How to inline skate correctly for fitness & distance, without making the common beginner mistakes

Спорт

Regardless of your level or how long you've been skating, making sure your normal skating stride is correct will bring you many benefits.
Avoiding the slow-onset injuries that can happen if bad habits form, particularly prolonged skating on an inside edge pronation (on one or both feet) should be a priority for every skater.
There is a lot of confusion regarding what constitutes a "correct stride" and most beginner & intermediate skaters don't even realise they're making serious mistakes that will only become more compounded over time.
V-ing in the pizza shape is correct for complete beginners just getting started or for whenever you need to accelerate for a short distance. Acceleration doesn't continue for long. As you improve, your set down position should evolve from the beginner Pizza V shape to a straight ahead set down when maintaining speed and not accelerating.
So many intermediate skaters are skating with the V position of beginners and this creates and prolongs the tendency to have a pronation. One problem causes the other!
The Skatefresh How to Skate for Fitness online course series addresses these issues and teaches you to skate correctly, eradicate the V-ing set down, gain conscious edge control, gliding balance and increase your speed & efficiency, whatever your current ability level.
The Skatefresh Method of progressive exercises will also build your strength and stamina while you perfect your technique.
Don't let bad habits ruin your skating or your joints.
You can test 2-3 exercises from each course absolutely FREE.

Great video, a lot of beginner skaters give up before progressing beyond the V-ing and don't get to experience the ease of and speed of a proper stride.

Yes the V-ing can become dangerous if it’s exaggerated (ie too open) as this creates more acceleration than you may want/need. It’s also responsible for sudden unexpected falls when “just skating” and this often seriously puts people off. That’s why I’m so determined to help skaters avoid these outcomes.

I think this is an important aspect of inline skating which so many ignore or just are t aware of. V-ing when not a beginner anymore is the way to make your skating look less impressive. It’s not all about speed. Form is how I judge a skaters evolution.

Honestly, those strides are some of the most graceful and beautiful movements I know of in skating and what I'd hope to attain one day. Still a long ways off yet, but with your help and amazing courses I know it's attainable.

Just make practicing a few of the course stride drills a part of your skate routine every time you skate. It will pay off I promise. Keep at it🎉

Great video Asha. I’m guilty of some of these mistakes myself. I really need to perfect my technique. I’m not really sure of what I’m doing wrong though as to what I need to correct. I do know my strides are too short, so it looks like I’m trying to walk more than skate so I definitely need to increase that, but how I’m not so sure. I know after that, the speed will come.

Yes this is a big issue, knowing exactly what to do to fix the common problems. If you are stepping forwards with each stride then you are "walking on skates" and this can become dangerous as you run the risk of putting your weight into the heel of the new foot (like walking) and that's not a good idea with a wheel under your heel. I train people to perfect their skating stride using a series of movements and exercises which develop the components of good skating (centre edge gliding, not stepping forwards, not always having a V-shape when you change feet etc). Let me help you by starting with a couple of FREE drills which you can access at the link below by clicking "Free Trial" on that page. That course still has 25% off until midnight tonight if you wish to purchase, but the 2 free drills will really help you train some of these aspects individually and they should filter into your skating stride. skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-for-fitness-beginner-level-full-course/

Is the lateral alignment of the frame sometimes responsible for pronating? People have different natural alignments in their ankles and arches, and as I've learned with trying different boots, and doing different athletic techniques over my lifetime, the placement of the frame could need to be adjusted, yes?

  • @SkatefreshVideos

The frame can be adjusted BUT not if it’s to cover up or mask poor technique. I recently did a short video about this. If you move your frame to fix a pronation without checking if it’s incorrect technique that’s the cause, then you can end up putting unnecessary strain on your ankle or knee joint. So be careful before you make that decision.

Im a beginner, and I have some issues with my skating technique. Is there anywhere I can submit a video so you can pinpoint exactly what im doing and how to fix? I can’t exactly describe it, the closest I can say is im picking up my feet too sharply. Thank you!

I love skating, i do 99% fitnes skating, no tricks, just the basics. Recently after watching your videos, i started leaning more horizontal like in this video, which works great for working out hamstrings and glutes, but i find that just after 5 minutes i have tight lower back, mostly on one side, and its almost paintfull. So i stand back up more verticals, and skate in that position. I wonder what is the problem, am k using that one side leg more than the other, or may this he the result of my last work where i was sitting a lot, and now just have to continue until i get stronger? Any ideas? Thx

I think there are several common causes of back pain while skating, but you got one of them at the end. I think weak core muscles, abs and back muscles mean that ANY amount of leaning forwards in the torso will demand that the back muscles, abs and core do all the work of supporting the torso and that's heave work, so they tire and complain. Skate more upright and focus on hinging from your hips with knees going forwards, not just head leaning forwards and back. Slowly over time you will build up these muscles by skating more upright and bending more but also in any other ways off skates (lying on the floor on your tummy an then lifting feet/legs and head/arms for 10 seconds is a good place to start repeat twice). Lower backs can hurt mainly due to cranking down the angle of the back towards horizontal too quickly. This should take may months. You can incline up to 45 degrees as long as the knees remain well bent also. You probably push harder on one side which is normal so that explains the pain being more on one side. Hope this is helpful.

Yes, definitely, sounds like a great rhythm. But focus more on correct form than just speed or distance. It’s better to skate fewer kms with better technique than more kms but worse.
