I was a high school science teacher for 10 years and used to love blowing the minds of the year 7 kids( 12 year olds) showing them these sorts of fun experiments . There are lots of cool things that can be done at home ( once you get your hands on the chemicals ) . Fun video xxx

hi kind of random but i’ve got a question, do you have any tips for growing crystals? i have a few crystal growing kits, i wanted to make sure i don’t make the kit and end up with pieces im disappointed in when i go to use them so i don’t feel like it was a waste lol if you have any tips and it’s a matter of what kind of kit, i can check what they use. mostly i was wondering what the best way to sorta “maximize the return” of crystals would be 😹 and if there are any particularly sensitive components to look out for. i’ve made rock candy before but it was as a child and it’s obviously a bit different than actual chemicals for crystals lol i haven’t been able to find a very good video with real tips, just videos of the process and results /:

@@MrsAnnThropy This clip was fairly informative about the chemicals and how to grow them. Crystal kits are great .....some of the chems in this clip are easily gettable .....I'd give the kits a try ...they'll be good fun. Do the kits enable you to grow colourful crystals ? We've had many kits over the years and have grown some beautiful colourful crystals. I've watched a few good clips about growing them....keep looking and do some research online as to where/how to get the chems to try this stuff out. Have fun. xxx

Not very strong. The ingredients used for growing them are all different types of salts so they are quite brittle if not cared for. Plus they will dissolve if moisture gets on them unless you use some sort of preservative but that ruins the overall effect.

most if not all of these are highly water soluble salts and such. so i imagine they arent much harder than table salt. if you wanted to grow something like a ruby youd need insanely high temperatures and the base silicate powders to produce them. these crystals are neat but arent necessarily the same thing as mineral specimens mined from the ground.

I think he put a piece of cotton from up, with some copper sulfate on it, so the saturated solution grow crystals starting from up. Never heard sodium acetate "hot ice" experiment? Well just see it on KZread, the base is the same.

    What is crystal seed?

I would like to ask a question please. How can I create or find crystal seeds for the "alum" because you show how to grow a crystal with a pipe cleaner and not a crystal seed.

  • @CasuallyFeral

tl;dr You don't need one! Go right ahead with the pipe cleaner. Long explanation: So, how this works... When left to sit in water, these substances all will collect into "a crystal." What we're commonly used to thinking of as shiny, glittery crystals are just ways that particles stick to one another, in chains that reflect light and have these chaotic shapes. You can think of them like making a paper-clip chain -- they like to form bonds kind of like that! This is why a crystal "seed" is helpful, because it's a tiny piece of crystal from a previous batch. It will draw other pieces to it in order to make an even bigger crystal. A crystal ""seed"" is just a piece of the same crystal. There are other tiny crystal pieces floating in the water that are looking for their friends, so having a big group of crystal pieces will attract others so they can become friends, and form a bigger crystal. Some substances you don't have to do that with to get a great result. You can think of the vessel as being so full of "crystal seeds," it just needs something with a lot of surface area to grip on to. The big, fuzzy pipe cleaner works good for this.

The chemicals are types of salts, so yes most if not all of them are water soluble and are as brittle as table salt.
