    Only bowled for about 1 1/2 years. Took lessons at ITRC. Gone to nationals. Did not know much about the tape. So I watched your video with intensity. Tonight is league night of 58 teams in Dallas area. I work on my pearl statement setting up the tape as you said. Team members were having a heart attack because we're in 16th place. Shot 189 and 246. My highest game ever. I was so thankful you created this youtube channel. Yes, I'm a 68 old year male trying to catch up on a sport I never tried.

    I've used a custom molded thumb slug for several years and it truly is the perfect fit for me so far. And my hand swells and contracts constantly. So I've never had to use tape. I still carry tape just in case, but I've never used it. My issue with tape is the different textures and feel. Both white textured tape and black slick tape feel strange to me. When I used to use it, it never felt good with me. I'd still use it, but was never confident with my release. Hence the custom molded thumb. To each their own, but I guess I got lucky with my custom slug.

    In my opinion, the biggest point here is that all of us bowlers should have a really tight fit for the thumb hole. If I get even a little room around the thumb, I can not release the ball cleanly. I always say that the rule is: If you can push the thumb in the thumb hole, then you have to be able to get out of it as well. The more room you have in that slug, your thumb will want to grab the ball and instead of getting a faster and cleaner release, you will get hangs and drops on the line. To explain to a beginner bowler how should it fit on the thumb, I take out the thumb insert and let them try to slide it on my thumb. When that person realizes how much pressure it takes to get that slug on my thumb, they realize how far you can go to get a really good fit on the thumb, and still get a super clean release (no swelling and no marks on the thumb). Tapes are a huge part of that fit, and feel, and a big deal in getting a bowler to reach that desired tightness inside the thumbhole.

  • @Skeer0

    @Skeer0

    2 жыл бұрын

    So what you're saying is that I shouldn't be able to slide my thumb in and out of the thumb hole with zero friction? I just had a ball drilled and there is small amount of wiggle room in the thumb area.

  • @igorhabljak3218

    @igorhabljak3218

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Skeer0 There should be no spaces aground your thumb that you can feel while holding the ball. Ideally, you should have a hard time pushing the thumb inside of the thumb hole. The tighter it is, the harder it is to fit it inside, less grip pressure you need to hold on to the ball and make a cleaner release.

    I enjoy your videos. They are to the point with clear instruction. I enjoyed the video on the tiered taping. I absolutely hate putting tape on the front of the ball. It just feels like my thumb is rubbing through sandpaper. After this video, I decided to give it a try. I put one piece a white tape on the front near the top four quick release. It's a fight to release my thumb. What would you recommend? I've actually tried this process using black tape at the back of the thumb.

    I asked the shop to widen my thumbhole which was a big mistake. The space created is causing me to claw the ball instead of my just allowing the thumb to sit in straight with minimal wiggle room. I've added tape but it's only one thickness. I think to maximize the feel, you need multiple thicknesses just how JR mentioned here.

    I thought JR Raymond, There was a thumb aid from late 80s to early 90s called the ThumBillow. Mostly it was a padded bandaid that was placed on the back of the thumb hole in the ball. Well it would give you a secure grip by relax the thumb from kinking. The back of the thumb would keep from getting that dingleberry burn sore. Would you think that can still be alternative aid these days?

I didn't have this issue with my last ball or the one before it but with this new ball something isn't right. I'm hoping some tape can allow my thumb to get out a little better because it's effecting my release/shot. I was thinking I should have the guy that drilled the ball open it up a tad more but hoping tape may help. Otherwise I'm gonna keep getting injured from the ball shredding my thumb up and having to wait weeks before I'm able to bowl again. That's the boat I'm in right now. 2 weeks off because of shredded skin. 😫

    I've been bowling for 20 years. My skin used to peel off inside my thumb, also on the outside. I have tape to put inside the hole but i'll never use it. I put 2 strips of tape on my thumb instead. One smaller strip around the base of my thumb and one longer on the outside (about 5-6 cm) that's right below my nail and over the knuckle. I have done that for a long time, years, and it's working fine. What do you think about that idea?

  • @pasta0328

    @pasta0328

    Жыл бұрын

    I recently started doing this as well. My thumb hole is too large so I naturally grip the ball. I have a callus on the side of my thumb furthest from my index finger. At the start of the night it's fine, but as my hand gets a little sweaty that callus will get tacky and I have a harder and harder time getting out of the ball And so, realizing my thumb hole is too big, I started bowling with two pieces of fit tape on that side of my thumb. That has worked wonders and the ball comes off much more cleanly BUT (and this is the real reason I'm posting this comment), I plan to go one step further. I plan to try this in combination with Joseph Slowinski's tiered taping technique. It's a similar concept to what J.R. showed, but you build up the tier completely outside the ball then place the tape in one go. Slowinski talks about creating a tiered tape specifically for your thumb. The end goal is to prevent yourself from gripping, resulting in a clean, quick release Anyways, I'll try that next and if I think of it I'll reply again with the results. If not, hopefully it'll give others more taping ideas 🙂

Here is my question how does the ball feel in your hand from the start of push away through the backswing is it hanging off your thumb is it hanging off your finger and your thumb ? I still feel as if I apply a little too much grip pressure most times and maybe tightening up my thumb hole may be the answer I’m looking for. 💪🎳
