How to Heal Hoarding | 10 Steps that Motivated me to Declutter my Home

I learned anxiety comes to longing to live in the past and the future instead of living in the present. When you declutter try to remember to think always in the present moment, not about what a object meant to you yesterday or may mean tomorrow.

I grew up around relatives who had hoarding tendencies because they grew up during a lengthy war. They couldn't just go out and get what they needed, so they held on to everything they had. It took me a while to realize how much that influenced me. I've been working on decluttering for a while, and it's been tough but I'm proud. This is so helpful, thank you!

My husband was a hoarder. The only way I could clean was to put blinders on the large mess and focus on 3 ft areas at a time. If the clutter is 6 ft tall it can still take a while to do a small area. Don't move on until it is done, down to mopping and vacuuming. It could take a week but it will get done. You will still have to throw away current trash/ garbage as well. Sometimes I would get angry when he would set something down in my newly cleaned spot. Hoarders are uncomfortable with clear spaces😢. The whole thing can seem hopeless but keep going..you can do it!

Great video 😊. Recently I was praying and asking God to help me with my hoarding issues and overspending. Then this thought came to me which I believe was from him (because it wasn't something that I would normally think). "Only buy what you are going to need for this month alone."This meant eliminating two packs of deodorant or two packs of shampoo and conditioner. By the time I'm done using one shampoo I'm usually ready for something different anyhow and don't want to smell the same scent next month. Then when I run out I would be allowed to go buy whatever I needed then. That one sentence has really helped me. When I'm in a store and I'm tempted to over by it off and pops back in my head and I think to myself, "Do I need this for this month or am I buying to hoard away?" And knowing that I'm hoarding it away is usually reason enough for me to not purchase whatever it is that I was thinking of buying.

This was one of the best, motivational videos. Somewhat generic in suggestions but better than most on here. I don't need explanations as to why I am cluttered or the differences in hoarding. I just need direct tips. This was one of the few I've seen to actually do that.

Thank you for helping me understand hoarding disorder. Prior to you the only thing I knew about it was from watching the tv show with the extreme cases. My father was a hoarder and now that he’s passed away I’m left with it all to deal with. I find myself getting angry and then major guilt for feeling like that. Your insights help me be more understanding and compassionate so thank you! I bet you’re helping more people than you realize. Keep up the great work!

Maybe post a link in a quiz for people to take where it determines their level of hoarding. You will be grandiose at whatever you do. Now your accomplishing so much, a book, organized and clutter free home, a podcast, and healing your trauma to gain happiness. Can’t wait to see your next video.

We all have our cracks. They make them who we are and are unique. They allow us to show compassion and to make us stronger. You’re doing an amazing job in this journey. Keep smiling and keep reminding yourself that if your heart is filled with love, you can do anything. The only barriers we have are the ones we create ourselves. This is by far my favourite video of yours... possibly of the whole internet! I’ve picked up most of these tips by watching your progress - when I found your channel, I watched right from the start. Now, with this informative and practical video, hopefully more of us that struggle similarly can land on (by the power of KZread algorithms!) and access the love and support that shines through in your videos and channel ✨ and for those of us already journeying with you, it’s such an uplifting and motivating reminder to us 😊 I don’t know what the stages of hoarding are exactly... I know I’m not too high on the scale, but the mindset (for which I’ve been battling and shaming for years) and all the hurt letting things go / being overwhelmed by lots of things in my very small home... all of the noise calms down when I can see what can be done with the mindset and methods you’ve so clearly summarised here! A million thank yous, and huge congratulations for the progress you’ve made so far. I’ll definitely be rewatching this video a few (hundreds of) times to keep me on track with my mind and matter goals 🏆 You’re the best, Ms Heart 🦄 ♥️

Thanks for sharing your journey with us. I have enjoyed watching you work towards your goals. When my children were small, each night before bedtime, we would start at the front door and walk through the house picking up our own stuff and taking the items to our room. I still do this each night when I lock up the house and my house is less cluttered each morning.

We did a variation of this in our family -- every night before dinner, Mom would say, "Okay, dinner will be ready in 5 minutes -- pick up your stuff and put it away." So we would tidy up the toys in our room or our homework or whatever we were working on, and then come down to dinner. It works!

I just found your channel, thanks to the Crafty Organizer. I've only watched a few videos but you have inspired me. First by not using logic to get rid of things. It's ok to hang on to items that mean something to you. Second, it's ok if you backslide. It happens! Third, start with the easy stuff to toss Put it in a pile to see how much you've gotten rid of. I started with my bathroom also. I may go to the kitchen table next. I'm going to dump all the papers in a box the sit down on the couch to sort it out. I've done it before but it needs it again. Thanks so much for having the courage to start this channel.

Hi Miss Heart, I'm not sure how you do it, but there's this thing called "Chapters" which splits up the progress bar into sections. It's super great for videos like this one where you're talking about different things (like different steps, or transitioning from/to an intro/conclusion) so people can easily rewatch sections. You might even be able to add them post-upload. It would be super cool if they were included on your more instructional videos like this one! Also, thank you- not a hoarder but REALLY needed to hear step 6!

Go for the small win. I have just moved from a caravan to a unit after separating amicably from hubby a year and a half ago. Business stuff is stored at my old home. I craft. Or i intend to craft, you know how it is. Furniture from the split is still at the old house. I have brought Car loads of boxes and small furniture and collapsible shelves, but not the cupboards and wardrobes (armoires). Boxes are everywhere, i havent put the shelves together and the place is a mess. I had been focussing on and overwhelmed by the kitchen and living area. But this video made me realise i can get a small win by doing my bedroom. I purposely got my coat hangers in the last load, there is a cupboard in this room. When the thought of putting my bed together was overwhelming, i changed my goal. Hang and put away my clothes. A smaller achieable goal. My accountability: i will post back within 9 hours on my progress. I hate accountability.

Its 7.5 hours later. Ive maybe done an hour of work. Linens and some towel are together in a box. Quite a few clothes are hung up. Random boxes and bags just chucked together for the move are sorted into rags, crafts/material, notions and mending i actually want to get done soon. Theres half a box still to be done, the room actually looks worse, but it IS more organised. Ive done a load of washing. Posting now coz i realise there is a big chance im not going to bother to do anything more. But i wouldn't have done this much without your prompting this morning, so thanks.

And it helps, but it is very hard on me. I Can not declutter and be creative on the same day. The worst part is to decide what to do with the things I declutter. I try to sell some of it, but it is difficult. Everyone is decluttering now and do not want the clutter from other people.

You videos haven't shown up on my feed for some time now. So today, while feeling a bit of the struggle, I came in search of your channel. Perfect grace & timing. I gave up yard sales & thrift stores many years ago, because I knew they were binge points - and because I did not want my kids to also developed "retail therapy" habits & impulse purchase (from both their parents). I also believe the old adage that "the best way to save/earn money is to not go shopping". By not putting yourself in a situation to spend on impulse purchases, you "earn" the money you have saved. And you earn confidence & respect for yourself by practicing self-restraint. Two days ago I realized that I hadn't bought anything from Target since October 31. Not one purchase. And I didn't even realize it. It used to be a weekly/ multiple time per week activity. With kiddos grown & on their own, and my house brimming with things, I no longer need most of the "necessities" that spurred a Target Run. Thanks for sharing your journey. I often hear you saying "Tossy Tossy" in my head - and even say it myself as I work through my own journey. May you have a blessed & grace-filled New Year.

This is the same talk I have. I'm overwhelmed etc.. I have a permanent physical disability that is painful. So, I'm dependent on pain meds. But, I can say this after years now I do take as directed. My problem with too much stuff began after several deaths one after another of loved ones. IAnd only recently I have acknowledged that I'm online shopping excessively. I'm in a small apartment with one storage room on sight which I thought would help me. Except, now, I hardly ever go in there. I even have help but say no to it because I'm embarrassed. Anyway, thanks, Im watching these to motivate myself today.

This video not only provided steps to healing but the revelations that came with it about other areas in my life that intersect with this same disorder are have unlocked more recollection of the why from my childhood that I didn't understand till today. Sharing your hoarders heart has helped me make this mental and emotional breakthrough. I will watch again to trigger more unlocking. Thank you soooo much.

I distract myself by buying or thinking of buying stuff. 3 weeks a gazebo. Luckily I stopped b4 I bought it. Last 2 weeks I've gotten to being dirty not washing dishes or taking out trash or doing laundry while I'm on internet trying to buy something. Your video has brought me into the present. Everything I'm doing is just a distraction. Who cares why I got in a ditch I need to focus on getting out.

Thank you so much for being so open and sharing your journey. You are such an encouragement and inspiration. I have a lifelong friend who is a hoarder. She does not consider herself a hoarder because she is in denial. She has never allowed anyone to help her nor will she go for counseling. Her children and husband have spent the last 18 years living in a home so cluttered they can't even sit down at their kitchen table. It is heartbreaking. If anyone even suggests she needs help or is a hoarder, she cuts them out of her life. Her husband is at the breaking point. It is his home too. He has started clearing things out of the house. He emptied out their entire basement. I just don't know how to help her to realize she needs help and does not have to live like this.

If your negative self talk bothers you, Pete Walker is a really awesome source on "inner critic" work. You can shut down your inner critic so much if you learn to stand up for yourself in your own head. I named mine Deborah and I still sometimes find myself muttering, "shut up, Deborah," and then doing whatever I want because the inner critic is awful and so limitiing.

Maybe instead of the smallest room you could the one with the least clutter or the one with the least sentimental attaché net or just whatever room or section of your house (it could also be a cupboard or something) that just feels easiest to you for whatever reason. I think the size of the room is less important than starting with something that will give you fast victories.

This is a beautiful, calming and informative video -- thank you so much for posting it. I started watching you during the pandemic and you have achieved so much! I have also learned that meditation, creative activities, visualization, nature and in my case, yoga, have helped me detach and get rid of things as I purge in order to move to a new state. I have let go of so many sentimental items and blessed them on their way to help others in their new homes. Good luck to you as you continue on your journey! You have helped so many and I know you will continue to do so.

Thank you for these practical ideas! I almost didn't click because there is so much decluttering content on KZread that doesn't address the psychology behind it and I was worried this would be a trendy influncer telling me to follow Kon Mari or something, but you really get it. Others just use terms like "hoarding" as dramatic effect, but you understand what it is like and are showing real compassion and advice that has proven to work.
