Great video. The level of care in getting the pattern straight really hit home with me. I would have never thought to use a straight edge! I will now though! Was there a follow up to this video? Where was this used?

Hi sorry, first love from the UK. I have a question about using carbon fibre as a hull of a narrowboat for the British canals and water ways. Could I use carbon fibre as a hull which not only needs to take hits from other boats but also from rocks and shopping trolleys under the water line. Sorry for my question I just looking for other options other then steel or aluminium as a hull. Not only do narrowboat have to be blacked every 3 years but the proof steel is so high right now. Plus I would love a narrowboat home as unique as myself. Thank you for your time 😘

All of the videos I watch about carbon fiber and only a few show people wearing gloves. Maybe things have changed since I went through advanced composites? We were taught to always wear cotton gloves when handling or touching it and latex or nitrile when laying it up. The explanation behind this was the oils in your hands, along with any other contaminations will lead to delamns because improper bonding will occur. Of course this is more important when you have air flow exceeding the sound barrier but it was a requirement and they stressed the hell out of it. Fiberglass not so much but its still a best practice to use gloves, and new ones each and every time you work with it.

Your correct the oils in your skin can cause problems. The carbon give the strength not the resin, the resins job it to hold the carbon in place I don't mean that in a macro way but in a micro way. A dry layup is bad not good and a wet layup is bad not good. The carbon needs to be completely wetted out each and every fiber encased in resin without leaving excess resin behind structural or not. In my opinion If you want a glossy finish use a clear coat paint.

Im doing a layup on a mould thats an overfender for a car and has wide flares. What recommendations could you give me on that? Prior to layup, ill be spraying a UV clear in the mould the night before. Looks is the most important feature on this part, but it will get additional reinforcements.

@@YachtShopCreations im still working on dialing out the layup. I tried the layup with a watery epoxy, and it didnt come out too great, as I also could of let tack a bit more. But now ill be using west systems 105 for laying the cosmetic layer and then use infusion resin for the reinforcements. Any suggestions you have, I can definitely appreciate it!

So I guess the big mistake was going with the other #2 on the first try. Lesson learned. Looked like you trimmed before the cured green state. Am I right? So I assume the dry layup was to avoid troweling down? Not worried about floating then?

307Driftwood I received over 40k when that project was completed. Don’t be jealous about how much I saved by not using gloves. Please send me a link to your channel so I can become as intelligent as you and make less money.
