Cold water will never kill germs like warm water although this is about color preservation....soiled clothing is still an isue especially if it's work, workout or sports clothing.While cold water in energy-saving washing machines works great for most cleaning, it might not be the best choice for germ-heavy items.
@JoniHilton
3 жыл бұрын
Right you are-- if someone at home is ill, you want hot water to sanitize, although using bleach to kill those germs is even better. Also, washing the linens and clothes of someone who is sick can spread the germs throughout the entire washer, so wash those separately. Thanks for writing in!

Joni Hilton How about hanging them in the shade? Will that fade away the color? I don’t have a washing machine so I only hand wash my clothes and most of the time I hang and dry them in the sun and I can start to see the color fading away.
@MegKampen
3 жыл бұрын
If you take them down after they are dry they won't fade. I didn't dry my clothes on the line for years thinking the same think. It doesn't hurt them as long as you take them down after they are dry. It is no different than spending a couple of hours out in the sun with your regular clothes on.

U.S. measuring cups-- but this is not terribly exact. A generous splash of vinegar and a handful of baking soda are close enough. Use regular white vinegar, any kind of baking soda, and table salt. I'm so glad you found my channel!

So turn the shirts and pants inside out? What about hanging them up to dry do we hang them in the shade away from direct sunlight?
@JoniHilton
7 жыл бұрын
Turning the clothes inside out prevents wear and tear on them while in the washing and drying cycles. That wear and tear can fade the black clothing. If you hang them to dry, no need to keep them inside out. But definitely don't hang them in sunlight, which is a natural bleach. Thanks for watching and writing in, Erwin!

Please let me know if I understand you correctly, vinegar in the fabric conditioner box instead of fabric conditioner. Detergent soap, baking soda and salt altogether in the detergent box of the washing machine and set to a quick wash? Vinegar acts as the fabric conditioner which I always do before and I always wash all my clothes from the inside because of the sweat and bacteria but never heard of adding baking soda and salt. Thanks for the tip.
@JoniHilton

Hey Joni KZread Mom can you make a video about how to keep colored clothes with their color or a video on how to restore clolored clothing ? Because this video on black clothing worked magically!!
@JoniHilton
Жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you liked these tips! Use these same ideas on colored clothes as well. Two essential keys for colored clothes is to use cold water and keep them out of the sun, which fades them. As for restoring color, the only way to do that is to re-dye them. Once they've lost pigment, it's gone. But there are several good dyes (Rit, etc.) that might bring life back into favorite clothes. Good luck and thanks so much for watching!

In what situations would you use fabric softeners? Is it only useful for towels and bed sheets?
@JoniHilton
4 жыл бұрын
Fabric softeners are actually not advised for towels or bedding because they leave a residue behind. This residue prevents towels from getting you as dry, and even can weaken the fibers of sheets and cause holes. Also, it can prevent sheets from wicking perspiration away. Dryer balls are a better choice. So glad you wrote in!

@JoniHilton

Thanks for writing in, Marko! Yes, I still answer and I still post a new video every two weeks. I wish I had better news about your hoodie. I'm afraid there's no way to safely protect the red areas while you dye the rest black. The only option I can think of, if you know a good knitter, is to have the red parts applied again after dying the hoodie. OR... buy a new black hoodie and have the red parts added. So glad you're a loyal viewer!

I liked the video but what about waShing pro club ShirtS. I barely bought them and they Shrunk and faded lil bit. What Should i do??
@JoniHilton
6 жыл бұрын
Yikes-- once the clothes have faded, it's too late to use these prevention methods. Dye has bled out and the only way to make the shirts black again is to dye them. BUT... it will also die any tags or white trim they may have (I don't know the Pro Club Shirts line). And, while you can sometimes get a shirt to expand a LITTLE by soaking it in hair conditioner, if the shrinkage is considerable, it won't restore the garment to full size. Another tip-- if anything contains rayon, let it drip dry and don't put it in the dryer or it will shrink.

Hi, it's me again. I forgot to ask if I can use powdered detergent for my black clothes? I am reading some comments here and some are using liquid detergent. Will powdered detergent fade my black fast?
@JoniHilton
2 жыл бұрын
So glad you asked-- powdered detergent turns into liquid when water is added, so it doesn't matter which kind you use. But what does matter is if it contains bleach-- you want to avoid anything that whitens or lightens the black fabric. Good luck and thanks for watching, Queen Ruth!
@painpeace36196 жыл бұрын
I have question...Can I use any type of detergent to wash black clothes?
@JoniHilton

Any detergent suitable for laundry should be fine. However, use a bit less than the recommended amount. I find clothes get just as clean, and there isn't as much residual soap in them. You could also experiment with gentle detergents, such as Woolite.

have you ever washed black t shirts from the store hot topic? they seem to fade a lot faster than most black clothes and they fade into dark brown instead of dark gray so I am wondering if probably your method would work on hot topic shirts
@JoniHilton
7 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried Hot Topic T-shirts, but this method should work on any fabric. The fact that they fade to dark brown instead of dark gray shouldn't really matter-- that just tells you that the dye they used is composed mostly of brown tones. There's a fun experiment you can do, to see what people use to create black ink or dye. Take several black markers-- all kinds, and draw a line on a paper towel with each one. Then slowly drizzle drops of water on the marks, to make them "bleed" and you'll see what was used to create those black inks-- you'll see brown, purple, green-- really surprising. But back to your question-- this method will work for you! I must say that some fabrics are not as colorfast as others, so results will vary due to that. Thanks for watching.

Will one wash do anything? Trying to shrink some clothes lol, but not fade them oit
@JoniHilton
Жыл бұрын
Great question, Logan! Here's the thing: the more you wash them (and the hotter), the more they will fade. But my tips will diminish that fading considerably. Also, certain fabrics-- especially rayon-- fade tremendously in hot water. Other fabrics simply won't shrink, no matter how much you wash them (think of an old, much-washed T-shirt). Good luck and thanks for finding my channel!

Cold water will never kill germs like warm water although this is about color preservation....soiled clothing is still an isue especially if it's work, workout or sports clothing.While cold water in energy-saving washing machines works great for most cleaning, it might not be the best choice for germ-heavy items.
@JoniHilton

@MegKampen
3 жыл бұрын
If you take them down after they are dry they won't fade. I didn't dry my clothes on the line for years thinking the same think. It doesn't hurt them as long as you take them down after they are dry. It is no different than spending a couple of hours out in the sun with your regular clothes on.

What measuring cups are being used? And is there a certain type of vinegar, baking soda, and salt that should be used?
@JoniHilton
20 күн бұрын
U.S. measuring cups-- but this is not terribly exact. A generous splash of vinegar and a handful of baking soda are close enough. Use regular white vinegar, any kind of baking soda, and table salt. I'm so glad you found my channel!
Would this work for all colors? Also do you and the win, baking soda and salt with the laundry detergent.
@JoniHilton
10 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works for all colors. Not sure about your second sentence-- are you asking if you add baking soda and salt with the detergent? If so, the answer is yes-- good luck and thanks for writing in!
So turn the shirts and pants inside out? What about hanging them up to dry do we hang them in the shade away from direct sunlight?
@JoniHilton
@JoniHilton

Yes, that would work perfectly. You really can't go wrong with these 3 great additions-- you can even dump them all in with the clothing and it will still work. So glad you wrote in!

Hey Joni KZread Mom can you make a video about how to keep colored clothes with their color or a video on how to restore clolored clothing ? Because this video on black clothing worked magically!!
@JoniHilton

Did the vinegar trick work for you, man?
In what situations would you use fabric softeners? Is it only useful for towels and bed sheets?
@JoniHilton

No, use that blend every time. Granted, one time does help the garment become more color-fast, but I've found that taking precautions each time really prolong the black color. Thanks for watching!
Its amazing you still answer after all these years! Anyways i was wondering is there a way to darken a hoodie i really like? Its black but has some red details "knitted" on it.Is there a way to make it but without ruining the red part?
@JoniHilton
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing in, Marko! Yes, I still answer and I still post a new video every two weeks. I wish I had better news about your hoodie. I'm afraid there's no way to safely protect the red areas while you dye the rest black. The only option I can think of, if you know a good knitter, is to have the red parts applied again after dying the hoodie. OR... buy a new black hoodie and have the red parts added. So glad you're a loyal viewer!

I liked the video but what about waShing pro club ShirtS. I barely bought them and they Shrunk and faded lil bit. What Should i do??
@JoniHilton

Joni Hilton wow ok... ThankS for the advice. I appreciate it
Hi, it's me again. I forgot to ask if I can use powdered detergent for my black clothes? I am reading some comments here and some are using liquid detergent. Will powdered detergent fade my black fast?
@JoniHilton
2 жыл бұрын
So glad you asked-- powdered detergent turns into liquid when water is added, so it doesn't matter which kind you use. But what does matter is if it contains bleach-- you want to avoid anything that whitens or lightens the black fabric. Good luck and thanks for watching, Queen Ruth!
I have question...Can I use any type of detergent to wash black clothes?
@JoniHilton
6 жыл бұрын
Any detergent suitable for laundry should be fine. However, use a bit less than the recommended amount. I find clothes get just as clean, and there isn't as much residual soap in them. You could also experiment with gentle detergents, such as Woolite.

Glad you found my channel, Rafael.
have you ever washed black t shirts from the store hot topic? they seem to fade a lot faster than most black clothes and they fade into dark brown instead of dark gray so I am wondering if probably your method would work on hot topic shirts
@JoniHilton

@JoniHilton
