This is the best video on you tube that I have seen for installing the bearings in a GM 14 bolt rear end. Keep up the good work.

Don't forget to pack the bearings! Great video but pack them by scraping the bearing on your palm in the grease not how he did no disrespect i loved the video.

Excellent Video. I am curious how you ended up packing the outer wheel bearing with grease after it was installed. I need to do the same thing. Any tips?

Hey Dennis, no real fancy way of doing it. Just used my pointer and middle finger, coming in from the outside of the hub(the face of the hub, where your axles bolts on), and pushing the grease in, going around the circumference of the bearing. You can look from the inner bearing hub side, to make sure the grease has worked its way through the bearing. Thanks for watching and commenting!

No grease necessary in a full float axle, pour some gear oil in the bearings, spin them around, install. Fill axle up as much as possible, drive slow, drain excess fluid

Another trick I learned over the years is using a needle point fitting for a grease gun to pack bearing. Helpful for packing any bearings. But as previously mentioned, no need for grease where gear oil is. Just make sure you fill the hub with oil before fully seating it.

You mentioned very briefly pushing the race back against the snap ring... How are you doing this? My understanding is that The race is supposed to be set during the spanner not twerking procedure, but 52 ft lbs is not enough to drive my outer race back against the snap ring behind it. I actually went all the way up to 100 ft lbs and that race still isn't moving, and there's a distinct gap to the snap ring. I'm not stoked on the idea of pressing the race back through the bearings but I'm not seeing much in the way of alternatives right now. Thoughts/suggestions?

I haven't heard of setting the race with torquing it down. The 50 ft.lbs is for setting the bearing preload when installing the hub onto the spindle during final assembly. With the race and bearing in the hub, I used a bearing race/seal driver in the press, and with very little pressure just set the race up against the snap ring. My brother just rebuilt his doing the same method. Just a couple of light pumps, check and see where your at, until it's up against the ring. Thanks for watching!

Came here to see how to tap the outer bearing back against the race so it butts right against the snap ring and you skipped over that part after mentioning. Is it ok to tap on the bearing to push the race back against the snap ring?

I used my hydraulic press to push it back against the snap ring, it's not recommended to hit on the bearing, as this may cause damage and premature failure. Thanks for watching!

@@blazerr88 Gotcha. Thanks for the reply. I thought that using a press and properly sized driver tool might be OK, but I didn't have a press last night so I carefully used a flat head screw driver against the small lip on the race and was able to drive it back against the snap ring with my 4lb hammer. Snap ring is snug and no damage was done to bearing or race. Thanks again for the thorough video.

I know this video is a few years old, but I had an outer bearing fail on my 2001 Chevy Express 3500 box truck, dually with drum brakes, and can’t get the clip out to put the new outer bearings in. Do you have any suggestions? I have needle nose vice grips and they can’t get on the clip because they are hitting the hub. Next stop is going to be a grinder bit on a Dremel.

Not to mention the drum/hub weighs almost as much as I do.

I used Channellock retaining ring pliers, made an easy job of it. That being said, they have been known to get stuck too, in which case you'll need to attack it any which way you can. But try with a good pair of retaining ring pliers, and make sure the outer bearing race isn't against the retaining ring.

@@blazerr88 the race got so hot when it failed that it seized or welded it self in place. I tried to cut it and it still wouldn’t move so I’m going to get a new hub from Oreillys. Hopefully I can get the old drum separated from the old hub. The new one has the bearings already in it.
