I’m 82nd Vet. What I did was I Volunteered out of my AIT. They will ask who wants to go airborne at the beginning and at the end. My 82nd Airborne brothers have a tradition of taking volunteers. There was 5 of us from different Platoons who volunteered at the end and we all ended up in 82nd. I would say your best chances are to volunteer and you better know how to run. 82nd ALL THE WAY!!!

I must have lived a charmed life. I got the 10th MTN at Ft. Drum coming right out of AIT in 1988 without even asking for it, and then spent the next 6 years with them. I attribute that to the fact that the Division was still building up after being reactivated and they needed the bodies. Fast forward to 2008 and I'm now in the Air Force and I get deployed to AFGN for a year to fill a specialty slot attached to the 101 ABN. All my previous AF deployments were all attributable to the fact that I spoke Army and the AF knew it, and I am sure that is how I ended up working for the 101st.

When I went in, in 2005, they were ramping up the numbers. You could select a specific in demand location and mos, while receiving $400 monthly bonus on top of your regular bonus. I was offered Hawaii, Korea, Germany, Hood, Lewis, Riley, Carson, and Bliss as an infantryman. I picked Germany, served with the 1-26IN 1ID till we reflagged to 2-28IN 172nd Infantry Brigade. I was in basic with a guy who had Riley guaranteed, close to home for him. He fell for the old guard pitch and changed his contract. He was medically evaluated and come to find out he had an old guard disqualifying knee surgery. They tore up the old guard contract, sent him to Korea, no $400 monthly bonus.

When I got assigned to Hood I wanted 1st Cavalry so what I did was contact 1st Cav G-1 and told him that I really wanted 1st Cav. Since I was FA I knew that I was going to Division Artillery, either 1st Cav or 4th ID, so I also called the S-1 at at 1st Cav Divarty. They both contacted G-1 at III Corps and told him that they wanted me, and several weeks later I was notified that I had been assigned to the 1st Cav.

Things have changed in the past 34 years. I choose Infantry, Airborne and the 82nd as my first duty assignment. At Airborne School, certain MOSs were asked if they would like to go to RIP. I don’t know when it changed from RIP to I think RASP. SF would monthly post what they were look for. The minimum was E-4 and that was rare. Normally it was E-4 promotable or higher. If selected, you went to Q-Course and then to your school. Delta would recruit from E-5s and above. All of it was fairly hush, hush, but even if you passed their qualification testing it didn’t mean that they were accepting you. Always enjoyed the few opportunities I got, to watch Delta train. Those dudes are beast!!

I PCS'd from 2 Infantry in Korea to the 101st for the last year of my enlistment. Originally, I had hoped to go to 10th Mtn at Ft. Drum because I was from NY but the Army had other plans. I thought we lived in the field in Korea......I was wrong. At Campbell we would go to the field for almost a month at a time, vs. Korea where we go out for one to two weeks, come back for a while, and go back out during training cycles. Strangely, at Campbell in the 1/187th Infantry, they would come in from the field for weekends. It seemed cool at first, but it was a bigger pain in the ass than just staying out there.

If you spend a full career in military service, your reputation and performance proceeds you. The way to be assigned to specific units of choice is directly TWO THINGS. Networking with contacts and become intimately familiar with the support personnel at Human Resources Command. Your branch manager combined with connections can get you REQUESTED by ANY UNIT. If these concepts or terms are foreign to an individual, research is required.

Benning,, Georgia. First Duty station 2nd Infantry Division, South Korea! My recruiters told me how NOT many people asked for something like that, and, we're just too happy to give it to me! LOL!

If you are bold enough, there mays still be a loophole to get to specific non-elite units. (Note: The guy who did this had a legitimate Silver Star and Purple Heart so I refuse to pass judgment on his motivations or ethics.) He was returning to the Army after a long stint as a civilian. Wanted Ft. Lewis, 9th ID (which tells you this was long ago). Recruiter said it was not available. So, he signed up for a ranger assignment, got to Lewis, and when asked the mandatory "does anyone not want to be here?" question at RIP, he raised his hand. Reassigned to 9th ID. He went rapidly up the ranks from that point. Been a long time, they may have found a way to close that loophole.

101st Airborne is no longer airborne 4:50. It’s a little confusing, but the title is there strictly for historical significance at this point. If you want to be part of them your best shot is to request fort Campbell. Once you’re at Campbell you’ll also most likely do air assault while your in-processing; if you don’t already have wings.

You can also do a 4187/368 transfer move but, that is hard because your current unit would have to support the move and you would have to be in the unit at a minimum of 15mths. Also, have good PT and no disciplinary actions. Also, your contract has to be 3yrs or you would have to extend if your on a two year contract. To be honest if your on a two yr contract and you have did 15mths out of that that’s pretty much re-enlightenment.

Right I think something you missed though is that if your re-enlisting then this can be easier. You still very much have to see what slots are available so it’s still not a guarantee but if they have open availability for your rank and you’re at the end of your contract then there is nothing keeping you in your current unit.

Let me get this straight.. going reserve first better enables a the scenario of planning and getting the choices, where as active duty pretty much whisks you away with less fluidity? What I mean is that if a person wants to go active duty, but with more fluidity, then their best bet would be to go reserve and then volunteer into active duty 'ranger', 'SF', etc. ? Does going reserve keep you more bound to being reserve for a full contract reserve? Compared to an active duty contract which keeps you locked in?

There was 5 of us from different Platoons who volunteered at the end and we all ended up in 82nd. I would say your best chances are to volunteer and you better know how to run. 82nd ALL THE WAY!!!

You can get airborne + jump ready status+ duty station (you want 82nd pick Bragg) all in your contract. 82nd needs all sorts of MOS's so you can all that or tell them call me when you get that done. Also most Infantry and cav units have recon platoons or long or a long range surveillance detachment that is on jump ready status so you could abn and get into lots of different units if you get your duty specified in the contract...you could be potentially be in 101st on jump ready with a maroon beret

Since the day I find out he served in the 509th, I changed from wanting to join the 82nd to the 509th. The 3-509 serves with the 2nd brigade combat team, 11th Airborne Division. The 1st battalion is in Ft. Polk, LA as a training unit. I want to join the 3rd battalion so I can be in the 11th Airborne in JBER in Anchorage, AK near family. How do I get into that battalion of the 509th? Do I just hope for the best or put in a request with a recruiter? What do I need to do?

If someone straight out of high school wanted to be in the 75th RGT, would it be wiser to obtain an Option 40 contract and go straight to RASP with no experience, or go into an Airborne or other infantry MOS first to build experience and then attempt to apply? I understand SF and "regular" army is a very different lifestyle, just curious what you guys think.

On one more note. Pre train and talk to army special forces recruiters prior. And start training hard to their advise to become. Physically fit. All can try out your success rate is how hard you ore trained even before them giving you an assessment date. The assessment is you go there having trained hard. So you can pass. Its not go to selection to train. And you will pass. Ask for mentors and advice on how to train

Some of these units are confusing. For example, the 10th mountain division is infantry that is mountain centric, however, the big red one also could fight in mountains, and the 10th could fight in cities.. so what’s the difference? Same with airborne, the 82nd patrol around in humvees like all other grunts, at least the last two wars. Bottom line they’re all similar if not the same. The only difference is with the ranger and onwards.
