Right on the money once again. regardless of what a recruiter tells you, if it’s not in writing it’s not going to happen. I can’t tell you how many recruits said to me “But my recruiter said....”. I don’t know exactly how it works now days but when I enlisted I had an “aviation 6000 MOS” guarantee. There are many jobs in the 6000 field, so the job I ended up with was what the Marine Corps needed at the time. If you say the recruiter guarantees you a “specific” job or school, GET IT IN WRITING !!! Semper Fi

Outstanding comments Lonnie. Surprisingly I have had young fellows of friends and now here wanting to follow their dreams and not reality. The big green machine always wins. A young Marines idea of being an embassy guard in Rome turns USS never docks MEU in the Pacific somewhere. Everyday.

I enlisted in the Navy in 1965 and was guaranteed a class A school because of my scores.....I told the recruiter that I wanted to go to Cooks and Bakers school, and he said that in the Navy, cooks and bakers was all on the job training, and there was no school for such, and my scores indicated I should go to a technical school. I said I no longer cared, because if they weren't going to give me the school of my choice as promised, then I wasn't going to stay the 30 years I was ready to commit to when the promise was made, but would do the shortest amount of active time possible and then bail out. I was sent to Gunners Mate Technician A school, and then to a fleet school in preparation for deployment over seas. Gunners Mate Technician was a cover rating for Nuclear Weaponsman. Quite a jump from wanting to be a cook and baker to becoming a Nuclear/Thermonuclear Weapons Test and Assembly Technician. Found out later, that right there where the clerk was that told me the cooks and Bakers were OJT, the Navy had one of the largest Cooks and Bakers schools in the world....Get it in writing in a legal contract, or just bend over, grin and take it. In 1968 I was offered a $12,000 cash re-enlistment bonus for 6 years, and 2 Years guaranteed shore duty where ever I wanted to go, and then 4 years at sea probably on an aircraft carrier. I decided I would rather check out the psychedelic era instead.

When I enlisted in 1983, I was not guaranteed a specific school. My recruiter was good at explaining to me that the school I wanted was part of a large group. He said the Marine Corps would do whatever they could to place me in the school of my choice. I enlisted to be a diesel mechanic, and it was listed on my contact as my school of choice. I ended up doing something else in Motor T because they overbooked the diesel mechanic school and simply didn't have any slots available. It didn't matter, I enjoyed my time in the Corps.

The Executive officer AKA "XO" (1st Lt) tells the platoon commanders usually 2nd Lt who in turn orders the platoon Sergeants to get the area cleaned up. The platoon Sgt will then instruct his platoon about the detail and tell his NCOS to see that it gets done. He came up and asked me what I want to be. I told him I want to sign up with USMC and become a computer engineer. He said there’s no guarantee and you’ll might up being a kitchen engineer. He encouraged me to go to 4 year college to get my engineering degree and by then I’ll be mature enough to decide to join the military as an officer. He also said I can’t even showed up in his class on time. I found out from my PE coach that my history teacher was a retired 1st Lieutenant Vietnam vet. I never joined the military after college, but happy with my life and career. As for some classmates , the enlisted and was ticked off that got suckered. So I planned ahead as soon as I found out about that . I put in for one week of leave , came back and put in for a few days and began doing this . You have to request leave a week in advance . They can't put you back at Platoon Sergeant if you're taking vacation every other week . OL TOP knew what I was doing so he had me sign several of request leave chit's and had a decent vacation before coming back to the states !! Then getting back to the states I still had 60 days of leave on the books I still got paid for !!!

stanley maestas I don’t know to much about her. Heard her name thrown about in training etc but don’t remember all the ins and outs. 88m were getting decent sign on bonus at one time. I never got a sign on bonus as I joined in 2009 and had just missed it. My EOD buddies got over 100 grand sign on. Get many who look down on 88m’s but it was one of most dangerous jobs and obviously an essential job.

I wish my recruiter told me about the "moment of truth" during Navy boot camp induction. I had no clue this was coming and the CWO said it wasn't "a matter of IF, but WHEN they found out our background and that we would be court martialed and jailed when they find out we lied about anything. So, me and 20 other people stood up and went in line to confess stuff. After telling them I smoked pot in my youth, I asked the dude if this confession was going to interfere with my ability to obtain a security clearance for my cryptology job. He paused for a moment and with a serious look, said, "yes, probably so." At that point, I had incredible situational awareness. I quickly realized my job prospect vanished and I would be relegated to a job in the Navy I probably didn't want, so I spoke with a Navy psychologist and was administratively separated. I often wonder what my life would have been life if I stayed in. I was looking forward to a military life, and I wish I would have been prepped for that crazy moment.

What your Marine recruiter doesn’t tell you - you can be an expert marksman, earn a silver star in Iraq and take a bullet for a fellow Marine....... but you’ll still be a “shit bag” if your SGT finds a cheerio under your bed during field day or a loose thread under your uniform pocket while standing in formation. No one will EVER mention your service accomplishments but you will NEVER hear the end of that cheerio. That’s LITERALLY all they care about. And I’m not even kidding. DO NOT join the Marines.

He even told me if I fail out, I ‘d end up in what mos they needed to fill as long as I passed training. That staff sergeant was very straight forward with information. If he wasn’t I wouldn’t of enlisted in the marines would of look at other services. Besides I knew all of this going into the office dad served in the marines and my brother was in the marines then. I even knew all regulations on my uniforms. Sound advice if your in boot camp and you go to church on Sunday, never have your uniform pressed and boots shined, and they look better than your drill instructors you ll regret in, trust me

As long as you score high enough on the ASVAB you can have any job in the Coast Guard, typically you will have to wait a year or so to get some jobs, but nonetheless if you're patient you can get the job you want 2. If you fail out of A school you can reapply and try again, you are not subject to picking a rating just because you fail ("rating" is the CG's name for an MOS) 3. Boot Camp WILL suck, more than likely you won't like it 4. In many cases E-2's, E-3's, etc don't live in barracks or on base. 5. My contract is 4 years active, 4 years inactive reserve

The biggest mistake that a lot of people do is think that the military is a better way than to what their current life is. The military is not a job, it is a way of life. It is hard, boring, monotonous, frustrating way of life. You will have more crappy days than good, you will deal with the phenomenon known as “hurry up and wait” or the incredible “15 minutes early to the 15 minutes”!!!! And there will always be someone riding your ass to finish faster when you do not know what you are doing. PT will suck; waking up at 5am to meet at 6pm and go run at the Sergeants pace, only thing is that the Sergeant was a former track and field guy so his brisk jog is a death pace for the normal human beings, and you will be expected to sound off as loud as possible during cadence while gasping for air due to trying to keep up but only that your nauseous because they guy in front of you reeks of alcohol cause he partied last night. You will meet the dumbest people on earth and wonder how the hell they were able to join when they can’t spell their own name properly, your roommate will be 20 years old and already on his second divorce, and you will be stationed in some shit hole town where all the service members go to the same mall and the military discount is actually a marked up price!!! For me, the Marine Corps was forging process that made me become a much more better person than I would have been capable of being if I would not have joined. It challenge me by trying to break me and it did not!!! It made a better leader, a better husband and father and taught me the importance of planning; the 7 P’s (look it up). It is not for everyone and that is they way it should be. Only the strong will survive. Super Fi 1997-2001, 2008-2016

Greg Pettis As far as military as a last option, I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing as it was a last option for me. I tried college when I graduated and did not feel like I was going nowhere. I tried working, and the same result. Even tried to make it in music with my band but that dissolved. I don’t join until after being out of high school for two years. A lot of those failure were from laziness. At that point I hit rock bottom so it felt like it was the only option for me. A year later I was a Military Policeman, and had joined the Special Reaction Team (SWAT) in Camp Foster, Okinawa Japan.

I served in the USN 07-11 on CVN 65 USS Enterprise, my rate was an OS (Operations specialist). My recruiter never mentioned the IA (individual augmentee) program. This program would send sailors to fort jackson and train them to become soldiers to get sent to iraq/afghanistan. The program was brought about because soldiers and marines were going on their 5th, 6th, and 7th tours over there, so it was used to help relieve them. If there weren't enough volunteers for an IA billet, the navy would pluck people from all different rates(Nukes were an exception) at random to fill the billet. My rate at the time was overmanned, so there was a much higher chance of an OS getting picked for this billet. I never did get picked, but that thought of being voluntold was in the back of my mind the entire 4 years I was in. When you sign that contract to uncle sam, be ready for anything, nothing is guaranteed.

Absolutely right re 'your time is THEIR time' and I think that applies anywhere in the world. That said, I got every posting I put at the top of my list and I was just a shitkicker doing clerical work most days. Infantry and Engineers do it a lot harder but RAEME was a good deal most of the time.

Good video. Surprisingly I was told I technically was signing up for 8 years. The MOS point was true though, just cuz you sign up for an MOS doesn't mean you'll be successful in it or that you'll even get it. I remember how nervous I was in MOS school that I was going to fail (the academics) and fall into a different MOS without any say in it. I fortunately didn't go through that but at the same time I didn't make it by that much in fact, I fell into the lower portion of my class overall. I tried my best, just wasn't the greatest academically. I was thankful I made it through though. Regardless, make sure you pay attention in MOS school. The Marine Corps can put you wherever they want you if you don't take it seriously and fail out of your MOS school.

Like when the recruiter tells you that you'll be working an 0800-1600 shift Mon-Fri with weekends off, and you end up an 0300. Get ready for an entire week in the field, maybe coming back by 1800 on Friday, then spending your time getting your gear squared away to head back out Monday again lol.

I was a recruiter in the army for 9 years and everything you covered are things we specifically discussed with our future soldiers, especially the eight year obligation. I don't know who you were affiliated with that gives you this insight into what recruiters do or don't discuss but what I can tell you is I was a station commander for several recruiting stations and had dozens of recruiters that worked for me.
