Rear Axle Seal Leak Solved 98 Chevy K2500/GM 14 Bolt/Axle Fluid Change
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Well, a month later and the leak has reappeared. I guess the only fix may be to install a repair sleeve. If anybody has any input or help for this problem feel free to comment. -Update: I installed an SKF speedi-sleeve a few months ago and it looks like that has finally solved the leak problem. Happy wrenching!

There is a torque setting on the axle hub nut. You torque the nut to 50 foot pounds, then back it off and re-torque the nut to 30 foot pounds. Without the correct torque, a leak is definitely vulnerable. You can rent the special hub nut socket from your local NAPA auto parts store, Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone. You can also buy the socket from around $20. Also, you should always replace the brake shoes when they get soaked in gear oil. Brake cleaner will do a good job removing brake fluid from a leaky wheel cylinder, but gear oil will impregnate the brake shoes and your brakes will not perform very well.
I'm working on my brakes, and had the same oil filled hubs. I'm replacing everything because my hubs are scarred up. But I am definitely going to check out the breather tube and replace the oil in the pumpkin. Thanks for the video. You saved me a lot of trouble and $$$$.
already done this once to 98 1 ton dually 4 x4 .will definetly be looking at my vent/w w rust
Thanks for the vid. Super helpful.
Thanks so much for this video. Ya know my mechanic messed up my axle by throwing in some really thick grease in the differential that in my assumption plugged up the venting hose and now grease is all over my back brakes. It also set off the brake warning light. I guess Ill have to find a way to flush out the differential and the axle tube. He also plugged up one side of the axle because he didn't know axle grease was supposed to flow in the tube. Charged me 800 bucks and now I gotta end up doing all that work myself because I don't trust him to work on it again..

I feel like I would do a better job than most mechanics! And so I only trust myself to do the work.. Bonus is saving Money
Precisely, you nailed it.
Thanks for the video. I also experienced the same leak. I purchased the truck Oct 2018 used with 49,000 miles--my first truck. I serviced the rear axle, brakes, etc on my 2003 2500 HD, last year for leak on left side when Now, at 52,000 miles leaking again. I also removed rear differential cover to drain and clean old fluid--no mention of drain plug. While cleaning everything off on the differential housing I found a drain plug on the lower front side of differential housing. I don't recall reading about this in repair manual. Removes with hex key. ..Back you your video. Time to get under the truck again and check for differential vent --clean vent tube and clean/replace rear brakes, replace seals, etc. Thanks again for taking the time to post this video.
I your using organic brake pads I would definitely change them , they are like a sponge to anything moist
Thanks man -- I had the same problem - every couple years. Just noticed a puddle on my driveway again, and the vent was plugged solid. It took a good stiff wire to get through it. Hopeful now.

did you just clear the vent and not open up and drain the diff? I'm wondering if I can get away with just clearing it out and not doing the oil change or brake shoe replacement. not ideal i know.

@@BM-of6qz I managed to pull most of the crud out rather than push it through. Rather than drain it, I just topped it off. Brake shoes were fine - just used some brake cleaner.
You forgot to put a gasket or silicone on the axle flange to seal it to the hub/drum assembly before sliding the axle in.
The manual for my 05' gives a hefty torque spec using a special socket to seat the bearing, and then back off and hand tight to reinstall the key. I did it the way you did the first time and it leaked. I followed the procedure in the haynes manual and it worked like a charm. This is definitely a job I didn't want to do twice. Hooe it worked out well for you.

Where’d you get the special socket? I was about to knock out the seals this week and was looking back at this video as a refresher and noticed that his started leaking again. And he ended up using the SKF speedi sleeves to get it to work. So do you recommend the torque setting is crucial to get it to seal and not leak? Thanks for any advice you can give.

@@reneramirez8904 by the book you cant go wrong. I got the socket at bond auto which is now O'Reilly auto parts. You have to torque to the spec which I cant remember what it is it's been a while. The maintenance manual has it but there are some discussion boards that have it. Once you torque, loosen a 1/4 turn and go back to tighten to the nearest notch. It doesn't feel overly tight at that point. It works.

@@rueban96 Thanks! I appreciate the info. I’ll check with O’Reilly’s about the socket today.

@@reneramirez8904 I'm assuming you have the floating rear end. If not, all of this is moot because it's a whole different process. If you have to unbolt to take the axle out at the wheel, this info will help you.
good video. .. so did it work? my hub seal is leaking also. strange corrosion on the hub. I've polished it... but may not be the problem either as ya think the seal would wipe it. it may be inside the mating surface. I may have to speedi sleeve it if it's a problem. I should dbl check the vent... did u have to sleeve it? thanks
My 04 suburban 2500 d/s rear axle is leaking as well. A new seal did not cure the issue. Im considering the speedi sleeve but still researching. Did you happen to video the sleeve install? How has the sleeve performed since last update?
I have the same problem after installing New Seals. Where did you purchase skf speede sleeve
A Stemco seal is good for uneven shafts housings.
Where did you install the repair sleeve? I just replaced my seal and it's already leaking, but I noticed on the hub where the seal seats, whoever the clown was who replaced the seal prior, really beat up that face. I may need to put a repair sleeve in there. I'm also finding it tough to determine size of the repair sleeve needed since I don't have calipers.
What engine did this truck come with? Mine came with a 350 and I have the semi floater 9.5 a lug.
very very good👊
If there is a deep grove worn into the hub where the seal goes you can use an Escalade seal part #710568 that has a repair sleeve built in.
Thanks
did that fix the problem?
Are you supposed to pack grease into the bearings?
Do you know the part number for the sleeve? I've been fighting the same thing for a while!
overall a good vid but a couple of items...not criticism but stuff you gotta do to keep your axle working good...1, the bearing adjustment..u want a little play in them, the correct method is to tighten the nut down to about 30 ft lb or so, (yeah, gotta have the proper socket but they are only about $10 or so or can prob rent), and then BACK OFF to the next slot..not tighten...all these big bearings, (these and semis, busses, etc), need a little play..2, you gotta grease the bearing! they are NOT lubed with axle lube, which is a common myth...sure, some dif lube will get to em but that is not the primary lube for them...you pack em same as the fronts, they are same thing and perform same function...check out any truck manual if you doubt this...I would like to know how the diff-lube-soaked shoes worked out since all you did was shoot em w brake cleaner...ive seen guys heat the crap out of em with a torch and reinstall but ive never done it, obviously braking action will heat em pretty good...but for about $50 you can replace shoes both sides on this axle

Good to know, the Haynes manual also says to pack the bearings with grease same as front bearings.

also, you have to tilt the axles in each direction to get the diff fluid to the bearings. grease won't hurt but it's not necessary.

What did you use to put the speedie sleeve on?
@crosswayfilms654

I used a plastic spool that I had that happened to be the right size. That metal cap that they send with the sleeve must be for another application because it isn`t even close to being deep enough to go over the axle shaft.
Your suppose to tourque to 5-0 back it off re tourque to 30 and back of for your jetway to fit at least I’ve seen a few videos like this you might have a problem finding the socket with the teeth in canada I got one at canadian tire in the section that sells oem tools
I have a 96 gmc 6.5 diesel & Every time I shift to gear.it sound bad like when something pumps this sound is in the differential..any help we'll be appreciated..

I’ve seen the hose and the tube plugged can cause you grief
Its keeps leaking because you put grease on the seal. You never put grease on a seal hence the word seal
@sroysr

putting diff fluid on the seal itself is ok. you don't put it on the metal surface of the seal or the hub though. those need to be dry.
why would you blow the crap INTO the differential housing....Use the airgun on the inside vent opening blow the crap outward!.....I see a early demise to your differential......

It's a floating axle. They don't use grease. Oil from the rear end bathes them. You can pre-oil them, or tip the vehicle to each side with the jacks, to let the oil trickle to each wheel bearing before driving.
@jlunn900

Or drive it and the differential washed the oil to the end of the axle tubes and fills the hub galley
