How To / How I :: McCalls 7974 Sew-Along :: Part One :: Sizing, Tracing and Altering The Pattern

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey Peeps! Today I'm starting the M7974 sew-along. I love this dress so much. The first one I made was lovely but I really didn't like the construction method that the pattern instructions ask for....so I made this mustard floral and lined the bodice entirely which I LOVE!! If you want to follow along with me you will need to cut :
2 Yokes
2 Bodice Backs
4 Bodice Fronts
4 Bodice Midriffs
You will NOT need to cut the front bodice facing.
You can cut the skirt panels as described on the patterns pieces.

Glad to learn I’m not the only one who needs to add bodice and sleeve length for a longer torso! Please keep sharing tips about how you address this in your sewing. Love your channel and lovely style. 🦋

I also love the way she explains how to add to your pattern! I have to add to the shoulder area because that's where most patterns are too tight for me, I have a feeling I may have to add to the length of the bodice on this pattern as well because it looks a little bit too high for me but I think I'll make a mock-up of just the bodice first and see what I need to do

I've been looking forward to this sewalong to see how you lined the bodice. Also, this is random, but do you remember where you got your ruler please? My 18" x 2" ruler has seen better days, and I can't find a replacement. Thanks! Lynne x

Really looking forward to this sew along. I would like to raise the neckline a little for my version. Do you have any tips for raising a neckline like this? 😊

Love the look of this dress! I'm thinking of making one myself with a quilting cotton. Did you make yours with a quilting cotton or a different fabric? Please let me know!

The mustard one was a cotton poplin, the minty one was cotton lawn and the maxi was viscose. 😊

Hi Sian Might seem a stupid question, but how do you actually trace the pattern pieces? 😊💕

Hi Lynn! Tracing a pattern is basically like a little kiddo tracing from a colouring book...put a more transparent paper on top and away you go! But to be a little more technical, there are many KZread tutorials on how to do it. I like the one by Crafty Gemini, and it's called How to Transfer Sewing Patterns. I would copy the link, but am unable to do so in the comments. The kind of paper most of us use is pattern tracing paper, and I believe Siân has a link to the type she uses in her affiliate links. I know some of those more thrifty among us use whatever paper's to hand...and the Crafty Gemini demonstrates some of those ways. Her transfers are from cut pieces, whereas many of us (like Siân) who want to preserve the integrity of the original pattern. trace them from the big sheets they are printed on. Then you can just fold the original pattern back up and it is like new. Another tip is if you are tracing on a dark surface (such as a black table), placing a layer of the pattern paper down first, then the pattern, then the paper you are using to trace (sandwich them in other words) will help to make the black lines on the pattern stand out. I hope this helps. Nancy
