How A "Hoarder's House" Is Deep Cleaned | Deep Cleaned | Insider

Ойын-сауық

Mack Leighty from Midwest Magic Cleaning specializes in cleaning the homes of people with hoarding disorder. In this episode of "Deep Cleaned," he tackles his largest project yet: a six-bedroom house, including a basement that hasn't been entered in three years. Barbara Fodor (Clean With Barbie) and Bonnie Ashdown (A Beautiful Mess) join him as they spend three days decluttering and sanitizing as much of the house as possible.
They cleaned the household with permission from the family and with knowledge of the individual. Though the cleaning makes the house safer and more liveable, experts recommend specialized cognitive behavioral therapy as the most effective treatment for hoarding disorder. If you or someone you know is struggling with hoarding behaviors, visit the International OCD Foundation's website to find help.

Watching Mack of Midwest Magic Cleaning changed my life from one of overwhelming clutter to one of actually enjoying tidying and organising almost as a hobby. His no-nonsense but non-judgemental sympathetic and supportive approach, along with his great methods of breaking down tasks so that they no longer overwhelm, have given me a huge sense of reward and accomplishment of taking control of my surroundings for the first time in my life. His bizarre hilarious oddball sense of humour, coupled with his enormous insight, make this channel absolutely unique and stand above all other cleaning channels currently on KZread. However, his support of Clean With Barbie and A Beautiful Mess is also really awesome and those ladies also do great work. All are recommended, but Midwest Magic Cleaning is by far the king. Anyone who wants to spin-kick their clutter into oblivion should follow Mack. Because that's just how he rolls, son.

I started cleaning my house a few years ago. It's horribly piled up, dating back a couple of decades to when my grandmother (mom's mother) died, then mom's best friend died a month later. After that she had no energy to clean and things just gradually piled up. I didn't even live here for much of that period, but my having to move back home due to poor health didn't help any, since now we had to cram much of my stuff into the house as well. Much of the mess is mom's stuff, and she would _not_ go through it. It's sad to say, but the progress I've made (and it's significant in the rooms I've managed to work on) wouldn't have been possible if she were still alive. I started in the combined kitchen & dining room area when I realized that most of the stuff taking up the dining room part was clothes. Most of them were hers and I threw away the worn out/stained stuff and gave the rest to Goodwill. For dad's clothes I found, I threw out wasn't worth keeping, but let him decide if he wanted to keep the rest. What he didn't want went to Goodwill as well. As did much of my old clothes I found in that pile. I did keep some stuff for sentimental reasons, but very few things fell into that category. Cleaning wasn't fun, it hurt my back horribly, but tackling it as a set of smaller problems definitely helps. You also have to keep forcing yourself to clean until you make that first big breakthrough. Once it's happened, it makes continuing a _lot_ easier. I literally spent a month washing dishes almost every single day to clean everything in the cabinets (dusty) + what I found on the counters or in a pile somewhere. That wasn't remotely fun, but seeing all the dishes clean and neatly stacked in the cabinet still makes me happy a couple of years later. Doing the glasses was especially nice, since they went from noticeably dusty to clear and shiny. My dad's bad about piling stuff up. He won't break down boxes to throw away, he even leaves the plastic rings from six packs of colas piled up. I've started going through and breaking down stuff when I visit to gradually clean his house up a bit. That stuff's easy to do but can make a _huge_ difference. I take off all the recycling for both of us anyway (he handles my garbage), so I'll just fill up a box/bag of recyclable stuff and take it with me to get rid of later.

I think people don't understand that hoarding is actually a sign of other mental health issues or a mental health issue in itself. It's rarely got anything to do with the actual stuff itself and it's deeper than that. It's an addiction like any other and represents something neurologically and emotionally to that person and serves a purpose of comforting and escaping from troubles.

I think a lot of us do, but don't like to face the reality of having a family member whose mentally ill. I've seen this across my wider and close family and it was especially hard in my immediate family. Two siblings and a parent with various disorders and hoarding being the chief issue. I gutted, deep cleaned and renovated two of their houses singlehandedly because of their resistance to having strangers inside and am currently doing the same in my parent's home. Accepting that it is a mental issue and seeking help is the first major step towards getting a better quality of life for those affected. The second and hardest step is maintaining their treatment and that takes the most effort.

Except it is trauma for the hoarder, that's what they were saying. It is an aspect of this disorder that doesn't need to be hidden.

What you aren't seeing is the trauma created. These extreme cleans ARE traumatic, it's even mentioned in here. Shows like Hoarders, which combines the extreme clean with specialized cbt, shows the challenge of changing the hoarding while cleaning the hoard. Yes, there is a lot of drama. That's just part of the process.

I have become a faithful follower of Mac and his family, they really care about the families they work for, Mac has a deep understanding of hoarding disorder and does his best to not cause the ones responsible for the hoard any more distress. There are more episodes to this house on his KZread channel, Barbie and Bonnie also bring so much compassion to those they work for. These are the kinds of people that restore my faith in humanity. God bless the owners of this home, I wish I was a neighbor, because if there is ever a disaster, or unexpected problem, these are the people that will be prepared.

What MMC and all the other extreme cleaning youtube channels do is so amazing. Hoarding is such a terrible disorder, not just because of the mess but the harm it does to the hoarder and their loved ones. I have seen so many people suffer because someone they love struggles with hoarding. Giving these people an opportunity for a fresh start, without charge, can be so life changing and I have such a deep respect for what these people do for others.

They did a very great job and helping this family so much! I grew up in a Hoarders home and it's tough. Without the help of cleaners or mental health professionals it's just not possible to make this a home again. I lived like this for so long and really underestimated how it affected my psyche as a child growing up. I am diagnosed with depression and OCD myself, and adapted some of the hoarding behavior, but luckily not that severe like with my parent. It's not the need for hoarding stuff per se but more a mixture of feeling overwhelmed with cleaning, and my OCD telling me to space out areas that are to "contaminated" to touch (everything that comes from outside for example since I have a problem with public spaces). This year I had a burnout at work and a mental breakdown and went to a clinic. There I learned how much living in my hoarder-parents apartment affected me, and How it made be a person who seeks to fix everything and everyone. Someone who takes rather care of other people then themselves, and that this is how my depression and OCD started in the first place. Because I felt like I could never escape other people's expectations of me. Sine my therapy at the clinic I have now started taking a step back from my parent and see that it's their responsibility to work on themselves. They haven't sought out therapy and I don't expect them to do so. I for myself come along slowly, but have started to throw away old stuff and clean my home so that I can finally feel free again. It's exhausting and I still have lots of therapy and healing from my burnout to do. But it's a start. My advice to people who have hoarders in their lives is this: Be empathetic. Don't blame them. Support them in finding help with a mental health professional and a cleaning crew. BUT if they absolutely refuse to do so or acknowledge to get help, it's okay to step back and prioritize your own wellbeing. It's a sickness and should be treated as such, but the person with the disorder needs to want to change in the first place. It doesn't have to happen overnight. It doesn't have to move to slow. But it needs to start somewhere. That said, I hope that everyone who needs and wants help, gets it ❤.

I hate that show (Hoarders,, not MMC)! They treat the home owners with such disrespect--showing up to a house with dump trucks and a film crew all for ratings. I think no amount of after- care therapy is worth the trauma and distress they put people under. Mack may not be a licenced therapist but he shows more empathy and understanding than those so-called professionals.
