Okay, I've listened to an episode of news in slow French. I only understood like 30 percent of it xD but I think that's OK :) Merci beaucoup for the inspiration!

Just a suggestion, you need to work on your French pronunciation of "U", and the French "R" is generally pronounced with the throat. Although some French pronounce the "R" with a roll of the tongue, the Italian way. The tip #1, listening and reading at the same time is probably the most effective. It has some caveats though. A lot of the modern shows use contemporary spoken words which are almost undecipherable if you are not using them yourself in day to day life. Technically, they are not "proper" French words. Like "Verlan" which consist in inverting syllables to make the word sound different. Also, the typical "French accent" is no longer. Because of the on boarding of a lot of different cultures, the typical "French" accent has changed. So for those who are learning French, it is a big challenge as we all know the accent is so important in understanding a foreign language. Your ear is tuned to a specific accent, and then when you may be completely lost. My own number 1 tip, if you can do it, is to watch the same show or movie several times. Until you have fully mastered the dialog. Then remove the subtitles. And watch it until you hear is accustomed and you actually understand EVERYTHING! I am an old guy, and I have used this tip to learn several languages! this is the best way to improve listening comprehension.

Great advice but I think I would become so bored and lose concentration doing it this way. I prefer 15 minutes or 30 minutes and I watch with subtitles. Find words I don't know... listen again with subtitles and 3ed time no subtitles to see how much I grasp. I may return to it again in a few weeks

Subscribed 😀 An excellent roundup of ways to improve your French comprehension. I lived in Paris for two years over fifty years ago, spoke French daily, and have maintained it by using many of the resources you suggest. My DD lives in Aveyron, about 2.5 hours NE of Toulouse. Looking for ward to visiting her next summer. I wish you luck with your education. With your grit and determination I’m sure you will succeed in earning your degree

What about if your just learning French as in you don’t know how to speak it, read it, write it and obviously listen to it? Will these tips still work the same way? Or should I learn how to read it first?

too bad all the French shows on streaming sites have FR subtitles that don't exactly match the audio. I understand the reality of how shows are dubbed and subtitled. BUT IT'S SO FRUSTRATING. All shows have fr subtitles. it's just that they don't match the audio. the subtitle team sums up the content so nothing matches. words can't describe what an injustice this is to people trying to learn French. Listening to audio is fine but learning is dramatically slowed. I guess French government or no one in particular cares that people struggle this much to learn their language. instead of providing subsidies for French lessons, please someone invest in proper CC closed captioning for French subtitles for most shows on Netflix or other streaming sites. I learned to speak Spanish in one summer through school exchange program where cable TV shows all have CC closed captioning that match the audio word for word. All I did was watch tv shows with subtitles and I could speak to my classmates with somewhat fluency although with poor grammar. This is why not having CC closed captioning in French that match word for word drives me absolutely insane. Only caveat is the French Original shows are likely to have CC accurate subtitles. Too bad they don't make as many or the same quality of shows as English original ones. New in slow French is awesome by the way.
