    Just bought my first UTV and trying to learn as much as I can about all of it. This is the most thorough and concise video I have seen on recovery methods. The only video I have seen that discussed where to connect the hook to the frame when using a block / ring. Really appreciate the effort and knowledge! Feel like I can pull this off now. Great work, thanks!

    Good tips. You're hooking your winch rope hook upside down though. You always want the opening or the gate facing up. If the hook fails it will then drive the hook into the ground as opposed to shooting it up in the air.

    Yep - some kind of ground anchor, we have a Razorback off-road recovery shovel - with a helper you could use it for some of those times where you don’t have a tree nearby.

    I can't think of the name but that hook stop ya got on there. Is handy or and old towel to have in the middle of the winch line in case it doe snap. Jist alittle weight and it'll drop instead of launching

    Great video! Is there any practical difference between snatch rings & blocks? Only difference I can tell is that the blocks have the ring that turns with the rope (so there's no rubbing of anything at all, it's a true pulley), vs the snatch ring rubbing the soft shackle as it rotates, so maybe the ring decreases the life of the shackle, and due to the friction probably absorbs some of the energy (and decreases pulling power), but perhaps very minimally?

  • @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    Good question. The big thing is getting mass (potential energy) out of the system so if something breaks, they don’t become dangerous missiles. When it comes to friction (wear / loss of power) the rings are super smooth, I think it’s negligible compared to the blocks. I believe the ropes / rings are a safer option. I suppose you could use a metal snatch block with a synthetic rope but I don’t see a good reason to choose that over soft shackles / snatch rings.

    @@TheNorthwoodsFamily Soon after I sent you the question I found this video, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts or maybe the greatness of rings is largely a myth? But yes, I would definitely use synthetic rope regardless of which option I go with. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGx5yqqdppe3ico.html

    What if you don't have a tree? We're in the desert. How would you hook on a rock without the cable coming back at you?

  • @TheNorthwoodsFamily

    Well you’d need a big enough boulder and I’d run the tow strap around if I could - otherwise probably rig up my spare rope, I’d rather wear that out than my winch rope. Otherwise you’d need to rig up some kind of deadman’s anchor in the ground or sand, or there are some products that you can carry to provide a makeshift ground anchor like the recovery shovel Razorback Offroad sells. Perhaps a topic for a future video!

    🤨don’t follow what you mean. The winch itself may be $600 but that comes with the machine. I’m guessing we have maybe $200 into the ropes, straps and snatch rings.
