How to Install a Larger Amp Alternator (130 Amp) F150

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Most OBS trucks are equip with alternators that just barely keep up with the standard electrical loads. If you add anymore load (lights, subs, sounds systems, etc) the standard alternator can't keep up. Here's how to upgrade the standard 95 amp alternator to a 130 amp.
The 130 amp alternator was equip to some f250s, f350s, and e series vans. For G3 alternators it’s a simple unbolt and rebolt swap. The pulley on the larger amp alternator is smaller than the 95 amp. You don’t need a smaller belt but you can get when if you think you need too.

@@TheMinuteMasters The mounting bracket holes for the 95A was different for the 130A. BUT, on the alternator mounting bracket there was another set of holes that were slightly to the left of the 95A holes which mounted the 130A nicely. I did however use a slightly longer belt. The 95A belt was 98-5/8" long (Gates-K060980), It was a "TAD" short. So I put on a 99-5/8" belt (Gates-K060990) that was PERFECT.

i did the 130 amp 95 mustang alternator upgrade on my 1988 f250 5.8L about 3 years ago. i also had to add the 175 amp mega fuse to the charging cable i had to make. its made a world of difference, the old gen 2 alternator they originally put on this fully fuel injected truck was a serious joke, it killed 2 batteries in 2 years. i also put the oil cooler and power steering from a van and also relocated the ignition module off the distributor over to the drivers finder like the 92-96 trucks. all i need now is a oil catch can, other than that she is like a 92-96 under the hood but a brick nose every where else. no complaints

Yeah that G2 alternators were terrible. Lol I guess ford just wanted to supply the minimum amount of amperage needed. Nice! Those are all good upgrades. It’s kind of cool how you can see from one generation of truck to the next, the little improvements Ford made.

So you can do a 3G upgrade on older models. It’s a tad less plug and play. The link below is a Motortrend article on how to do it: www.motortrend.com/how-to/install-high-output-ford-3g-alternator-older-fords/

    Will this work for a 88 f250 5.8 ?

Yes, but you have to swap the pulley for one that works for an 88. You also have to convert the wiring set up. This article has more details on that👇 www.motortrend.com/how-to/install-high-output-ford-3g-alternator-older-fords/

@@TheMinuteMasters im glad you didnt take it the wrong way cause i meant no I'll will. Im glad somebody is out there helping others out with this info. Just to expand on your topic. Yes what you installed is a 3g large case. This alternator can also be use on bullnose and bricknose to upgrade fron the 1G and 2G alternator that were only 70amps and also had a fire hazard issue th me to the connector. Not to be long winded but the great part about the 3G large case is its also the same size and the 6G so there are part interchanges tour abke to do. They have 4 differnt case designs but the internaks are the same. And if you have a need for more ampreage. No need to go buy a 300 high output you can purchase 250amp stator for the 3g/6g alts for about 60.00 and they are not hard to rebuild. www.ebay.com/itm/261960558985

@@ottobauner9828 Nope, I wasn’t offended at all. I have viewers from time to time, offer corrections of things I said. I see it as a learning experience and a chance to set the record straight. That’s cool! I did know the 3g were upgrades over the older alternators but the stator swap is very cool! Thanks for the info and thanks for watching!🤙

@@TheGstnyellow150 Yeah as long as it fits, you are good. Actually I don’t and I did a full rebuild a couple of years ago. I might be due for shoes and drums but I’d have to check.
