How to harmonize your colors
Ойын-сауық
Today I am sharing how I create color when I start my paintings.
From the beginning, I heavily harmonize them. Even though the painting is still very raw and unfinished, the harmonized color makes the work look cohesive.
Check this out.
This practice of creating beautiful colors keeps me excited in the early, and sometimes ugly stages of my art-making. It also makes the colors that are not harmonized stand out. How do you create colors in the early stages of your art? Let us know in the comments!
I hope you have a great day today.
Nicholas

What a precious way of thinking color harmony. It brought me a complete new sense about mixing colors once for a long time I’ve been learning n o t. to mix colors to avoid having them dirty. You Nick, turned it 180 degrees and I would like to thank you for being an amazing teacher and an open heart person for sharing your “secrets”.😘

Beautiful and a mazing bravo 👏
Thank you Nick, I love mixing colours and sometimes the colour palette ends up looking just as good, if not better than my painting. I find this form of painting very relaxing. Thank you
Thanx from Germany, I learned a lot, so precious!
Thank you for that demonstration it was very interesting to me as I am a beginner
Watching again in 2023, before the new Art2Life mini course starts. Great inspiration to put into practice.
I used your method of colour harmony and loved the outcome. The feeling I experienced was harmonious as you mixed the colours.
Wow. I’m so delighted as I head for my paints with tea, grateful for one of the loveliest lessons I’ve ever received. I know all this, of course, have done for about five decades…but a fresh presentation by just the right teacher at the perfect moment - wow. I feel a shift in these minutes that leaves me liberated from every past painting. I feel forever changed…happier, like I could never again imagine ‘wasting paint’ or ‘messing up’, ‘ruining’ a piece. Here in central Pennsylvania, on a drizzly Sunday morning, I’m absorbing the energy gifts you’ve so generously shared here. Can’t thank you enough in words. I’m off to spend my day immersed in ‘living color’. Ha, are you old enough to remember that, when our ‘black-and-white’ viewing switched to color, and NBC hit on a way of describing it that had us riveted, glued to the rug on the floor, as close as we could get to The Wonderful World of Disney?
Thanks for explaining in a calm and easy manner. . I listen to you from time to time according to my time and circumstances.
Thank you Nicholas, this was one of the best color combinations videos I’ve seen! Helped me tremendously!
Great... Big thanks again
I love that you took all the colour “rules” & smothered them in paint 🎨
Fabulous! So soft and cohesive like a symphony.
I like how playful this is, and how you take pleasure in each color you create! It might seem obvious but I'd like to add one thing. In order for this to work well, the used colors have to have the same color temperature, which means either all cool or all the warm, like in this demo. The blue is ultramarine which is warm, and also the yellow is really deep and warm, as is the light red. The light blue is cool because it leans towards green, but this doesn't really matter because it is very light and almost like a white. Sometimes a cool color mixed with a warm one creates a nice new color, but more often it results in the colors becoming muddy and rather dull.
Wow Nick that was brilliant mini lesson! Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you Nick, super helpful especially when you added the unrelated red! Love it

Thank you so much for sharing this technique. I’ve been afraid to mix different colors expecting a yucky result, and yet I love the harmony of vibrant colors. I’m going to experiment with this way of creating color. Now I’m excited.

Very good.thanks
Yes i sometimnes watch ur stuff...and well this video is really nice and informativ
I love mixing colours but after I’ve mixed & used, how do I ensure that when I mix the next lot that it will be the same? I’ll forget which colours I used & how much of each I used. This question plagues me ☺️
Thank You,
Thanks! Very interesting and affective way to harmonize a painting. In paintings like this how do you bring in a focal point and not muddy up or over do a painting?
That red just raised my eye brow......
Aha!
Hi Nick. Please tell me what you are using fir your palette - wet sponge and paper?
Thank you Nick. A question, on what do you put your paint? It seems sort of wet?
Love the info but how does vocal point work?
How do you deal with mixing like this if you have a larger painting? Even the 12 x 12’s?
what kind of acrylics do you use? Soft body? Fluid?
Can this technique be used with watercolor?
Does anyone know what acrylic brand Nick uses for his large commissions and paintings?
At what point does it become mud?
Do I understand it right... You don't need ALL the colors in every single colormix? Just some of them? They will harmonise anyway, even though they just share some colors? And one more... The pure color I put on the painting to stand out, could it be a totally different one? Or should it be one of the colors already used?
How does it not turn to mud?
That's not pure red nor that second color looks blue 😳😳
