this step remove water from the cukes. The mandolin used is perfect and I use this model lots of time. I still make this to salad today. really great on baked potatoes. If the humiditiy is too high the cream may not sour, but go on anyway, the result will still be wonderful

Ann-Maria - thanks for the comments. Yes, my mom used to salt and then "de-water" the cukes when she had time. Often I saw she was making it and told her to skip that part so I could eat them sooner! :) I could see about them being great on potatoes. Matter of fact, thinking about it, when we had both the cucumber salad and potato salad, I would mix them together a little. Thanks for watching!
