    Hello again, I watched this video a few times as it was my turn to install the steering system on my ply on frame boat this past week. Thank you for an excellent and easy to follow, step by step instructive session - it made my experience an easy, yet tedious affair as I work alone. My Mercury was a Bear. . . had to put her up by myself but as they say around these parts - "Got 'er done!" Hope all is well in your part of the world. . . stay safe, stay healthy.

    Hello mate. I’m so glad that the video made your day a little bit easier. Thank you so much for letting me know as I’m not always sure if I said or showed enough for people to be able to get the job done. This means a lot to me. All is going extremely well in this part of the woods as we’re on our way out of lockdown and I was able to get out on the water again this weekend and do what I love most. Keep safe mate and looking forward to hear back from you in the future.

    Having watched all your videos now, I must say it's a real shame that you didn't do a full documentation on the complete boat build. You've done some amazing work and it's a shame that it's all relegated to a 6 minute video. Your episodes on the actual builds of the fuel sender, light bar and steering setup show what might have been a great build project that was documented from beginning to end. In addition to the actual boat build, I would have loved to see videos on the console build and especially the addition of the throttle controls much like you did with the steering.

    laserguy Hey man. Yeah I'm so disappointed that I didn't do a video documentary of everything from the start. I took photos of everything since the start but it does not justify all the work that has gone into building everything. If you search for me on FB Jonathan Jvv I'll friend you and then you can check out my boat build album. Every photo is in there. In regards to the throttle control that will be one of my next videos. It is temporarily mounted on the console but not connected to the control cables and motor electronics yet. I will also be doing another video soon of how I did the anti slip on my boat, so easy and really cheap. I also have another chill box from a friend that needs fibreglassing so I will also do video on how to fibreglass too. Thanks again for watching and following my videos. Greatly appreciate it. 👍

    I own a 1882 Ranger Warrior bass boat with a 1985 75horse Evinrude. Both still in very good condition, garage kept. But constantly upgrading, it seems. Sometimes by choice sometimes not so much by choice. All good though. Kind of treat it like a hobby. Really do enjoy Largemouth Bass fishing from it. Finished the steering cable install and ready to fish again. Thnks!

    I’m a electronic Security technician by trade so I found a round piece of rubber from a camera bracket that had a hole in the centre for the camera cable to go through. I had to drill it out a little bit bigger for the steaming cable to fit but it worked an absolute treat and seals of that hole really well. Otherwise silicon would probably Also do the trick.

    Thanks for this video! Have an old 1970s 16' Caribbean with steering wheel on the front right. It has holes for steering cables on both sides of the outboard near the Transom. SHould I use the old holes pulling cables from both sides or use the system featured in your video where the cables enter from one side only and glass up the old unused hole. Very new to boating as you can probably tell by the noob question but not new to fixing things so any help would really help me in Melbourne. Love your shows and have placed this one on a play list. Thanks, this video and others are invaluable.

  • @FishingAdventuresHB

    Thanks for the comment and kind words. It sounds like your boat might have or had an old rope steering system that would have pushed and pulled the motor from both sides. This would mean that at the back of steering there would be some spiral thread where the rope would have run in and if you were to replace the system you will have to replace steering wheel as well. I’m not a big fan of the rope steering system and personally would replace it with the cable system. You’d just have to make sure the motor has the fitting where the cable shaft slides through the motor as seen at the end of this video.

  • @easemailboxes

    @easemailboxes

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@FishingAdventuresHB Yes it does have that. Using actual rope and I do not like it one bit. I was going to replace the rope with rubberized steel cable but like your system more. YEs will check the motor today as mine is old and may not have that. By the way thanks so much for your response s many channels just want comments to increase the algorithm without any real viewer interaction. • @FishingAdventuresHB

    @FishingAdventuresHB

    6 жыл бұрын

    Martin Legare yes deffinately. As you can see I measure across to the up from the floor to the control then acros to the Gunnel then up from the floor again to the gunnel then to the back and then also leaving enough slack at the motor so the motor can turn. Ended up with 20ft cable for a 16ft boat. Rather have to much slack than to little.

    Greetings, hoping you can clarify on this: when you're ready to begin feeding the cable into the helm (gearbox), how do you determine which way you feed the cable and turn the wheel? Is it fool proof (does it only feed one way)? Do you risk feeding cable the wrong way or turning the wheel the wrong way resulting in the boat turning opposite of the way the wheel is turning? I'm at this point in my install, and I don't want to screw this up. Thanks.

    megasonify good day. There should be only one obvious entry point. Normally there would be some sort of clip or cut out where the end of the cable would slot into. Another way of knowing is when you insert the cable turn the steering clockwise and it should pull in not push out. That way you know your in the correct side. Turn all the way till it stops and then give it a hard pull until you here it click into place. Insert the clip to hold it in place. Now When turning the steering left the cable should push out and right it should pull in at the motor end. Hope this helps. Here is my Facebook page if you want to send me photos or need to discuss more. facebook.com/fishingadventureshawkesbay/

    Sounds like the steering cable is starting to freeze up. Start by checking that there are no major bends or cracks in the cable housing. Then grease the rod that goes through the motor. If that doesn’t work you might have to remove the cable and by using spray oil you can try and re lube the inside of the cable by spraying the oil into the end that attaches to the steering and working it in by pulling the cable as far out as it will go then spraying oil then pushing it in as far as it will go until the oil has worked its way through the cable to the other end.

    How do you know where to put the controls and driver seat? Should the driver be exactly half way?

    Butch McCarty the controls should always be on the right hand or starboard side of the boat. Depending on the weight of your motor you always want to put more weight to the front of the boat. I would not go more than half way back.
