Installing a wired wall switch is one of the most tricky DIY smart home set up. Here we show you how we remove an existing switch and put in a smart one.
This example was done in a Singapore BTO HDB context, which shares the same standards as UK, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

    Very detailed installation video! That's the good thing with BTOs homes. DB box all labelled and have the MSLD drawing for reference. Mine is a resale flat, probably more than 30years old. Don't know in what accordance of the CoP the previous owner did to the house's electrical wirings. Took me awhile to trace back all wirings (due to lots of additional socket outlets installed, and mostly were looping connections to 2way SSOs at different parts of the house), label all the breaker in the DB, and do up a single line diagram.

    Hi got a qns for you which is not relatable to this video. I’m currently planning my lighting system and have shortlisted yeelight. I would require around 35 downlights hence I’m looking at m2 pro which uses a mesh system instead of wifi (I read somewhere anything more than 10 bulbs would be better served with a mesh than wifi right?). Secondly im wondering if i could order them + yeelight mesh from taobao and will it work in Singapore? Apart from the price difference and above questions, what’s the advantage of buying yeelight products from local resellers? Say safety issues?

    John Makaay Hi! Glad you enjoyed the video! Q1) No, all HDB wall switches do not come with neutral wires - I suggest either engaging a certified electrician to run those neutral wires for you or getting the switches that do not require neutral wires. Q2) Yes, generally these switches can be zoned into “high voltage” and “Low voltage”. HIGH would be UK, EU, China, British (SG, HK, MY etc), while low would be US, JP etc. Make sure you get the right one!

    Hi Cynthia, neutral wire versions generally have less compatibility issues. The non-neutral wire versions would still work a good maybe 80-90% of the time, but there will be some instances where there are compatibility issues. For example, some lights would flicker or not work properly when using a non-neutral wire version.

  • @housetosmart6669

    @housetosmart6669

    3 жыл бұрын

    It’s difficult to tell without photos if I’m honest! Usually the 2 live wires should be going to the same slot (or side by side) - it’s connected this way because our homes are wired in parallel. Remember your science lessons? If wired in series, all the lights would go out if 1 goes out! The 2 L1, depends on whether they are going to the same slot or different slot. If they’re going to the same slot, it’s likely they are controlling 2 lights or devices. Above for your consideration only, since we are not able to see the physical set up.

    Raymond Liu Hi! No, never use normal switches for for water heaters or other high powered appliances, such as ovens and induction stoves. These appliances draw much more current, so require a high current rated switch (typically these come with a red light and are labelled 20A). In order to convert a dumb heater to a smart switch, you will need to put a contactor (pretty much a relay) in place. This can be done by a certified electrician.

    We do notice that they run slightly warm - they are a small electrical appliance after all. But it shouldn’t be very warm to touch. We’ve had a few faulty ones that would run hot and would turn itself off and stop responding. Under normal conditions we don’t feel anything usually warm.

    @@skylownc I see your question now! Yes, we can imagine how confusing a 2-way switch can be. We got our electrician to take out all 2-way switches (i.e. one 1 switch controls light), so we do not have immediate access to 2-way switches for a quick video. That said, if you're keen on experimenting (if you know what you're doing), here's 2 quick ways you can try: 1) Leave 1 switch as it is, change the other to a smart switch. The other switch must not be used at all, and only the smart switch should be used to turn the light on/off. 2) Use 2 smart switches, connect as usual. If you're using the Aqara switch, there's a "Convert to Wireless Switch" function that you can use to disable the switch from physically switching itself on/off.
