I was getting ready to pack for a fishing trip when I noticed a bunch of oil on the fender well. Thought it might just be the wheel bearing...Boy was I wrong...had to replace everything, seal, races, bearings. I've never done it before and couldn't find jack squat for info until I came across this video. With your help I was able to crank it out and still make my trip....... 32.75'' halibut off the kayak! Probably wouldn't have happened if not for this video. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
awesome video man, thanks for taking the time to help out a stranger in the world, you have made a difference and saved me tons of time and frustration and money, i thank you!
i really appreciate this video. just got done putting new bearings and seals in my 93 k3500. i would have been scratching my head for a while without this, so thanks!
You have no idea how helpful this is for my Mud Truck
on that same note, when we tune carburetors for winter time, we put the springs in the freezer too. Works really well. Thanks for the tip, I have hot thought of that for this application.
Great video, I just bought a 14 bolt for my 87 K5 Blazer. direct bolt in, I scored and it has 4.10:1 but I will have to buy a locker. I have done my share of full float rears but only on commercial size trucks and they are a lot more simple just bigger. great video, I will be starting on my truck project and video as much as I can. Good job.
Thanks for the video man, I got my 79 14 bolt fully disassemblled. Im building it now, it already had all brakes removed an I have put on Disc brakes.I wasn't positive on the bearing install.till watching this.PS I dont look forward to the pinion bearings lol.
thank you for posting this was a huge help
you are welcome, glad I could help.
you're welcome boss, glad I could help.
Great video. Bob.
Holy shit, this is the exact definition of 'back yard mechanic'. Good thing that is a 14 bolt and can handle some hack techniques. Give me your address and I'll send you a brass drift.
trust me this is high class compared to how i used to get things done. instead of a hydraulic press it was a 4' sledge hammer, instead of an impact was a smaller sledge and busted ratchets (I have the scars from those too), and the list goes on. Obviously i was never educated, just broke with a chilton.
-britishav8tor75, great point, on 14 bolts the gear oil is what lubricates the bearings, so you DO NOT grease the bearings. This is why there is a seal for the axle shafts, and why fluid comes out when you take the axle shaft out. Once again, great point. -Leo
Thanks Dude This was a BIG HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Video - Thank you!
I'd like to give a tip if I can. I build tractors for Caterpillar and when I install the race and bearings...We freeze the races. They go in super easy. So throw them in a deep freezer and they'll shrink. Pull them out and install them. Got to be somewhat quick. I've knocked one in a bit crooked a few times and it thawed it on me before I could get it out. haha So it was a pain to get out.
Ya, mud trucks require lots of extra TLC. My first vehicle was an 82 bronco, I changed the tie rods 3 times in one year, the only original mechanical parts of that truck after 2 years were the axles, and windshield wiper motor. :-) .......and yes I would do it all over again :-)
i have heard it is super simple, all you need is brackets. just search ebay for 14 bolt bracket conversion, or 14 brake bracket, etc. i don't do discs in the rear, they just add drag, drum brakes if set properly don't drag and help power, gas mileage, etc.
love your workboots
great video it was helpful. I got one side done started the other got the inner bearing and race out and found the retaining clip to be broke on one end. there is no way to compress it cause I can only grab one end. any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
upgradin that 1009 to 1ton axle nice.
you are welcome boss. Have fun :-)
Yes sir. Any advice on a disc brake conversion?
"i try to do everything how I did it without anything" as in I like my videos to be for everyone, not just someone with expensive tools.
I have aluminum pucks I made so I could press in the race
You should never use your bearings to drive in the race. it will cause damage to both the race and the bearing, decreasing the life of each.

Robert Desch old bearings.
@16:48 "go slow, take your time, this is not a race" i.e. a race to the finish line......This is a great question though, yes you can use a hydraulic press, but anyone with a hydraulic press will know how to do use it. I try to do everything how I did it without anything. There is a problem with a hydraulic press though, it the race is misaligned and too much pressure is applied, the hub gets ruined, which is another reason I somewhat prefer wood and a hammer. Happy Holidays!
O ya, I just got around to swapping the axle yesterday, I feel like the train was too big fir this tunnel........
Anyone know the part number of the style of outer bearing snap ring shown in this video at 13:24 (with the tangs)? I have the style with the notches for snap ring pliers (GM 15702309) - frustrating to no end, especially since mine appears to have been "massaged" prior to my ownership. It is almost impossible to get the nice OTC ratcheting snap ring pliers at work to even grab the notches, much less to get them to stay on long enough to do anything useful like fish the ring out of the groove. Destructive means may be in order for removal - Dremel or whatever - but I'd like to source this style for the replacement...
Just fyi, the outer bearing and race fit through the inner race. You don't have to remove the inner race. There is a reason why the outer bearing comes with a race and the inner does not. I just did this on my 14b today. Good video though.

but you should replace an inner race along with the bearing anyways! so im confused?
It has been an arguement, some people say you should grease them, I do not, never have, the gear lube does, that is why it comes out when you take the axle shaft out. I don't see what it would hurt though it you just used a little bit.
You too man, and I was attempting to be funny with the race comment, cause you were driving in the race at the time, but said it wasnt a race. See what I did there? ;)
@16:48, technically it is a race. :o) But on a serious note, could you not use the press+bearing/race driver to drive the races in?
im scared to evne pry on the bearings against them to get the big wheel seal out of the hub. on mine today i pried with the seal rmeover handle tool and it wouldnt budge all way aroun dit even also with a tire iron under it and a hammer to try to wedge it up out of the hub so i used the seal remover handle tool and smacked it hard sideways with big rubber mallet and it came flying out and across the floor. i just couldnt imagine beating on bearings directly or at all. i just cant let myself. i wouldnt even want a possible chance of injuring them hmm... esepcially on my all original untouched 75 C20 with 96K miles on it. no way,. im replacing the seals and brake cylinders on it right now. new ones on the way,. National 8021 just like the originals and wagner 1-1/8" bore cylinders.
sooo looks like i'll just be adding rear end oil for a long wile
there is such a thing like a brass drift better than a steel crappy mushroom chisel
a tip on axle bearing lube...correct method is to grease them the same way as the fronts..they are no different! factory manuals clearly state this...this "they are lubed with diff lube" is a myth and is bs...your new bearings will have a very short life if you dont grease em...a seal is required cuz some diff lube will make its way down the tubes but the bearings have to be greased...do this and set em up right and you will have no probs.....no bs from a 40+ year mechanic
They're heavy as hell though. haha
"Lug studs"
Did you forget to grease the new bearings?

Clearly you never watch Roadkill. Freiburger has been working on cars all his life and wears sandals while doing so.
