These sit downs are great. Its like putting together a puzzle. All the things I've been doing for years, then hearing how y'alls experiences confirm the same. Just constantly looking to find that one piece, that will complete, in this case, your hunt!! And to all the new hunters out there, listen and learn!!! All this info is invaluable, and will take years to figure out on your own!

Hunt active scrapes close to doe bedding areas and travel routes between bedding areas late October and early November. Once the doe's go into heat, mating parties will form and groups of bucks, small and large will be moving around with a hot doe. Hunting right in the doe bedding areas may be more productive, because once the breeding starts, scrapes can go dormant, and bucks will be cruising and chasing as more and more doe come into heat. Once the peak passes, scrapes will start opening back up. Scrapes by fields are mostly checked nocturnally, so scrapes further back in the woods tend to be more productive for daytime activity.

Some interesting stuff in here. I like that you get into the nuance of different months. I have struggled with reading rubs over the years and like you Aaron have more recently focused on scrapes. Easier to tell how old they are in my eyes. Still yet to catch a big boy in one though. Hopefully this is the year.

The second half of October I really to start to watch and set up on the doe bedding areas downwind for cruising bucks. Usually a lot of young bucks, but once in a while you'll get a goodern. Especially the later into October you get.

Being in the right place in the right time is the key. You can't always predict what the right place is but you can control the right time. The right time is " as much time as you can spend in the stand" in the right conditions. These guys have it right. Read the sign and get in the woods if you can. The rest is luck. Good luck to everyone in 2022. Be safe and get a big one!

The hard part for me with hunting scrapes is having bucks come work um during daylight. Seems like most mature bucks in my area (Wisconsin) are working scrapes at night because the hunting pressure is so high around these parts.

Awesome stuff. It’s kinda obvious but I’ll state it anyway. If you’re hunting a smaller private parcel, you can’t really hunt this way. But still some great info. When your property gets hot, or a certain section of your property gets hot, better be hunting it!

I live in Oklahoma and that mid October is very unique and I believe a sleeper time to kill a buck you see only two times a year on camera, one you’ve never seen before or one that comes and goes on the property but never stays longer than 36 hours. After watching timing on cameras Over the last 9 years, I believe around the 14th bucks break loose and start covering a tremendous amount of ground over about 3 days. Some know right where the plan to go while others I believe are checking to see where they might be able to stand ground and claim their 75 acres. I personally will be hunting evening sits extra hard on the 14-18 of October. Something special happens around those dates in buck movement.

It’s hard to find that smoking hot sign in big woods in PA it might just be a scrape of two on a bench. Mobile hunting for me is sitting those funnels and moving on what I see, consistently see deer coming off a certain ridge I’m gonna go over there. Easy to say find the smoking hot sign and set up on it

  • @craig5649

To me the terrain and cover in Iowa that I see ya'll hunt is very similar and should be somewhat predictable. Wide river bottoms, ridges with oaks and ag fields are predominant features. There are plenty of edges to scout for sign and watch vast open areas for big bucks. Not everyone is so lucky. I've learned a lot of things from watching your hunts but I can't apply much to my big woods hunting environment. I'm also too old to cover the miles of ground you all do. If you're looking for me I'll be in the funnels or on the edges of known bedding areas waiting and hopefully not dozing off. Can't wait for the tour to get started and seeing some dead trophies. Good luck!

Living around Raleigh NC I can relate to this Craig. It's either thick pines, big woods or lake edges. I have been able to take a fair bit of info from this channel and apply it to those areas, but man would I love some ag fields and wide river bottoms.

Use rubs to find scrapes; Use scrapes to find fresh scrapes; Use fresh scrapes to find travel routes downwind of doe travel. Hunt those downwind sites. Set up where it pinches, intersects and/or has food and water incentive, and antipate any use of the more secure cover in that section. Also, if there ain't feces or hoofprints...... find where there is feces and/or hoofprints.

Aron is right about sign telling a story. Rubs and scrapes can tell there own story or share a story. The trick is to reasonably assess it. Buck or bucks are leaving information for does and other deer. Bucks or a buck are trying to find and atrack the attention of does. A rub may turn into a concentration of rubs in a doe bedding area. Then the scrapes start showing up. The scrape or scrapes act as a poster board, and deer start leaving sign. Does, bucks and other deer may or may not leave sign other than their smell. Thru out the rut the sign may or may not change depending on the deer. Movement, how many, predators and what ever.
