    Great job! This is exactly what I have been looking for for my old aluminum boat with a old Johnson Super Seahorse 33. I am so tired of steering from the back. I'm gonna do this this weekend... Gotta get my buddy to weld. $20 and a beer sounds like a good deal. :-)

    Hey guys! Thanks for the views and the comments. Sorry this wasn't the greatest HOW-TO video, I worked a 12 hour graveyard shift and came home and filmed it before going to bed. I will film another video soon on the remote steering and I'll try to make it a little more informative and detailed. My camera is broken but I already ordered the replacement parts for it so I'll hopefully film it soon. I have a lot of video's for projects I want to do soon.

    Great stuff. If you haven't got yourself an expensive ac tig welder you can always do what I did. I use aluminium brazing. It's strong but not as strong as tig welding. I wouldn't braze what you did there but for everyday welding on the boat and welding up cracks and rivet holes in the boat I use aluminium brazing. Plenty of KZread videos on the subject.

    What about shifting? The cables come with shift cable and attachment? Tomoro I gotta look at my old boat and see if I can rob the steering console, throttle handle and all the cables to make it work on a motor I just got. The old boat I’d be robbing is a merc, the new one is an evinrude, both are from late60s/early 70s, hopefully I can make it all work and save a lot of money. Cory Patterson I don’t have any first hand experience with those but I bet if you built a bracket on the motor to hold the support tube, and mounted the little control arm thing somehow to the back of the yak, I bet you could. You could even set up a push pull stick steer setup and make it extremely simple if you don’t want a steering wheel. People do that in some white water boats and also John boat jet jon conversions a lot.

    Hello, I’m doing a similar project, but have been trying to use equipment I already have. The steering kit is off a merc that goes thru the motor bracket, trying to use for a 66 Evinrude. I don’t think I’m getting enough “throw”, the motor doesn’t turn very much at all, have been trying all different mounting options and offsets. The how long is the actual shaft in this kit, not the linkage from the kit to the motor, but the sliding sharft part of the kit that the linkage attaches too?? The shaft in mine is around 10 inches, I’m not sure if there is a standard measurement or all brands are different? Seems like it needs to be longer, granted I have not driven the boat yet but it seems to me it’s not turning enough.

  • @Noahlochner0

    TheFrogfeeder I sold this boat and I’m building a jet boat so to be honest I’m not really sure. I’d guess around 10 inches though. I’m not sure if the threads from the mercury steering will match up, I’m pretty sure they are all standard but don’t quote me on that. might be worth asking your local boat repair shop.

    I'm really glad this video is inspiring a lot of people. The modification is really easy to do. The cost of the teleflex cable is really the most expensive part. I ordered mine directly from Seastar (if I remember correctly.) Here's a link to the same one I bought from Walmart. Seemed to work great! Seastar also sells steering wheels for pretty cheap so I'd order one from them while you're at it. Install was super easy, they send you a little template you mark and cut for the steering to bolt in. Let me know if you have any questions!. I honestly don’t remember. I think it tilt a few degrees maybe? This motor sat pretty far away from the ground when trailered so I never bothered tilting it even before I did the steering. There is ways to make sure you still can tilt it though, just make the bracket attach to the upper tiltable part of the motor and not the bottom stationary side and you’ll be golden.

    Did you build the steering column and add the remote start? Do you have videos of those mods? I have a 1970 14' MirroCraft that has a 1985 Johnson 25HP motor, and I really want to build a steering console similar to what you did there. My motivation is the 15 back surgeries I've had. Sitting on those benches and having to stay somewhat turned to use the tiller gets pretty painful after a while.

  • @Noahlochner0

    So when I initially started this boat project I didn’t know how to weld aluminum so I designed them console and had my buddy weld it. The steering wheel and its connection hardware are from seastar I believe. It’s super easy to install. It comes with a template for you to mark exactly where the holes need to be and you just drill them out with a hole saw and a small drill bit for the bolt holes. This motor already had a remote start when I bought it, however it didn’t work so I brought it to a marine shop and paid them like 60 bucks to make it work again. I believe there’s another youtube channel which I’ll have to go find the link for, but it shows how to add a remote start. Admittedly, wiring stuff isn’t my strength so I leave important things to the professionals as often as I can. I cut my teeth into the boating world with the boat in this video but I’ve grown a lot in what I can do and what I know how to do. I would highly recommend doing a console and adding steering. For me, it makes the boating experience soooo much better. I’ve Also had back surgery and for my next boat that I’m going to build from scratch, I’m planning on designing some suspension mounts for some really nice seats for that exact reason. If you look up some of those air ride suspension seats, probably something like that.

  • @Noahlochner0

    @Noahlochner0

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@shanepeter1616 Yeah Its a stand up console in that boat. I love standing up and operating the boat. It lets me see alot more of what is under the water in front of me, which is important because I typically run rivers and there is often a ton of rocks and debris that gets moved around each year. Air ride is just a type of suspension seat base. I'm planning on (Maybe) building something similar to the Shockwave S5 seat bases. Heres a link to their website just so you can see what i'm talking about and how they work. Essentially its got a few linkages between two plates. One plate mounts to the boat, the other plate mounts to the bottom of your seat and it is suspended by basically a bike shock that you can adjust the damper and rebound. Good for us dudes with back issues.

    Go to the 0:25 mark in the video and pause it. You can see that the end of the throttle cable housing is held in the little bracket on the side of the motor. My motor came with it but if yours doesnt, you can usually get them online. Then the end of the cable extends and connects to a little piece with a metal clip. I bought the control cables with the threaded ends. This lets me change out the cable ends if I end up getting a different brand motor later on down the road.

    Barry Nelson they’re both run off of a thick cable that pushes and pulls as you move the controls. You can buy generic throttle cables and control cables and the ends have a threaded hollow bar part that you can attach the cable ends that are specific to your motor. For example Johnson motors use a specific connector, and so do mercury. Once you have the cables hooked up to the controls you just adjust the right amount of slack at the motor end, and snap them into place. It’s pretty easy. My specific controls are typically mounted to the side but I modified them to mount into the dash because I liked it better that way. Just made a few mounting brackets and put it in. I did have to grind off some aluminum to make it sit flush though. All the cables are run out the bottom and to the motor. Hope that helps!

    Anything is possible. Most modern motors have connection tube to run a teleflex cable for steering, this one was an old 1968 Johnson and was built before that became the standard. Just needed a little modification to attach the teleflex cable and all the other setup was the same as any standard motor setup. This particular motor had the attachments for the throttle and shift cable’s so I just hooked those up to a set of old controls. Hope this helps! I’m designing and building a jetboat so I don’t have this boat anymore but it worked flawlessly the whole time I had it and I’m still in contact with my friend who bought it, and he hasn’t had any issues either.

  • @Noahlochner0

    @Noahlochner0

    3 жыл бұрын

    The throttle cable and shift cable are noth hooked to a little bracket on the side of the motor. She shift cable goes to a little lever which, obviously shifts the motor from forward, natural, reverse. The throttle cable is connected at the motor side to a little lever that controls the throttle.. My motor came with the little brackets for both shift and throttle. If your motor doesn’t have it, you can order the part online if you look around. On the lever side of things, I just ran the cables under my console on the right side and they mount into the bottom of that control lever. Left is throttle, right is shift. I don’t have this boat anymore or I would give a more detailed walkthrough. My buddy had a similar motor so next time I’m at his house I’ll try to explain and do a little video for you guys!

    wish2fish I’ll have to check it out! I have heard there was some type of adaptor but I couldn’t find one. I actually ended up selling this boat because I have a new boat project in the works. I’m waiting to start videos on it but I’m going to be building a jetboat and I have a 265hp supercharged Yamaha inboard going in. I loved that Lowe, and had a great time with it but where I fish and play on the river, outboards really aren’t ideal. Also, Since this video I’ve purchased a everlast 255 ext Tig welder and I’m doing all my own aluminum welding and also a miller Multimatic 255 with a spool gun for aluminum too. So this project should be pretty awesome once it’s kicked off.

    I guess I assumed people knew how to do that part. They are standard marine controls, assembled the standard way. One goes to a throttle cable, one does to a shift cable which mount to the outboard. And the steering cable is a teleflex cable and helm from sea star solutions. It routes into that bracket I made in the video. Besides the custom bracket I made to adapt the steering, all other controls are standard in the marine industry and are nothing special.

  • @Noahlochner0

    I get the sense that you are taking the title to mean something like a remote control. But in the marine industry, Connecting cables to your motor to be steered from a remote location on the boat is called remote steering. You can find kicker motor remote steering kits online. Sorry if the title is misleading.
