How To Hunt The Pre Rut

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Pre Rut is an incredible time of the deer hunting season! While many hunters plan their vacation time around the annual whitetail rut, this portion of the rut comes first and also carries the power to make your entire hunting season a HUGE success - all by itself. The timing of the entire rut begins with the Pre Rut, along with opportunities that often exceeds all other phases of the rut. Are you ready to hunt core, giant bucks at a time when they are often easiest to hunt? Then the Pre Rut is for you, and this video will guide you to whitetail rut success!
To learn how to get the most out of your deer hunting land when the annual Pre Rut rolls around, please visit my latest web class at: www.whitetailhabitatsolutions...

I dedicated this year before the season to educate myself through your videos. I've hunted whitetails in my state of SC since 89 and being a firefighter allows me to hunt 5 days out if 7 the whole season I thought I had enough knowledge. But watching your videos educated me more deeply and refined my skills. My approach this year I focused on intensely. I have taken a one 130"s and finally got the buck I was after and my son as well. Keep doing What you do!! Billy

Hey Jeff - been watching your content for about a year, phenomenal information and channel. I used your land management videos to improve a private parcel in SE Wisconsin over summer, and am seeing MUCH better activity already on the land, and have really started to get a good understanding of the how land improvements/elements define movement. Using this info I was able to harvest a doe this past Friday as I try to manage the property's doe numbers. I still need to take out another 1-2 does this season which will be fun sharing this experience with friends and family, but also can't wait to hunt my first pre-rut and rut on the property in 2020. Thanks for all the amazing information you provide!

Hi Jeff. I have been watching your videos for almost 2 years. This year it paid of with hunting the pre rut, and also with using the scent killer but no attractants. I really enjoy and appreciate all the videos and hiring tips. Thanks again. It won’t let me add a photo to this comment, but this year killed a mature 9 point, that weighed 173lbs. The best thing that’s happened in 2020. Thanks again!

Just started watching your videos before this season and even though I live in Georgia which is totally different environments I used a ton of your tips and used to believe more time was the key but patience and timing of weather put me on my first mature buck of my life only being 21 I’ve been hunting pretty much my whole life and this was the first time I used your tips and it paid off. It was a 5 1/2 to 6 years old 11 pointer not sure of inch’s to classify 170 pounds field dressed and had a 23.5 neck three inches from skull and absolute stud and I can’t thank you enough for your knowledge you taught me and thousands of others your like the grandfather of hunting everyone should listen to. 100% best channel on KZread for hunting whitetail hands down!!!

Jeff, Have been taking your advice and picking only good days to hunt, not necessarily which days I want to hunt. I picked last Saturday and this past Thursday which both had significant drops in temp and wind speed. Both days I had good deer movement well before dark. Thursday I shot my biggest buck to date. As bad as i wanted to get up a tree, I heeded your advice and held off to when the time was right. Thanks for your willingness to share your years of experience with us.

Good stuff from Jeff, if you compare his videos from even last year, he continues to hone his craft. Now, that said, I am glad deer hunting isn’t a cookie cutter approach as he takes at times. I think this is an excellent learning video for most but just focusing on bedding, or transition, or feeding doesn’t work for me in open farm country where I have more Ag terraces than I have trees to stand in but that’s me. That’s ok though, I am glad he’s producing these and taking a simple approach. Even this 37 year veteran picks up some good stuff. Good luck to all.

Started to notice some rubbing activity. Seems a bit early here in south Alabama. Peak rut is late January into early February. Born and raised in Wisconsin. Been here for 16 years. These deer and the strange patterns are really tough. Have some really nice bucks in the area. I own 88 acres and seems to be getting better. Began planting hard and soft mass trees 10 years ago. The past two seasons have shown some really good bucks. I didn't get to hunt much last year due to covid but I am fired up. You have to pace yourself with a 70-day season, but late January requires sit time! Good Luck to All! I have learned a great deal from Jeff. The strategies to crossover even hear in the south.

I have been hunting Northern Minnesota since i was a little kid, last year I shot my first buck with bow and it was a absolute amazing experience, I also seen a lot of deer last year, now this year of 2020 it has been really challenging for me, I have hunted a lot since bow season has started, and I have also hunted the youth hunt this year, now that being said I have not seen a single thing except for a doe and a fawn and a spike buck, which i seen the doe and fawn on October 16, 2020 at about 7:45 pm which is after shooting hours and I seen the spike buck yesterday( October 26, 2020) around 5:55 pm. I get out hunting as much as I can because of the Pre-rut happening right now, the real mature bucks are moving looking for does. We hunt this 30 acre area of land that is mostly just trees and some weird plants, we would make a food plot but the land owner does not want us to do anything with the land, I also hunt some county land about 30 minutes away from where I live, and I haven't seen much besides that spike buck, which i was going to shoot because I haven't really seen much and it just gets boring sitting all the time and I don't see anything but I decided to pass on it, in hopes of seeing a bigger buck, during the pre-rut or rut. Also I went into the private 30 acre land around 3:00 PM and i spotted a decent buck track, now that being said, I have never seen a buck in there at all this year ( i hunted this the night before and didn't see anything, and I walk back there the next day and all of a sudden there is a buck roaming around in there. Everytime i go out i have grunted 2 or 3 times but that doesn't seem to bring any bucks in. I don't have any clue on what to do as to what I should do to hunt deer in my situation, or if i am doing something wrong. If you could reply to my comment and get back to me as soon as you can, that would be absolutely amazing. I love your videos and they help me out so much, I can't wait for more. Keep up the good work. I will hopefully be in touch with you soon. Thank you so much Jeff! Sincerely, Jordan Tisdell

Hi Jeff I love ur Channel and love and learn alot. I love the idea of quality access points but the best ways to access on my hunting area are out the neighboring property where I can't walk so how would u access ur stand if u had no good access points besides walking through the bedding area which is what I basically have to do. Before I started watching this Channel I would hunt every chance I had and more. Our season started Oct 1 and I've only hunted one time trying to be smart and not "create" the a lull. Just looking for strategies to get to stand if I can't get around the bedding area ? Thanks hope u understand what I asking....keep up the great videos and why don't don't have any if ur deer hunts on the Channel we'd all love to see it. Where I've seen a lot of deer bedding on my property there are a lot of small < 2 inch diameter beech trees. Do deer like beech for browse? I was wondering why 70-80% of my little trees are beech if deer eat them. If they are a good source of browse for deer, do they work for hinge cuts when they get a little bigger?

I have been seeing a ton of deer lately on a new property I got permission to hunt that is 80 acres of fields with very limited woods and the Kickapoo running through the middle of it. No matter what I do 60 yard's is the barrier they just won't break. These Doe come out in different spots every evening, makes it hard to pattern em. I'm going to try something different and see if I can get a few of em. The one condition to hunting this place is I can't be picky. With Organic corn going in the farmer just wants deer gone. Haven't told him I've been seeing about 25 to 30 of em every night yet.

Do bucks make any rubs after dark or are all rubs made during the daylight hours? Some places I see them on public land don’t make sense for daylight movement.

Hey brother, How about a video on how people with limited stands and/or location spots (1-3 total) can best manage and rotate those locations throughout the season to maximize their hunts. I happen to fall into this category with limited budget and property. Thanks! Keep up the work.

Agree. Or limited acreage. What if we dont have those magical doe bedding areas. Or feeding spots. Or "rut spots". What if we just have the "woods" and whatever it includes is all we have to work with. Sometimes, some of us can't hunt different stand locations based on the wind because we simply dont have any more options. Its not a complaint, its just a fact that a lot of hunters deal with. How can guys like us go about chasing big mature bucks?

When is typically pre rut in Missouri. And rut. If you have scent control and are not spooking deer walking in. Why is it burning stands up in mid October?

  • @DeerVane

    @DeerVane

    3 жыл бұрын

Regardless of your scent control method, you are human and are going to smell like human. Deer will pick up on that over time and if you sit the same stand or area 7 8 9 10 times they will figure it out and just stop coming there in daylight or you'll only see small bucks and some does or you'll have to get lucky and get a buck to come through during that rut that hasn't been in the area yet and doesn't know you've been sitting there. Pre Rut usually is Like Oct 15- Nov 1 "ISH" and Rut is Nov 2- Nov 20. something like that - very general guidelines there.

I haven't had any trail camera videos of older bucks. Wow, that means I ought to not hunt my land then. Hmmm. That is hard to consider. There again, after 44 years of hunting and only two old bucks to show for it my lack of knowledge is glaring (not on my land even). 50 bucks in a lifetime is astounding!

Right there there are a few nice trees that I can get in but they're right on the edge and I don't want to get busted what is your suggestions I can hit any side so wind isn't a problem and getting in there isn't a problem the problem is getting busted going up in my tree because his bedding so close to food and he has water food and those right there

Ho Cade...the best time is after the conditions clear...not during. I'm in MN and the movement was poor on 6 cell cams last night. When you are playing poker in the deer woods you can still wind with a bad hand at times...still lose with a good hand.
