    Okay I never make comments but this (and the 'How to transport a mattress safely on top of any car or suv') video deserves it! Saved me a bunch of $$$ as I was about to rent a cargo van. I bought the same straps from Harbor Freight, strapped down my queen Casper mattress onto my Honda Fit, and successfully drove it from the Bay Area to Orange County. I used 4 ratchet straps just to be extra secure and put all 4 through the car doors rather than the window. I did not use any cardboard to make it rigid and it did just fine - though, it did seem to create a 'hump' at the front due to the sides being more tense/squished down than the middle while driving against the pressure of the wind. The mattress felt very secure, and at some points I had forgotten I had a mattress on my roof and was pushing 80mph, though on average going about 70-75mph the whole way. Excellent video!

    I just drove from Dallas to Phoenix going average 65-75 mph with a full size mattress. I had no issues driving other than the tear resistant mattress bag I got from amazon got destroyed. The cardboard under the straps got chewed up as well by the wind but it helped having it under the wratcheting handle. Overall just like he said, I was able to safely transport my mattress thanks to this video! Thank you Sleepy Sal!!!!

    I want to give away my mattress before moving next month (it's too soft for me) but as backup plan I wondered how I could strap a mattress on the roof without breaking the plastic wind diverters coming down over the windows on my vehicle. Duh, just open the door and put the straps inside the door frame instead of through the windows! Perfect, thanks for explicitly mentioning this. God the most obvious solutions can evade us when it's not something we've done before.

    This was super helpful - thank you! Just bought ratchet straps now. based on your advice! Also, in case anyone's wondering where to get mattress bags - I checked at my local hardware/automotive store and they didn't really have anything suitable. Their tarps weren't wonderful and they were really expensive. So I went to a furniture store where they sell mattresses and asked their customer service desk if they would sell me a plain plastic mattress bag - they were happy to do so, for $10! for a Queen size one (Not bad considering the tarps I was looking at were way more expensive than that.)

    Hi Sal. I can get some still boxed 28-foot heavy duty ratchet straps cheap to move a bed this Sunday, 1/1/20. Since you said only 15-foot long straps are needed to go around a queen mattress & box spring, would I just be able to double wrap the 28-foot ones around my full mattress? I won’t have a box spring with it. Tks

    My SUV (a Toyota RAV4) has a top rack :/ i just want to strap the spring mattress last time i tried moving a mattress it kept lifting off when driving over 35 mph plus the straps kept making lots of noise, what could i have done wrong? I strapped the mattress just around the rack, would it be better through the window? Use a wood/cardboard piece to go both over and under the mattress? Any video on how to do so on a SUV with roof rack? Also... this is to move a mattress going on Highway for about 250 miles... thanks for the instructional video :D

    @@EvanGlobe Bad idea to strap to top racks. I did that and lost a mattress on the freeway. Those racks aren't made for sustaining the loads generated by a mattress at freeway speeds. In my case, it ripped the racks off the car. This was way back in the 90's but racks haven't changed.

  • @SleepySal

    @SleepySal

    Жыл бұрын

    The cardboard at the leading edge of the mattress is to help keep the mattress pressed down and flat. With straps alone, the wind pressure can get under the mattress and bend it back over the straps and flippingin the wind. If that happens, you will get pulled over by police and ticketed for having an unsecured load.

  • @SleepySal

    @SleepySal

    Жыл бұрын

    Put a large stiff cardboard over the entire mattress before strapping it down. The cardboard will keep the mattress from lifting in the wind. If your mattress is a memory foam mattress, you can simply fold it in half, tape, or tie it up, then put it inside your vehicle.

  • @SleepySal

    Yes but I feel like the ratchet straps are more secure. The strapping is wound around and is more secure than just a spring loaded cam with a friction grip on one thickness of straping just doesn't give me as much comfort at the ratchet straps.

    I have tried 100s of different ratchet straps through the years. I have found straps that are much worse and many that are much better. These straps used in this video are in fact decent straps for the money. If kept from rusting and used properly they can last for many repeated uses and will not fail. I have used these particular straps at least 1000 times without having a single failure.
