Grateful for everyday living on the mountaintop in our transformed log/farmhouse. We offer food from scratch, handmade DIY, old-timey skills, and simple living for 2!
We still love to do everything we did when we had a larger family, only in smaller portions. We love to cook, bake (even on a wood stove), make DIY projects including sewing, weaving, and home renovations, and enjoy everyday living in our log/farmhouse on the mountain ridge!
We still practice old-timey skills that we introduced to our children as they were growing up and homeschooled almost 3 decades ago.
Some of these skills that we, as empty-nesters, are still using: soap making with lye, hand-dipping beeswax candles, dyeing textiles, rendering beef fat into tallow, canning, dehydrating, and preserving foods, hand-hewing logs, making homemade natural cleaners, bath soaps, and more.

00:00 Introduction to making an olla
00:09 Use a putty knife to remove burrs from the clay pot
00:19 Use fine sandpaper to smooth the clay pot's hole
00:29 Pre-Align and mark where the two clay pots will be joined when glued
00:43 Silicone around one clay pot top, clear silicone is best
01:10 Align the marks by placing one clay pot on top of the other clay pot
01:46 Add a generous bead of silicone around the 2 joined pots
02:21 Apply several rounds of silicone and smooth with a finger
02:53 Add a plexiglass square to use as a plug and silicone the plexiglass on all edges
03:16 Place the plexiglass bead over the hole in the top clay pot
03:29 Add a piece of wax paper and a brick on top of the plexiglass square for 24 hours
03:53 Test for leaks and place in the garden and add a top to keep bugs out
04:04 Place in a large hole up to the top of the clay pot
04:15 Fill with water and enjoy

Never heard of an Oya/Ollas until I saw this video. I live in Seattle...although we are known to get a lot of rain, we do get dry spells in the summer. We recently had out of control fires and people lost power and had to evacuate their homes. Under control now but you can see the damage in various areas. I really think you did an awesome job on your first video and you are very inspirational. I’ve made one video with my grandsons on how to make a fairy garden house...they were checking it everyday for comments and like...we got a few but I don’t know how to do good videos. I am more of a doer and get it done than a teacher.....you are a teacher!!!!

Here is a huge virtual hug for all the kind comments, they are very motivational. Sometimes I wonder if they add value until I see how sweet your comments are. Thank you so much. I pray the fires get under control, I know CA is having issues too. I am learning this whole video thing on my own, guess I am "winging it" as I go lol. I do know one thing, you can make a great video but unless KZread pushes it out, no one see it, the more interaction comments and shares the more they push it out. Kind of like an oxi-moron. LOL Thank you again :)😍

Try pushing the caulk bead with the tip, instead of trying to pull it.

Thank you so much. ❤️ It was my very first video and I know now it could have been better. Just last week someone was saying the music was Indian war music that she didn’t approve. I meant no disrespect to anyone. I live on a mountain and found it appropriate. The music is from the KZread library. Anyhoo, thank you for the kind words. I live in TN and fill it once a week. Less if we get a lot of rain and the soil is wet. More if we have a dry spell. The plants near them do so much better than without one. I used to live in FL, I remember it oh so well. 😊 thank you again, you made my day.

I will be doing a "primitive" playlist very soon, I usually sew more in the fall and winter when it's cooler. Thank you for the suggestion.

when i test pots like that, plugging up the hole and putting water in a pot, i can see that after a while, the pot has changed color on the outside. It looks 'damp' but i don't see any water-drops or something... So, i'm wondering is this'll work. The pots are terracotta and are unglazed. Is this normal and is this the case with your pots too ?

  • @FarmhouseBC

    @FarmhouseBC

Yes, my pots are unglazed so the water is able to seep through the terracotta to moisten the ground. This does cause the pots to change to a darker color. I appreciate your question, and I hope this information is beneficial to you. Thank you so much for watching, and I will leave the link below to my gardening posts on my blog if you're interested in checking those out! farmhouse-bc.com/homesteading-101/gardening/

It doesn't need water drops. The roots of the plants find the olla and attach to and around the olla. Plants always have a water source with an olla.

I think I would put a PVC “spout” on the top to make sure it doesn’t get dirt into it. ?
