How To Make A Dirt Hole Set | Predator Trapping

Ойын-сауық

A dirt hole set is one of the most commonly used methods in trapping. In this video we show you step by step, how and why dirt hole sets are so effective for trapping coyotes, bobcats, or any other predators. We go over the basics so that even beginner trappers will feel confident enough to get out in the woods and start catching predators. We also give some tips and tricks that even a veteran trapper could learn from.

    I tried coyote trapping about 20 years ago. They kept digging up my traps. I threw in the towel admitting they were smarter than me. I pulled out my traps a couple weeks ago which were rusted and several had to be thrown out. I got the rest back in shape and am going to try again. They did not have KZread back then to tell me what I was doing wrong. This time I am going to give them hell ! Hopefully !

    Probably have some bait scent on the trap. Use different gloves handling trap and bait. Also set all your traps, then add the bait.

    Make sure you boil away any oil, then use unscented wax to protect and lube it. Don’t get bait scent on your trap- agree: use gloves for baiting.

    great info. my 1st season, took me a month to finally catch 1! I've had several "escapees" and a few dig ups. You're right about bedding, it's tough. liked the tip about using the swivel to stabilize, gonna try that. I'm a little frustrated with offset jaws(#3 traps). dont seem to hold them. they usually come off right after trap fires. you've got my subscribe!

    On hole sets,.isn't good idea to put trap 3" left or right of center of the hole? That way when coyote legs are spread trap won't be center where he's not stepping? Or having the big hole then a smaller hole left or right with scent so they work different angles?

  • @Whitetail_Properties

    @Whitetail_Properties

    Typically when they approach a dirt hole they will step centered with their bodies with one foot about 8 inches from the hole so they can smell it.

But, Tom did check the sets after we left and both were successful! The addition of the lambs wool and the wax dirt certainly helped beat the elements. Up next will be how to set a pipe dream set. Which was also a very informative how-to video! Hopefully you found this video useful and thanks for watching!

    Being it's for coyotes ,,,is your trap set to close to the hole ,,,.why not bring it out about 16" from the hole to May be get them by the back of front leg ,,,,

  • @Whitetail_Properties

    @Whitetail_Properties

    Жыл бұрын

    You want to catch them by the front leg. Usually 6-8 inches off the hole is about the right distance for the coyote when he puts his nose to the hole to smell it.

    You are never going to have hands or gloves that are totally scent free to where a coyote can not smell that you have been there.The fact that you are there you are leaving scent.

  • @timothyrothrock4173

    @timothyrothrock4173

    I use gloves when it is cold out. Otherwise I will use my bare hands to make a set. But I never bait or lure with gloves on. You can't hide the fact you were there. I typically use at 2 different gland lures to hold the interest. Beaver and bobcat are my favorite. Long range call skunky of course. Every time it rains hard I freshen up the scents. Learning animal behaviors is the key to success and trail cams on your sets helped by far.
