Ford 2G To 3G Alternator Upgrade 1980-1996 Bronco F150 | 130/200 Amp | Bronco Restoration

Hello,
This video shows how to upgrade your alternator from the old style 2g to the newer (best) 3g alternator. The 3g alternator is considered the best alternator Ford has designed and can support up to 200amp charging. Be sure to upgrade the power wire as well.

    I am located in the California desert where temps can climb to 115. I went through some trial and error to find the correct cooling setup and the fan/radiator combo I ended with have lasted 2 years so far strong. Engine temps rarely climb over 200 on hottest day idling with a/c. Electric fans can be customizable to your temperature needs.

  • @TheFixTech

    Does it smell like something is burning? Check make sure nothing is touching the exhaust manifold. You can have the alternator checked at you local auto parts store, could possibly be a defective unit.

    So is your alternator replacement considered a small frame or large frame 3g? It’s important I guess because a large may not fit with any amount of grinding and modification?? Really appreciate the videos, they are a huge help and time saver.

  • @TheFixTech

    @TheFixTech

    I would consider this to be a medium size as the 200 amp is slightly larger but will still fit. You can also use the factory bracket off 94-96 trucks as they will support larger alternators without modification.

  • @TheFixTech

    @TheFixTech

    9 ай бұрын

    If upgrading to a new 3g alternator the white wire goes to the stater plug (single wire back of alternator) the yellow is to the fusible link, and the green is to the chassis wiring via a pigtail connection.

  • @TheFixTech

    @TheFixTech

    Is the belt brand new? A squeal is usually a sign of the tensioner/idler pulley going bad. If the alternator has a bigger pulley on than the original try swapping the pulley or use a slightly larger belt.

    when I click on your posted link Amazon says it will not fit a 1988 XLT 5.8 which is basically the same Bronco you have. Is that because of the mod to the alternator mounting bracket? if you answered this sorry I missed it, I have installed Flexalight electric fans 20 years ago and they work great. With 70-75 amp alternator but stepped the idle up for SoCal ops when in traffic I just put in Neutral but would rather upgrade it. Flexalight was much easier than your Efan install. Did not have remove radiator, in my case you anchor fans to the frame and you can adjust the temp with a dial on the computer to whatever you want. Thanks nice post.

  • @TheFixTech

    @TheFixTech

    10 ай бұрын

    I believe for your setup it is simply a plug and play, no modification needed for wiring or bracket. Certain OBS models have dual wiring with two parallel fusible links coming from the alternator charge wire. Check your wiring at the starter solenoid if that’s the case you are golden, if not it is still a thicker gauge than the 2g alternators and should be able to support 120amps. You can always upgrade the wire later on as it will not become a problem until you add more demanding electric power such as high amp stereo systems abs or lighting/electric fans, ect…
